To wonder if boys should be vasectomised at birth?

Dutch1e · 17/02/2017 20:30

If a vasectomy was painless, 100% reversible and could only be reversed when the boy had reached adulthood and had some counselling sessions to help him understand the implications of his decision, would it be a good idea to make vasectomies normal for baby boys?

Just musing on the threads about child services, child abuse and thinking about accidental pregnancies

'it would almost certainly help certain animal populations to thrive. We could stop encroaching on their habitat for a start.'

No it wouldn't, look at history, given the few power over the many leads to disaster.

MooPointCowsOpinion · 17/02/2017 21:35

JustAnother so not like a hamster's tail? Would you want it to be furry or smooth like skin? Ability to swing by the tail?

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 17/02/2017 21:36

Monkey tail.
I've given this some thought in the past and i think it'll be the best option.

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 17/02/2017 21:38

When people are born with tail skin at the base of the spin, it's skin like.

MommaGee · 17/02/2017 21:38

Monkey tail, I'm in.

I text hubby with sadness at the point in pregnancy when my baby lost his tail

ClashCityRocker · 17/02/2017 21:39

I do wonder if we will see more state interference in procreation. At what stage does there start to be 'too many people' in terms of needing to do something about it?

ClashCityRocker · 17/02/2017 21:40

Hang on, some people are born with tails?

Dutch1e · 17/02/2017 21:43

if a unicorn could kiss your baby on the nose and make them infertile would you?

That's pretty much exactly what I'm asking.

Would you, until your child was grown and had decided he was ready to be fertile?

If everyone did exactly that, what changes would we see in the world?

Just a conversation, nothing more

OP posts:
dontcallmethatyoucunt · 17/02/2017 21:44

I think men should keep their fertility, but women's bodies would only bestow the gift of genetic continuance by turning on their fertility when they receive respect, kindness and equality. Sort of like coming into season when conditions are right Grin

... This is a what if thread, right?

MommaGee · 17/02/2017 21:44

Dutch how many operations has you son been through? How many tines have you had to watch them lie in a tiny little hospital gown with them groaning in pain?

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 17/02/2017 21:45

Hang on, some people are born with tails?

Yes but it's not a real tail as the spine doesn't extend through it. it's just skin.

Dutch1e · 17/02/2017 21:46

MommaGee just the one operation for my little boy. Am I allowed to theorise now?

OP posts:
MommaGee · 17/02/2017 21:46

clash
"9 weeks Eyes have developed, though your baby's eyelids are fused shut for now. She's lost her "tail" and is starting to look more human."

ClashCityRocker · 17/02/2017 21:49

Crikey.

You learn something new every day. I certainly didn't realise they started out with tails in the womb.

MommaGee · 17/02/2017 21:52

So having been there to watch him go through that you still think its a good idea to put babies through an operation? Because you didn't have a kissing unicorn in your "thought experiment" you had a vasectomy. Your proposal is to invade a tiny babies body medically for no purpose than to reduce the need for artificial contraception by women and with no consent by them, as an arbitrary decision made by their parents to reduce the chance of them "bringing home a mistake"

And again how would it have any effect on abuse rates?

So no, I wouldnt choose to make a decision over my child's fertility for no reason other than trying to infantilise the adult he will be.

And surely baby girls need to be treated too? The guy might have had counselling to prove hes worthy of kids but what's stopping unwanted babies from e tra marital affairs, second relationships?

Perhaps we should render every child infertile and go all Aldous Huxley

MommaGee · 17/02/2017 21:52

clash it was a saad day in our house I tell you!

BertieBotts · 17/02/2017 21:54

I'm not talking about it being universal/compulsory, so any age. Any age anybody wanted it and there was a reasonable need for it. Like the pill works now. You wouldn't give it to a six year old. But a thirteen year old, possibly. In reality most girls first try the pill in their late teens or early twenties, but it's her choice. And most people who get on with it medically tend to stay on it. There are not that many who opt out because of other concerns, some, but I think most people's reason for not using the pill is because they don't get on with it.

BertieBotts · 17/02/2017 21:57

I remember being obsessed with the tail during sex education lessons in y6! I kept asking my teachers why babies had tails but she didn't understand what I meant Confused

northernmonkey1010 · 17/02/2017 22:05

Wtf are you crazy

VladmirsPoutine · 17/02/2017 22:06

Why are people so unwilling to have a theoretical discussion?
I disagree with the OP's premise but I'm still interested in a discussion that would stem from it.

Bunnyfuller · 17/02/2017 22:18

Ban booze and just make everyone ugly until they reach age 30.

I'll get me coat

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 17/02/2017 22:18

Why are people so unwilling to have a theoretical discussion?

Because the op isn't really discussing anything....

"what about those with learning disabilities" has been raised a few times now..... and nothing has come from it.....

.... you think the OP would at least be willling to throw a few things into to pot when it's her idea.

backtowork2015 · 17/02/2017 22:24

Surely there are far greater negative forces to counteract than the possibility of reproducing? Shall we start with drug abuse first?

Casschops · 17/02/2017 22:30

You are talking f about counseling to help them understand their "decision" how could a vasectomy a such age be a decision?

BoneyBackJefferson · 17/02/2017 22:37

hackmum

What am I missing? That its theoretical? Nope got that.

One point that I made the OP agreed with.

The other is the same that I make about operations on non consenting babies (or adults)

Do you (and I don't care if its the state or the parent) have the right to perform a non essential operation on a child?

The answer has to be no otherwise where does it stop.
