Yesterday came home to find a bit of folded-up paper wedged in a crack in the fence wall bit (pavement goes right past it). Opened it up to find 2x2p coins inside unrecognisable writing - see pic!

It's not a taweez.

I still maintain its a dementia patients scribbles. Or black magic.

catface1 · 11/02/2017 14:41

It could be a 'Geocache' thing ? I think you can check via area on their website without being a member - maybe it will show up , they can be really random things with odd clues in code to find them . My friend does it with his kids and they find some strange stuff from time to time .

CalmItKermitt · 11/02/2017 14:41

Placemarking!

Screwinthetuna · 11/02/2017 14:52

Interesting! Hope someone figures it out, I'm intrigued!

allypally999 · 11/02/2017 14:55

Its not shorthand of any kind and yes I have had to read back other people's scrawls when I have temped or covered for sick leave .. shorthand has lines and loops which go above and below the lines and this is too universally neat. They all have things in common so you can read most of it even if its not the kind you usually write. Agree there are repetitions though as if someone is trying to learn this language whatever it is. I'm guessing its made up though.

If its geocaching there may be something hidden inside the coins . Or maybe there's a top secret memory card being passed between spies.

I'm enjoying this more than I should be. I must go hang up the washing...

Backt0Black · 11/02/2017 15:03

Quick Google seems the pennies could be related to 'protection' spells and 'hoodoo' ... never hear of 'hoodoo' either Confused. I've no clue on the scribbling

ILikeBeansWithKetchup · 11/02/2017 15:05

I don't know but given it's nearly Valentine's Day could this be some kind of love spell??
I am sure copper coins are involved in love charms.
Haven't read entire thread so someone else may have said this"
It could be a repeated phrase , therefore...

HerRoyalFattyness · 11/02/2017 15:06

Ooh wonder if tigerbreads SIL really did do it? Is your SIL a bit woo tiger? would it be usual for her to do this kind of thing?

I don't think it's anything to do with a dementia sufferer; my experience of people with dementia at least is they lose the ability and concentration to write grammatical sentences, not that they begin to write in code/ draw symbols. It looks closer to someone suffering a psychotic episode, but it could equally be a child's doodling or a charm of some kind. Given no one can definitively state the language, I'm guessing it is made up.

allegretto · 11/02/2017 15:08

I agree with Tinseltwins - I think it's a wart removal spell.

TiggyD · 11/02/2017 15:08

Not a geocache.

It isn't in a container, hasn't got a log to sign, hasn't got a cache number, etc

SpackenDeDoich · 11/02/2017 15:08

I'm going with Gecashing. I've found similar finds on my cashing days. I'd put it back and watch for hunters.

It's not shorthand. At least it's not pitman or teeline. Those are the only two I know.

user1484394242 · 11/02/2017 15:19

If its a spell or charm it could be this:

magic-spells-and-potions.com/simple_luck_spell_penny_for_luck.htm

With this verse written on it in a secret code or different language:

magic-spells-and-potions.com/money_in_my_pocket.htm

It might explain the first word/letters looking so similar

Cakingbad · 11/02/2017 15:22

As a PP asked, is your fence on a crossroads? Lots of superstitions about getting rid of all sorts of diseases, evil influences, curses etc at a crossroads. In which case, the good news is it's not about you!

Cakingbad · 11/02/2017 15:23

Don't keep the coins if you don't want to catch what the leaver wants to pass on!

TinselTwins · 11/02/2017 15:25

In which case, the good news is it's not about you! incase you believe the woo, in which case the idea is that by finding the coins you take on the disease/curse and it leaves the loonie person who put the coins there Wink

TinselTwins · 11/02/2017 15:26

Unless, not incase..

brooklyn66 · 11/02/2017 15:31

Not at a crossroads and I put it back so don't have the coins or paper.
As makingmerry says, no-one's been able to recognise this definitively as a language so I still think it's made up.

hotdiggedy · 11/02/2017 15:31

If it was someone practicing a new language I cant imagine why they would fold it up and stick it in a wall. I am going with the idea that its some kind of magic spell or someone with lots of time on their hands who hid it there for someone to find and become perplexed about.

Cakingbad · 11/02/2017 15:35

I want to get rid of my DDs boyfriend. Might write a few verses about him in code and leave it with a £2 coin at the crossroads near her school in the hope some other girl picks it up.

TinselTwins · 11/02/2017 15:37

Damn it thought I'ld cracked it with the crossroads thing.

Is your house near anything else that might be useful in a spell, like a river, canal, bridge etc? grasping at straws now
