To think this is not standard in a hotel?

Staying in quite a nice hotel and housekeeping have knocked on once at 8am and once at 8.20am even though I said not yet thank you the first time. AIBU to think that's a bit intense? What if I'd been asleep still or in the shower, would they just have walked in on me?

I would always put my do not disturb card on if I was intending to sleep in, but I presumed that before 9am was pretty safe as people are still getting up, getting ready for work, etc?

Will just put do not disturb on tomorrow but wanted opinions!

Goodness you learn something new every day! I wouldn't have expected housekeeping to start knocking until after 9am or later at the weekend! I have never used the DND sign - will in future!

Olympiathequeen · 14/02/2017 09:32

YABU. Simple enough to put the DND sign on your door.

helpfulperson · 14/02/2017 09:33

I put a dnd sign up once in Croatia and about 9.30 the carpet outside my room got vigorously hoovered for what felt like a very long time. When I finally went to breakfast I was barely out the door when the chambermaid was in the room. I think I was getting in the way of her morning routineSmile

expatinscotland · 14/02/2017 09:34

I put DND on as standard.

ProfYaffle · 14/02/2017 09:39

The only time I've had a housekeeping knock that early was at the Liverpool Adelphi. They knocked and walked straight in while we were still in bed!

yanbu - I wouldn't expect a knock before about 10am tbh, let alone 2.

HearTheThunderRoar · 14/02/2017 09:40

Yanbu, I use to work for a well known worldwide hotel chain (in accounts, though) and our staff would never arrive earlier than 9am for housekeeping. Admittedly this was over 15 years ago so maybe a lot has changed since then.

I mean I wouldn't go knock on my neighbours door at 8am!

LostMyDotBrain · 14/02/2017 09:43

Fuck me, if you think that's intense you wouldn't be able to handle my standard Friday night. Netflix and a glass of prosecco Grin

NapQueen · 14/02/2017 09:51

Thing is the whole housekeeping team cant just wait to start until after check out time.some hotels thats 12noon. Even a 10am depart with a 2 or 3 pm check in doesnt leave enough time for the whole hotel to be turned around ready for the new guests.

And youd sharp be complaining if you couldnt get unto you room at check in time because the staff dont start until 11am or whatever.

They give you a choice. Run the risk if being disturbed or use the sign. At my work the housekeepers would be reprimanded for knocking on a dnd door.

Even after the check out time they ring down to reception first, we say yes or no to the guest having checked out in the system, and if theyve still not checked out we call the room rather than knock on a dnd door.

Use the bloody signs. Its very very easy to do.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 14/02/2017 09:55

Of course it's not standard. Housekeeping starts after the check out time. You'd be getting showerednor packing before that Confused

Usually the rooms of the people that stay over are cleaned later in the day, with the prioroty given to the switch over ones.

No it doesn't, the check out time in hotels is normally 12. Housekeeping start on a room once someone has actually gone.

Pemba · 14/02/2017 09:57

YANBU. That's ridiculously early to start knocking.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 14/02/2017 09:58

I've never experienced this either - far too early. Of course it's different if you've accidentally left the "please make up my room" side of the sign out or if housekeeping have already spotted someone leaving the room, and might reasonably think it empty. Not in general though. I'd only use the DND sign if I was staying in my room after breakfast.

Basicbrown · 14/02/2017 09:59

No, we were each given a list of 12 rooms. They were ours to clean and prioritise as we saw fit. Sometimes it was easier to clean the stays while they were at breakfast if no one had yet left.

Benedikte2 · 14/02/2017 10:02

I'm with you OP. Have never been disturbed that early and usually only see the maids on the way back from breakfast. Only put up the sign if planning a very late get up or planning to pack etc up until check out time. If you're travelling in you often want to use the bathroom again before you check out etc anyway. I think the staff are jumping the gun, maybe because management isn't giving them adequate time to complete their work

Oneiroi · 14/02/2017 10:02

That is what the DND sign is for. If you haven't hung it up then you can't blame them for knocking. They aren't telepathic.

malmi · 14/02/2017 10:16

So if they knock at 3am wanting to get a head start on the hoovering, that's the guest's fault for not putting the DND sign? What time should non-DND-sign-displaying guests be out the room to make way for housekeeping?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 14/02/2017 10:19

OK but that has been my exoerience. I've never been disturned before checking out and if I stayed over my room wpuld be done in the late afternoon (or sometimes not at all!). That's different hotels in England amd on the continent.

Oneiroi · 14/02/2017 10:25

Nobody is suggesting they would start at 3am, but 8am is not unreasonable or unusual having stayed in hotels all over the world. Many business people will have gone out for the day by then, and some guests checked out, so housekeeping cannot be expected to know you are still getting up if you don't use the sign.

It isn't hard to hang a sign on a door. In the scheme of things this seems a pretty petty thing to complain about when there is already a system in place to prevent it happening, with the tiniest effort imaginable required from the customer.

Roomster101 · 14/02/2017 10:27

If you are checking out that day I wouldn't expect them to knock on the door as they obviously want to wait until you have checked out (they would surely know if you had checked out or not). If you are staying another night and it's a week day then they could arrive at any time after 8 as even if you hadn't left you for work you could be having breakfast so you should use the DND sign.

KidLorneRoll · 14/02/2017 10:27

"So if they knock at 3am wanting to get a head start on the hoovering, that's the guest's fault for not putting the DND sign? What time should non-DND-sign-displaying guests be out the room to make way for housekeeping?"

Fairly obviously, you wouldn't expect a knock at 3am. However, if you don't bother to stick the sign on the door you can't moan that housekeeping are starting to turn rooms over at the same time as people are getting up and having breakfast.

If you don't want to be disturbed, use the sign that specifically requests that you aren't disturbed. Housekeeping staff aren't mind readers. They have a schedule to keep to, and one which is usually very tight if you want to be able to have access to your room at the time advertised.

bluebeck · 14/02/2017 10:33

I think it depends on where you are - in a holiday resort like Cancun, YANBU.

In a city like Manchester where the vast majority of rooms will be used by business people then YABU.

I always put the DND sign on as standard just in case!

Sundance01 · 14/02/2017 10:40

It is perfectly reasonable for them to knock and ask at that time - ideally they should not have knocked again so soon but hey ho these things happen. If something petty like this really annoys you - and lets be honest we all have things that annoy us that seem petty to others - then take action - like putting the DND sign on or telling reception you do not want housekeeping until later.

Basicbrown · 14/02/2017 10:47

they would surely know if you had checked out or not

I'd have thought that modern technology may start to facilitate this. However, when I did it (and it probably hasn't changed) the only way of finding out who had checked out was to ask at reception so no, they probably wouldn't.

MyWineTime · 14/02/2017 10:49

It is absolutely NOT standard!

If check-out is 10am, cleaning should not be done until after the guest has checked out - it would be a complete waste of time to go in and clean at 8am when the guest is having breakfast and might come back upstairs for a shower, brush teeth, use the toilet and to pack. The room would have to be cleaned twice.

If you are staying another night, I wouldn't expect to be disturbed before breakfast. If they start the cleaning rounds at 8am, I expect that to be clear in the hotel room information.
