To want alcohol every evening?

emma2468 · 15/02/2017 18:09

I'd love a glass of presecco or a Bacardi & coke of an evening either with dinner or after the kids are in bed. Hubby is dead against drinking every day and thinks it should only be reserved for Fri/Sat/Sun evenings. A big part of this is due to him loosing his mum to bowel & liver cancer when she was only 60. Her only "bad habit" was a glass or two every evening. If I just say I'm having a drink he kind of makes me feel like an alcoholic! Not that he'd stop me just he'd disapprove and I'm a people pleaser 😄

Half of Europe has wine every day and always has done

Doesn't make it ok though. The rate of alcohol-related deaths in many European countries is higher than in the UK.

Trainspotting1984 · 15/02/2017 19:19

No problem having a drink every night, it's something some of the healthiest people in the world do. It's also sociable and relaxing.

I wouldn't be able to live with your DH as I like a drink and get annoyed with judgy puritans who don't understand addiction

confusedandemployed · 15/02/2017 19:20

YANBU to want it. To actually have alcohol every night is different.

I love a drink but I try not to drink during the week except tonight. At the very least my liver gets 3 nights rest a week, usually 5-6.

SquirrelSquad · 15/02/2017 19:29

Over the summer, I fell into the habit of drinking almost every day after work. I thought I "needed" it but actually, I was just hungry and thirsty. Once I started drinking more water and eating dinner earlier, funnily enough, the cravings went away.

I have a drink on a Saturday night with my takeaway, but even then I will wait till at least 8pm so that I can properly enjoy it.

Really? How many?

anothermalteserplease · 15/02/2017 19:37

Craving it is not a good sign. But in saying that I would have a glass of prosecco if the bottle was open as it'll not be great by the weekend.

PuntCuffin · 15/02/2017 19:40

Normally I'd agree with your DH, but if the bottle is open, you might as well have a glass rather than let it go flat.

brasty · 15/02/2017 19:45

I love the taste of red wine. And would love to drink it every night. I wish you could get a non alcoholic red wine that actually tasted like red wine. Apart from tea, I am not keen on any other drinks. Most soft drinks just taste too sweet. So I can sympathise OP. But yes, it is too much.

The UK is at 59. France, whose attitude towards alcohol is often admired, is at 19.

bunnylove99 · 15/02/2017 19:52

OP. You have half a bottle of prosecco in the fridge. It's going to go flat unless someone drinks it! Go pour...Wink

Trifleorbust · 15/02/2017 19:52

'Quite fancy' is different to 'craving'. Obviously drinking each day isn't he best thing for your health but if it's one it isn't the end of the world, but if you struggle to not have that one drink then that is different and needs addressing.

Trainspotting1984 · 15/02/2017 19:53

Alcohol deaths isn't about a glass of wine with dinner though. You're mixing up unrelated things to give a false picture of the "danger" of a daily drink or two

kel1234 · 15/02/2017 19:57

Not at all. I have a drink every night, not because I need one, because I enjoy it. I don't get pissed, in fact I have to drink a fair bit to get pissed.
Drinking because you want to is fine, it's when you drink because you need to, it's a problem.

Hatemylifenow · 15/02/2017 20:00

I don't see why anyone would need to have a drink every day. Or enjoy it really. But I don't much like the taste of alcohol.

brasty · 15/02/2017 20:33

I love the taste of red wine, and would be quite happy with the same taste and no alcohol. If you don't like the taste, no wonder you don't understand someone wanting to have a drink every night.

Hatemylifenow · 15/02/2017 20:36

I like red wine, just not enough to want to drink it every day.

SuperBeagle · 15/02/2017 21:11

If you think you need alcohol every day, or even if you desperately want it everyday, then I do think you have a problem. It's the mentality, not the action itself, that's the problem.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 15/02/2017 21:26

The UK is at 59. France, whose attitude towards alcohol is often admired, is at 19

But Spain is 98, where guidelines on drinking are much less strict, and they drink twice as much alcohol per head as the global average. And Italy, where daily wine is common, is at 111.

Sammysquiz · 15/02/2017 21:37

This is interesting showing numbers of alcohol-related deaths per country. Most of Europe is classed as having high rates of alcohol-related deaths.

meltownmary · 15/02/2017 21:44

Reverse comments somewhere out there methinks!

Go for it OP, have a drink if you want, the thought police will not know.

If you are concerned that's another thing, if you just want to have a drink after a long day, well just do it.

SuperBeagle · 15/02/2017 21:54

The stats are interesting. I would've thought the rate where I live would be higher, considering the stereotypes and the way the media and politicians bang on about a "binge drinking society".

Champagneformyrealfriends · 15/02/2017 21:55

I'd have a drink every night if it wasn't for the calories/baby waking up in the night. I love a glass of wine. It is so much better to have a few consecutive days off though.

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 15/02/2017 22:02

This is such a difficukt one.
We work from the house.. so we can actually spend our entire lives in the building. Going out to the pub ,(we still have a few in town) is a way of meeting people..

Then is can become a habbit. Or is it an addiction? I think you have a real problem if you can't not drink for a week or worse a night.

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 15/02/2017 22:03

difficult .... typing on an iPhaff

Oblomov17 · 15/02/2017 22:07

I do a dry January easily, but feel no better for it. Can easily not drink during the week.
Maybe just try cutting down OP?
