if he's just sitting in the lounge watching you tube on his phone with his earphones on?

Phone use is relaxed at home, we can often both be 1/2 watching telly and 1/2 on our phones in the evening, but at least there can easily be conversation.

With his earphones on he's isolating himself.

All I was planning on doing was the tesco shop, but it's really got my goat as it seems to have crossed a line. And the loud laughing is really annoying me.

I have no issue with laughing. If I'm feeling sociable/annoying I might plunk myself down next to them and peer over at whatever is amusing them. Or bug them to be engaged with whatever I'm doing.

Where I get annoyed is when ds goes OTT with the screaming. His computer is in our living room and when he gets really into some games he is ridiculously loud.

YANBU.
To all who called the op hypocritical and the like, since she was on her laptop, too: there is a world of a difference between doing something on your laptop while still being open to conversation and ready to pause at any time; and plugging in earphones and being away in your little isolated world in a shared family space. The difference is that the latter is rude. And rudeness has no place in a family.

I don't get this at all. My son does this, laughing, whistling, talking, I don't mind, on the other hand if he starts saying I'm being irritating he's out.

Trifleorbust · 19/02/2017 06:01

Sometimes people need to be unsociable, like when they are reading a book and they just don't want to speak to people. As an occasional thing I don't see it as a problem.

YANBU. Although I have to put up with the DC playing on their tablets and occasionally yelling in frustration. Hmm At least mine are younger and I can limit screen time. Smile

Y A B SO U

He is nearly officially an adult Shock you can't 'send' him to his room.

Unclench. He was having a bit of downtime listening to music or whatever, you should have left him be.

Ask him to quieten down if he is laughing obnoxiously but other than that, no!

You felt forced out of the living room? Well that's what you did to him.

Sparklingbrook · 19/02/2017 06:32

Envy at 17 year old being in the same room as you. If anyone is laughing at YouTube clips I want to see them. Grin

Said DS is now installed in kitchen writing Bach chorales.

DH does that with things he's downloaded. I glare at him very hard.
