I wonder how much of this the American people, especially Trump voters, are seeing of this?

FlyMeToTheMoonLiterally · 12/02/2017 23:35

I can't believe that he can just get away with such unprofessional conduct like talking strategy at dinner with other guests. I wonder how the rest of the GOP really feel about him namely Pence and Ryan

Thanks for the article on Bikkannavar - what worries me is firstly what tomorrow holds i.e the new ban and secondly even if it's torn up again by the judges, what the effect of these kinds of executive orders and the language of them has been on border control, I mean even when the ban was stopped, Trump said he had instructed border control to look at these people extremely 'carefully'...a poster in one of the previous threads said we could have lots of napoleons pushing the boundaries and the example of Bikkannavar illustrates that..all the border control officials will know Trump WANTS them to 'extreme' vet and so for the ones that sympathise with his cause, I worry that they will - ban or no ban Sad I can only hope that they value the law and that there will be procedures in place to stop abuse...

nicenewdusters · 12/02/2017 23:50

This reminds me of the Peppa Pig episode. Peppa wants to be like Mummy Pig, working from the home office. She dresses up like an adult, taps aimlessly at the keyboard and picks up the phone "Yes, no, goodbye." Little kid playing at being a grown up at work - just without the codes.

peaceout · 12/02/2017 23:52

He just has no idea how to do being President, does he?
or is it a deliberate show of power, the message is I own everything, I'm the boss and I can do as I please.

I think that's how the mafia and drug cartels in general operate isnt it...its all about machismo and respect.
sure it's primitive and barbaric but hey everything is black and white, might is right, no confusing nuances, men are men and woman do as they are told

cozietoesie · 12/02/2017 23:55

They're the same thing I fear, peace.

peaceout · 13/02/2017 00:07

I think it is also about showing his disdain for the conventions of the ruling elites
part of his 'drain the swamp' rhetoric
he is new, he is different
he storms in and does things his way
tells it like it is
what you see it what you get
no airs and graces

peaceout · 13/02/2017 00:12

xenophobia, misogyny, nepotism, authoritarianism, fascism?
dont worry about all those long words, they are FAKE THINGS
he's new, different, he tells it like it is!
enjoy!

SuburbanRhonda · 13/02/2017 00:17

its all about machismo and respect.

Someone (can't remember who) described both his and Putin's style as "cartoon machismo" which seems very apt.

"He just has no idea how to do being President, does he? I bet he felt really proud that the other diners could see him having important meetings."

saffron, nail on head there.

Just like to say I am 100% standing behind this thread. 100%

Thanks for the article you linked to in the New York Times ami. The stories from Abu Ghraib are horrific, just shows how the constitution is only as good as the men who represent it, it can be used for good or evil.
"We live in a democracy, so that document can be bent and twisted and re-formed to mean whatever we want it to." I looked at pictures from Abu Ghraib on a Google search, I've never seen anything as disturbing on all my life.

PausingFlatly · 13/02/2017 00:28

peaceout, if you have the time, you may find the Trump tapes interesting: a discussion between two journalists about the tapes one of them made of Trump (with his permission) for a biography.

player.fm/series/series-1251375/the-trump-tapes-part-ii-bottomless-pit-of-need

They surmise Trump doesn't know how to be anything, or what he himself actually wants; that even eg the garishness of Trump Towers is him playing at being a billionaire, and behaving how he thinks a billionaire might behave, rather than being something he enjoys for itself.

BTW, this would fit well with the suggestion that he has narcissistic personality disorder.

peaceout · 13/02/2017 00:30

Someone (can't remember who) described both his and Putin's style as "cartoon machismo" which seems very apt*

tautologous..machismo is a caricature of masculinity

peaceout · 13/02/2017 00:42

if you have the time, you may find the Trump tapes interesting
thanks Pausing I listened to them a while back when they were mentioned several threads ago, I agree they are worth a listen!

PlectrumElectrum · 13/02/2017 02:25

Has this already been posted? Apologies if it has - it's Rachel Maddow on MSNBC, a piece on 'senior WH' advisers asking about fake news re Poland invading Belarus, a story that originated in Russian propaganda. It takes a while to get to the point but it's really interesting & quite worrying at the same time.

An essay about Abu Ghraib and it's inevitability, for want of a better word.

It's also the quietest time of day on this thread. We should have a morning quiz or something else to keep us on our toes.
