To wonder if boys should be vasectomised at birth?

Dutch1e · 17/02/2017 20:30

If a vasectomy was painless, 100% reversible and could only be reversed when the boy had reached adulthood and had some counselling sessions to help him understand the implications of his decision, would it be a good idea to make vasectomies normal for baby boys?

Just musing on the threads about child services, child abuse and thinking about accidental pregnancies

YANBU to want to minimise abuse and unwanted pregnancies.

YAonanotherfucking planet with that suggestion. What the actual fuck?!

KayTee87 · 17/02/2017 20:39

What the actual fuck??

Sirzy · 17/02/2017 20:39

Also (and I am not sure why I am entertaining the Op but never mind) but by taking away the risk of unwanted pregnancies you could well lead to an increase in people having casual sex without worrying about protection therefore increasing the risk of STIs

FrogletinaBallerina · 17/02/2017 20:39

Sometimes when you think things, it's probably not best to voice them.

Especially when your idea is fucking ridiculous.

MommaGee · 17/02/2017 20:40

Yeah sure OP, . as someone whoa watched hwe child go through countless operations, whose child may well be infertile I'd say yeah, let's put babies through operations just to save on the Pill. Presumably we're then going to be prescriptive about who can have the reversal - education, genetics, class?

Hmm Confused
iMatter · 17/02/2017 20:40

Babies are usually 50% mother 50% father, FYI.

I can't bear this demonising of boys/men.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 17/02/2017 20:40

Ssshh now.

MommaGee · 17/02/2017 20:41

And how the fk would it affect abuse rates?? If anything it takes away some of the fear of being caught if pregnancy isnt a risl

zwellers · 17/02/2017 20:41

Are you basically proposing all mrn are potential child abusers andwho do you propose decides when a man is suitable to be made fertile. Biscuit

sibys1 · 17/02/2017 20:41

This feels a bit Daily Mail to me.

QueenofLouisiana · 17/02/2017 20:41

So, I think we can conclude that YABU. Hope that helps.

MsJamieFraser · 17/02/2017 20:43

If this is for boys, then girls should endure the same!!

What illegal drugs have you been taking tonight!

BertrandRussell · 17/02/2017 20:44

OK. Thought experiment.

If it was 100% safe, painless, and reversible.

Why not?

Please note. I know it isn't any of those things.

Dutch1e · 17/02/2017 20:44

Nokia3310 yes I have a son. He's not circumcised but if that's a legitimate option in many countries, why wouldn't this also be?

Agree with the posters who point out it should apply to girls too, except that getting tubes tied is major surgery whereas vasectomies aren't.

The PP who reframed it as "opting into fertility" pretty much summed up where I was going with the idea.

FGM is a "legitimate option in many countries" doesn't make it right!

BertrandRussell · 17/02/2017 20:46

Why is "opting in" to fertility such a bad idea?

Dutch1e · 17/02/2017 20:46

BertrandRussell exactly, thought experiment.

FGM is a thing in some countries too. Doesn't make it OK.
Doesn't mean we can fuck about with the anatomy of newborns because some people are fuckwits.

HirplesWithHaggis · 17/02/2017 20:47

Quite apart from anything else, is it even possible to perform a vasectomy when his balls haven't dropped?

HerRoyalFattyness · 17/02/2017 20:47

X-post with sirzy

BertrandRussell · 17/02/2017 20:48

Nobody interested in discussing?
