We've been given 4 big tubs of talc by people for when baby comes but have been told in antenatal classes not to use it for baby as it can be dangerous (if inhaled). We won't use it ourselves so just chuck it all?

Dp swears by it, stops his meat and 2 veg sticking to his legs in the Summer! And his ovaries are fine.

LoveAB · 18/02/2017 12:31

DrivingMeBonkers you're waaay too trusting of the government! Ermm cigarettes?!

cushioncovers · 18/02/2017 12:31

I get chubrub so use it for under my boobs and thighs.

likeacrow · 18/02/2017 12:31

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour I'm an FS teacher and haven't come across using talc for sensory play. Interesting tip!

The ovarian cancer link is quite new - I imagine it will be banned / covered in warnings at some point in the future.

MikeUniformMike · 18/02/2017 12:32

I use it as ant powder. give it to charity.

19lottie82 · 18/02/2017 12:32

Lol @ the talc and leather trousers Grin I also have the scene from friends in my head!

DameSquashalot · 18/02/2017 12:33

I read about the cancer link when DD was a baby 7 years ago.

DrivingMeBonkers · 18/02/2017 12:34

squidgling - it would come with warning, like cigarettes packets and some festering lungs.

It's a bit of an urban myth; prior to 1973 talc contained asbestos, it doesn't now.

nobodysnogslikejoebloggs · 18/02/2017 12:41

Please chuck, johnsons were sued last year over ovarian cancer links. Can't believe it's still on the shelves.

thenightsky · 18/02/2017 12:42

Useful for sprinkling inside shoes in the summer when your feet are hot and getting blistery and red. Also under big boobs to stop bra chaf.

SurelyYoureJokingMrFeynman · 18/02/2017 12:44

Very handy for de-sticking sticky patches left by labels.

BusterGonad · 18/02/2017 13:00

Driving is right, it was when asbestos was in the talc, but never the less I'd never use it down below! Don't bin it as I think that is a complete waste of something some one might use. Pop it into a charity shop or food bank. The older generation live talc and I always use it in holiday especially in a really hot country. Dito to using under armpits, boobs and on the beach.

ppeatfruit · 18/02/2017 13:09

Surely it's like anything , if it's used responsibly , not thrown about the place. Then it's ok. I Mean just breathing in by a large road can give you cancer. Best kept out of the reach of children.

My dm is nearly 90 and has used it between her toes after showering every day. As I do , we're both fine. I also use it to get some rubber gloves on. Yes and as a dry shampoo, only a little which I put on my hands carefully first.

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 18/02/2017 13:15

I understand the ovarian cancer link is fairly recent but I also understand the woman who died and who's family subsequently sued Johnsons had been applying talc to her genitals and the crotch area of her knickers for decades.

Isn't a cornstarch based powder much better for the beach etc?

ppeatfruit · 18/02/2017 14:09

You'd end up wearing a custard type mix ! With the cornstarch and the sea Grin

Luttrell · 18/02/2017 14:13

I really don't get why anyone's still using thus despite the high ovarian cancer risk and other inhalation risks of silica. It's a product of a bygone era. You know what we have now to get dry? Towels.

One day people will read about talc the way we read about radioactive beauty products.

LightastheBreeze · 18/02/2017 14:20

I remember my DM covering me in the stuff after the weekly bath when I was little, it also went to the swimming pool to be plastered in it. It belongs in the past with asbestos and smoking everywhere, mind you I'm still here. I would bin it.

Stripyhoglets · 18/02/2017 16:03

I keep an open pot in the shoe cupboard to absorb smells and then take it the beach as it's great for de-sanding children easily.

ppeatfruit · 18/02/2017 16:07

The list of things that can cause cancer is endless. IMO talc isn't at the top of it. Why is there this overreaction ? We don't get our knickers in a twist about the pollution that hangs over our cities which has been proved to cause cancer more than talc. Also driving directly kills a lot more people. Most of us don't stop that.

likeacrow · 18/02/2017 22:05

ppeatfruit I guess because most of us can't avoid roads, even if we don't drive, but can easily avoid talc!

I used to use it on my Sindy doll's legs to get her knee length boots on.
