Yesterday came home to find a bit of folded-up paper wedged in a crack in the fence wall bit (pavement goes right past it). Opened it up to find 2x2p coins inside unrecognisable writing - see pic!

For some reason Mongolian is niggling at the back of my mind but would seem very strange.. that sits on same language group as Finnish, Hungarian and Turkish so could it be any of those?

Can confirm its definitely not Finnish.

Hypergraphia seems the most likely answer but interested to find out now!

KieiGeekMum

Nice detective work. Even if It doesn't prove it a particular language it suggests it's not random scribblings.

It's handwritten and that means it might not be possible to work out exactly what it is. My own handwriting is almost unreadable by anyone else if I'm writing in a hurry

tartansnowman · 11/02/2017 12:09

I hope it turns out to be a shopping list like in Foucault's Pendulum.

ReapAndSow · 11/02/2017 12:09

You need to sprinkle a circle of salt on the ground around the spell, light four candles at the compass points and then burn some sage or incense and then burn the paper and bury the coins. You could also give the coins to charity which would be better.

Really, I'm sorry to be dismissive but it's bonkers to suggest things like this.

SouthernNorthernGirl · 11/02/2017 12:10

I'm intrigued , so I'm place marking. Grin

Oh sorry Grin I thought you were being serious 😂

HappyFlappy · 11/02/2017 12:22

No - it's not runes. I read runes and it isn't runes.

shockthemonkey · 11/02/2017 12:25

Definitely not Turkish

Fluffyears · 11/02/2017 12:27

Ooh I'm really intrigued by this.

shockthemonkey · 11/02/2017 12:28

Turkish has used roman alphabet since the late 1920s. Before then it used a special script very close to Arabic script.

haveacupoftea · 11/02/2017 12:33

Sherlock would have this figured out in seconds. Tweet it to Benedict Cumberbatch Grin

I've put it through some language recognition sites and it's coming up as unknown. Do you have a school near you? Could it be kids lines or secret language? We usually get sweet wrappers and empty coke cans in ours but we've also had some school work and other random papers

sotiredbutworthit · 11/02/2017 12:38

Wiccan? Maybe the coins are to bring you wealth?

What on earth is this? (Found outside my house)
SlankyBodger · 11/02/2017 12:46

I have heard that Paganism/Wicca is one of the fastest growing religionsp atm. Though, in fact, Paganism is different from Wicca, so I imagine that neither on its own is among the faster growing religions.

I'm not religious myself, but think that the growth in religious belief (of any stripe) shows how lost people feel in today's society. It would serve western governments well to pay attention to that or we'll have all sorts coming out the woodwork.

I'm a bit freaked out by this. When I was little and growing up in a little island far away from uk, there used to be a woman who made us write spells and fold it neatly using copper and then bury it somewhere.

It kind of brought it all back to me. Not sure what language this is but clear that there's a repetition.

Have u upset someone lately OP? Or have a rift with someone?

snowbooties · 11/02/2017 12:57

The way it's so neatly folded and if u look carefully there r little holes as if someone has pricked the paper with needles or something similar.

I'd definitely say it's a spell of some sort.

snowbooties · 11/02/2017 13:02

What's also interesting is that it's been nearly folded 7 times. That's a very ominous number for people who do spells and black magic.

Interestingly, first block of writing is in 6 lines and second, 12 lines.

Would be interesting to see what years r on the coins but I'm guessing OP doesn't have that info anymore.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 11/02/2017 13:02

On the suggestion it looks like hiragana: it really doesn't look like hiragana to me, and in any event it would be strange to write whole blocks of text out in hiragana rather than using kanji.

Timetogetup0630 · 11/02/2017 13:10

Those of you who are scoffing at the witchcraft suggestions..... I live close to several Neolithic burial mounds which are regularly used for pagan rituals. Candles, herbs, charms are very evident.

WetsTheFinger · 11/02/2017 13:15

Definitely not Hebrew (my first language)

Very interesting though!

Sassenach85 · 11/02/2017 13:18

A spell that is cast on you just by looking at it!!

And now it's on the internet we are all cursed!!

Maybe...

Confused
travailtotravel · 11/02/2017 13:24

Mongolians use the cyrillic alphabet, and it ancient mongolian script looks more like arabic in its written style than oriental script - which this does look more like.

I am intrigued!
