What is it about hotels that turn us into kleptomaniacs?

I'm convinced something happens to us when we enter hotels that means we have to take absolutely everything that isn't nailed down. I know someone who works as a concierge for a big fancy hotel and he says that a maid leaving the trolley in the corridor is basically inviting you to stuff your pockets with as much as you can before they come back.

My SIL got caught trying to smuggle a knife out of the restaurant of an hotel to peel the fruit she'd swiped for her lunch. She's known for being 'careful' thoGrin

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/02/2017 17:43

Sometimes I leave the toiletries behind depends how nice they are

Have been known to take home the opened little jam/honey/marmalade Blush but only ones we have used

melj1213 · 15/02/2017 17:47

I pretty much never take stuff home because whenever I travel I am either only staying overnight and so I actually use the products (if I haven't taken my own stuff) or if I'm there for a longer stay I have my own stuff anyway so don't need the mini hotel stuff ... and why would I take it for "next time I go on a trip" when the next hotel is going to have even more mini toiletries and the cycle will just continue?!

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 15/02/2017 20:07

The next hotel is going to have even more mini toiletries and the cycle will just continue?!

Ah well, there you go, the next time we go away it might be in a tent - where the teeny tiny pots of useful stuff means you don't have to heave a asda bag holdall across a field

WheresLarry · 15/02/2017 20:38

I always take the toilet roll, even if it's cheapy sandpaper quality I can't resist. If I'm staying for more than 1 night I put the unused toilet roll in my bag the next morning so it gets stocked up again so I can then take more home. I think I might have a problem.

BonnieF · 15/02/2017 20:39

It's odd how many people clearly don't understand how hotels work.

The cost of the little pots of toiletries, packs of biscuits, pens, sachets of coffee etc etc is included in the price of the room.

You have paid for this stuff. It's yours to do with as you wish. If you want to use / bin / eat / take it, fine. That's what it's there for.

If you want more stuff just ask the front desk or housekeeping staff. You are a paying customer, it's their job to keep you happy. They want you to come back. They aren't going to say no.

WheresLarry · 15/02/2017 20:42

I also like to take the little jars of jam and spreads from breakfast table, fruit, yoghurt, little extras to eat in my room later. God I love staying in hotels.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2017 20:46

I can never understand why people feel the need to fill their pockets from the breakfast buffet.

OneLumpOrSeven · 15/02/2017 21:28

I always take the mini shampoo bottles etc out the room, I've paid for them!

ArriettyClock1 · 15/02/2017 21:30

The toilet roll!?!

OMG - that really is tragic.

WhooooAmI24601 · 15/02/2017 21:33

The last hotel we stayed in I left my Jo Malone perfume, Molton Brown shower stuff and Liz Earle face wash in the bathroom.

DH said it was my comeuppance for taking all the lovely free tat from every other hotel I've ever been in. I do have a lovely sign on the bathroom door I nicked from Malmaison that says "clear up" on one side and "clear off" on the other. So DH is probably right.

WayfaringStranger · 15/02/2017 21:34

I can't say this is a thing for me. Raiding the trolley is really bad, I'm quite shocked that someone would openly admit to it.

GooodMythicalMorning · 15/02/2017 21:35

Taken the Disneyland ones every day so far but would never raid the trolley

HandsomeDevil · 15/02/2017 21:37

i take the complimentary shower gel only - the little bottles are handy for my swim bag. And maybe a pen if there is one. But I don't want the any of the other shite.

Iamastonished · 15/02/2017 21:43

Speak for yourself. I don't stay in upmarket hotels so the toiletries where we have stayed are cheap and nasty and not worth taking. I expect the hotel staff are amazed that most stuff in the bathroom hasn't even been touched.

JaceLancs · 15/02/2017 21:46

I only take toiletries if I will use them such as shampoo n soap - conditioner I prefer my own
I can't eat biscuits but was quite impressed by a hotel I stayed in recently that provided crisps nuts and copious quantities of bottled water which were replenished every day
I take fruit from breakfast buffet but that's all

ambereeree · 15/02/2017 21:53

Up to three years ago I used to travel alot for work and would stay in very swanky hotels. I've raided many trolleys in my time...i still have loads of molton brown shampoo and conditioner Blush
And loads of toothbrushes - great for guests.

ambereeree · 15/02/2017 21:55

Should be many a trolley

SherlockPotter · 15/02/2017 21:55

I take the free tea and coffee...

Llanali · 15/02/2017 22:05

I'll take nice tea bags, toiletries and the biscuits for the kids treats. I never take robes, slippers etc.

I don't raid the trolley, but will ask if I can have an extra water bottle or whatever when I see the maid.

Iamastonished · 15/02/2017 22:11

"I take the free tea and coffee"

Wow! That is really cheapskate. I prefer PG Tips and very rarely get that in hotels. I don't really like the tea and coffee I see in hotel rooms.

Rachel0Greep · 15/02/2017 22:13

I don't bother tbh. I use the coffees while I'm there, and bring my own toiletries. I use the pens and pads and sometimes throw them in my bag. I would never take stuff from a trolley.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2017 22:16

What are you going to do with a teeny sachet of coffee once you are home anyway? Confused

Iamastonished · 15/02/2017 22:18

"What are you going to do with a teeny sachet of coffee once you are home anyway?"

Or a crap, tasteless catering teabag? Make inferior tea and coffee I suppose.

tiredofhavingtothinkofnewnames · 15/02/2017 22:28

I spend over half the year in hotels. The novelty soon wears off.

I never really take anything (unless it is a teddy bear or duck that I don't already have and even then I hardly ever bother now). I usually leave the wine.

I don't take washbags from airplanes either or pjs.
