To STILL be checking the baby's breathing?!

He's 5 months.

At what point does your heart stop flying into your mouth when they're sleeping, and doing that shallow sleep breathing. And you stare for ages to watch their chests rise and fall. Even though their cheeks are pink. And theyre all warm and cosy. And clearly alive but sleeping.

WHEN DO YOU JUST BELIEVE THEYRE FINE?!!!

(Lighthearted but also.... WHEN?!? Grin )

When he went to university ....

spiderlight · 13/02/2017 16:53

I still do it. DS is 10 next month. Years, not months. Blush

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 13/02/2017 16:54

When you stop checking your children sleeping, you move on to checking your elderly parents asleep in the armchair.

MommaGee · 13/02/2017 16:54

Hahaha Smile

MillieMoodle · 13/02/2017 16:55

DS1 is nearly 6 and I still check on him every night before I go to bed. If he's not well I check him a couple of times throughout the evening. Sometimes I have to poke him a bit to check Blush

DS2 is 5 months and sleeps in a travel cot next to my bed. He goes to bed when I do and I check on him whenever I wake in the night (which is quite often as DS1 still doesn't sleep through).

I suspect I will still be checking on them for as long as they live at home!

TheElephantofSurprise · 13/02/2017 16:55

She was at uni and back for the holidays, so probably about eighteen. I leave that sort of thing to her husband now. They co-sleep with their little one so I'd have to check all three of them...

Evilstepmum01 · 13/02/2017 17:06

Hahaha! Yup, DS is nearly 4 and I still check him!

My dad is 71 and doesnt keep well, he falls asleep in his chair a lot, so if he doesnt answer his door I panic, use my spare keys, let myself in and check for snoring!

We used to creep up on him and scare him awake, but his heart is too dodgy for that now!

OhhBetty · 13/02/2017 17:33

Ds is 2 and I still check!!

ladytrader · 13/02/2017 17:35

Mine are 7 & 4 and I do it every night. . . twice. I can't see myself stopping anytime soon.

user1472334322 · 13/02/2017 17:48

My dc are 5 and 2 and I always check on them when I go to bed. I can't help it! Can't go to sleep until I have!

Rhubarbara · 13/02/2017 17:48

I still do it. Mine are 8 and 12.

saoirse31 · 13/02/2017 17:50

Perfectly normal! Do as frequently as you want, way I always looked at it is if by doing it, you get a good nights sleep, then its win win!

Lima1 · 13/02/2017 18:11

Mine are 9,7 and almost 6 and I check on them before I go to bed and then whenever I wake during the night. I mainly go to check on DS5 as he has developed a scary habit of sleeping underneath the duvet and I'm afraid he will smother. I then feel obliged to check the other two!

WillWorkForShoes · 13/02/2017 18:30

Mine are 5 and 7 and I still check every night - only once though - I'm slowly getting better!

Pineapplemilkshake · 13/02/2017 18:48

I still do it to DS age 10! I have to stand on a chair to do it as he has a high sleeper, he says sometimes he knows I'm doing it and it gives him the creeps seeing my face so high up

paddypants13 · 13/02/2017 19:38

I still do it to dd (4) and ds (19 months). I can't help myself. Blush

RJnomore1 · 13/02/2017 19:40

I still check on my 17 year old occasionally 😳

She woke recently with my finger under her nose because she was so still I was worried she had stopped breathing. It may take a while for her to get over that one.

At other times she snores like a steam train though so I don't need to worry !

5moreminutes · 13/02/2017 19:48

You stop after a year of hourly night wakings with the lightest of light sleepers who wakes if you even think about him, let alone step on a creaky floor board going into his room...

Then you start again the first time he sleeps through a couple of years later when you wake in a blind panic at 5am assuming the only reason he hasn't woken you is that he's died...

But he's fine and wakes when you check on him so you stop again for a while and only peer in from the door before you go to bed ...

Weirdly I do check my heavy sleeping 9 and 11 year olds, but the risk of disturbing the youngest is too high!

Libitina · 13/02/2017 19:51

My DS is 23, if he's had too much to drink on a night out I still go in and check on him if he's alone that is.

MrsAukerman · 13/02/2017 19:54

About 6 m and since then I'm too scared that I'll wake him up if I go in to check! I only go in now to add or remove a blanket in extremely hot or cold weather.

Goondoit · 13/02/2017 19:54

My dd is only 13mo and this is why she's not in her own room! So I can hear her brrmeathing through the night!

iamapixiebutnotaniceone · 13/02/2017 19:56

It never stops! Mine are 7,4 & 2 and I still check multiple times a night!

Juanbablo · 13/02/2017 20:01

I check all my children are breathing before I go to bed at night. Ages 2, 6 and 9.

HopefullyAnonymous · 13/02/2017 20:04

I've never done this Hmm clearly I'm an awful parent!

Highmaintenancefemalestuff · 13/02/2017 20:06

Dd is 6 mo the I have a sensor pad under her mattress. I wouldn't be able to relax without it. I had it for Ds and used it up to 2 years. I still check on him when I go up to bed. Not often through the night as he's a sleep talker so when I hear him shouting in his sleep I can relax.
