In a world where a woman's best option for getting on in life was to partner up with a man who had a good income then have children, she would do the domestic labour and he the paid work, in that world men had more leverage.

peaceout · 14/02/2017 11:16

But look what happened in Iran, could the USA turn into a country where women are the property of men?
There are enough men who would like that to be the case, it just needs the people in charge to Chanel and facilitate

Neverthelessshepersisted · 14/02/2017 11:17

It's an ill wind that blows nobody no good.

The last month has been good for

Journalists
Proper news channels
Lawyers
Novelists
Satirists
Topical comedy shows.

originalbiglymavis · 14/02/2017 11:21

Women are not the property if men in Iran. It's only got crappiers since the revolution. Women there had more rights than we did pre 1978.

Look to Saudi for a long history of women being treated like chattel. That's never going to change.

cozietoesie · 14/02/2017 11:29

Lweji

That Seth Meyers quote about truth actually made me chortle. For the first time in a good few days.

In think that was the point of the comment. They had those rights and they lost them.
Still not as bad as some other places, but, still...

originalbiglymavis · 14/02/2017 11:32

It's still not nearly as shit as some places. Actually it's pretty crappy for most people, young and old.

squishysquirmy · 14/02/2017 11:37

I have no idea how that Oklahoma abortion law could possibly work in practice - how can a woman prove that she has "consent" from the father? How does the clinic know who she's had sex with? If a man can pop up after a termination, claiming that there is a strong possibility he was the father, will he be able to sue the clinic?
Because many abortion providers will not want to expose themselves to that sort of liability, and will either require onerous proof before performing terminations, or stop them all together.
So a not so unintended consequence of the bill would be that abortions are, in practice, as good as banned.

I take your point re: satire. But satire needs to be very well crafted to be anywhere near effective. McCarthy's SNL satire was a brilliant example of what works. Much of the satire we are seeing isn't at that level and that's why the comedy is getting as fatigued as we are. It's trying too hard.

And FWIW, I really don't think DT cares too much about things like that. He's more about the FAKE NEWS and money stuff and winning.

Kellyanne Conway is doing a pivoting dance with alternative facts in an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show. She looks shell-shocked.

Megatherium · 14/02/2017 12:14

What irritates me about the petition response is that in effect it's say May invited Trump, Trump said yes, so bog off. But what the hell was she doing inviting him? She must know what a dishonest, bigoted arsehole he is, and must surely be aware that there's a strong chance he will be impeached, which will render the entire visit a spectacular waste of time and money. It's not even as if it's likely to make Trump more friendly to the UK, particularly given the demonstrations he's likely to encounter once he gets here.

Megatherium · 14/02/2017 12:14

... in effect it's saying ...

Must proofread.

cozietoesie · 14/02/2017 12:22

She's no doubt seeing the writing on the wall, Seneca.

The thread has moved moved on but re the Baltic States:

From the Estonian border you can reach St Petersburg in a couple of hours, and from the Latvian border you can reach Moscow in about ten; there are currently Nato troops (including US special forces) stationed along those borders. Russia wouldn't think twice about taking back those countries and securing their borders if they thought they could successfully get away with it.

Lweji · 14/02/2017 12:49

I suppose securing those borders also reduces the chances of "undercover" Russian military crossing to wreak havoc in the Baltic states.

merrymouse · 14/02/2017 13:11

I think May knows all that Megatharium, but it would be too difficult now to uninvite him.

The visit has been postponed though - maybe she is hoping he won't last that long?

Deejoda · 14/02/2017 13:15

I too am of the opinion that comedy is a must in dark times. In my line of work, sometimes it is the only way to keep going. I think the satire in general is good. It is the non-satirical bashing that sometimes stoops to scrotus's level.
Again, we are comparing the US to a country like Iran...the US should be leading by example in progressive 'western' ideals (it certainly isn't right now).

Deejoda · 14/02/2017 13:18

merry the petition was to remove state honours (I signed it) not cancel the visit. He can do what he likes but at minimal cost to us the taxpayers. Maybe the visit should be held at his Scottish golf retreat...away from us all.

merrymouse · 14/02/2017 13:35

I know - I signed the petition. However, I dont think Trump is interested in coming to the UK of it isn't a state visit.

However, if the 'state visit' pretty much has to be carried out in hiding, and the royals are clearly just doing their jobs, it already isn't the state visit Trump wants.

The Queen is 90, Charles and Trump clearly have differences and the younger royals, for many reasons, aren't going to have the matey relationship with the Trumps that they had with the Obamas.

The current situation is that May has to host a state visit that is likely to be a complete flop.

Lweji · 14/02/2017 13:37

Another one who tried to warn the US:

His book "The Making of Donald Trump"

"As for the Trump presidency: be worried, be very worried. Trump is ignorant, ruthless, power-mad, loves money and has an insatiable need for public adoration. Let’s hope we all get out of this without Trump fulfilling his statements about starting wars and using nuclear weapons"

www.theguardian.com/books/2017/feb/14/david-cay-johnston-publishers-assumed-trump-would-soon-disappear

merrymouse · 14/02/2017 13:47

May is also going to have to fight for control of a visit while all the usual idiots - Farage, Morgan - compete for their spot in the limelight.

She can't do any trade deals with Trump but she is going to be linked to any carcrash events that surround him in August/September.

However, she made her bed...

BiglyBadgers · 14/02/2017 13:58

It increasingly seems like an offer made in haste that is more and more becoming an unwinnable situation. If she cancels she risks any chance of a trade deal while trump is in power (he would never forgive the insult I'm sure). If she goes ahead she not only has mass public outrage to deal with, but she will forever be seen as a Trump appeaser as he gets crazier and crazier. It could seriously damage relations and standing with any Country that stands up to Trump or just finds themselves on his wrong side.

As you say though merry, she made her bed. She really should have held off and waited a bit.
