To think this petition is not ok

Just that really - a man convicted of possessing indecent images of children has returned from prison and gone back to live at his parent's house. The locals have got hold of this information and have now set up a petition to get him 'rehomed' somewhere with no children. Outer Hebrides?
My view is he's done his time, he wants a fresh start, as long as he keeps himself to himself then just let him be? This petition doesn't sit well with me at all.

If you think they are the only ones in your area ella I would bet my bottom dollar they are not.

Sorry, where did I say that? I think I said that known paedophiles are more recognised - obviously? Confused

Morphene · 10/02/2017 00:26

I wonder if the 'burn them' brigade would give longer sentences for child rape than for child murder, in spite of the apparent insanity of that value judgement?

Sweets101 · 10/02/2017 00:31

It is pornographic to the person using it which is why that term (rightly or wrongly) is used.
As I said before a dead child is not the the only victim of child sexually abuse there are many many more.
The reason drink driving is treated different is because whilst it is still abhorrent there is not the premeditated intent. A bit like manslaughter and murder I suppose.

YouHadMeAtCake · 10/02/2017 00:31

Well actually if any people in my life do think " I'm such an amazing person " it is absolutely irrelevant to my thoughts and beliefs , as are most of your points.

Killing them after the crime takes place? Yes indeed, but they certainly can't reoffend if they're dead.

Soo what would you like to be done about him OP? Would you like him to move in next door to you and your dc? I was raped repeatedly as a child - and photographed - for the pleasure of these sickos. I wouldn't want to think there was a paedo living next door to me or mine. Maybe you would have to experience it to recognise the harm it does? Maybe you would realise the harm it does if this monster preyed on your own children? A light sentence or a "petition" is a fucking joke! Public hanging would be more suitable and more of a deterrent for these monsters

SharkBrilliant · 10/02/2017 00:32

No, they'd both be killed if it were up to them.... obviously.

The moral of the story- if you are going to download pictures of children then you might as well torture, rape and kill a child because it's all just as bad, apparently.

Sweets101 · 10/02/2017 00:33

ella i only meant that the majority of paedophiles/sex offenders in your area you won't/shouldn't know about unless you have cause to. That's all.

ellamoromou · 10/02/2017 00:38

I agree sweet - the majority of sex offenders are unrecognised - and those convicted where the public know where they are is a good thing. You can warn your children not to go anywhere near. You can't do that with the outcast who lives somewhere with a name change in remotesville.

THAT'S why petitions like in the OP do more damage than good.

GwenStaceyRocks · 10/02/2017 00:41

The PPs saying that being reintegrated into the community makes a paedophile less likely to offend, can you link to the studies please? Because I have waded through extensive serious case reviews after paedophiles have reoffended and even escalated to murder, and none of them cited research like that or had based their policies around it.

Sweets101 · 10/02/2017 00:41

- if you are going to download pictures of children then you might as well torture, rape and kill a child because it's all just as bad, apparently
Let's be clear now, downloading sexual abuse/pornographic images of children. The idea people do this 'by accident' or out of 'curiosity' is utter crap. It is real children suffering real abuse, to view it is to condone it. People share to encourage, none of it is not premeditated.

Sweets101 · 10/02/2017 00:43

But equally ella the odds are the vast majority of those signing the petition wouldn't know about it if it wasn't for the petition. So it's a catch 22 really.

anaiis · 10/02/2017 00:44

Shark yes indeed - and apparently even thinking about viewing images is as bad, so we should kill all of them as well.

No one has the right to take the life of another person, however abhorrent the original crime. An eye for an eye til we all go blind etc.

Also, to point out: In respect of indecent images, the offense is possession, irrespective of whether the offender downloaded it for sexual gratification or not, the police just have to prove you had it, not what your intent was.

Morphene · 10/02/2017 00:51

Downloading such images is bad. It is really bad. But it isn't as bad as actually killing people.

It really really isn't.

I fail utterly to understand that anyone would be happier to live round the corner from a murderer, a drug dealer, a rapist....ANYONE but a person convicted of possession of child sex abuse images.

YouHadMeAtCake · 10/02/2017 00:53

SharkBrilliant · 10/02/2017 00:55

I have not once said that it's an accident or done out of curiosity and I think it's absolutely appropriate that it is treated as a serious crime. However, if you have a "one size fits all" punishment for all child sex offences then it can actually make the problem worse.

For example, if the sentence for rape was the same as the sentence for murder, then you might as well kill the victim afterwards to get rid of the witness. If we did as some PPs are suggesting of hanging all paedophiles in the street, you would end up with an "in for a penny, in for a pound" result. Seriously, can people not see that this would actually result in more children being harmed??

SharkBrilliant · 10/02/2017 01:00

I feel like I'm watching a puppet show and the puppets are made from socks.

Well, since my "Kill All Paedophiles Deathray" isn't working right now, I thought I might try to throw in a couple of rational points about how villifying people doesn't actually deter them and that maybe we have to look at the bigger picture.

pineapplesplit · 10/02/2017 01:07

There are thousands of reasons people may look at child porn. Accident is actually one of them. I genuinely know someone who did, he was taken to court and it was acknowledged it was an accident. (pornography addiction he was downloading vast swathes of porn sometimes on public computers and not always checking the content) He didnt serve any jail time but had to attend counselling.
The ward i worked was full of men who had been viewing child porn due to a number of factors to do with their various mental illnesses. Again this had all been acknowledged at their trials.
Some of those men had no concept of what they were doing as wrong because they had extremely low levels of understanding generally, lived in a complete fantasy world or it was a compulsive behaviour caused by anxiety, usually because they themselves had been abused as children.

Its much harder to write people off as evil when you see them first hand and despite the disgusting nature of their crimes see how vulnerable and disturbed some of them actually are. When you have to care for them day to day and hear the details of their lives and the horrific abuse many of them have sufferred themselves its hard not to think about the chain of events that led to them committing a crime. Its hard not to think of them as human and part of society. The thing is theres no such thing as evil, people just pretend there is to comfort themselves and distance themselves from how mundane these sickening things can actually be. Sorry to say but with the right type of mental instability and the right upbringing anyone could end up looking at child porn and its only luck your own life began the way it did. Its not because you are good and they are evil. Its because of a cycle of human events. So i think everybody owes it to everyone involved to properly consider what is going on and why, and what we can do about it rather than just killing people. For the victims, the perpetrators, and society in general we all ought to actually give a fuck about it, rather than just want it as far away from us as possible so we dont have to consider it any more.

ellamoromou · 10/02/2017 01:10

I absolutely stand by that mob rule is not the way.

We as a society, view paedophiles akin to murderers etc. Kill them. Murder them. etc.

I have to disagree - the paedophile in my family is full of remorse and perpetrated what he'd learnt as a child himself - he absolutley won't offend again as he recognises what he did was abhorrent - if the person he abused can forgive then who am I to disregard her feelings x

pineapplesplit · 10/02/2017 01:12

which is what 'kill them' actually is. Its 'get this away from me i dont like it i dont want to think about' which may be understandable but not really helpful in any way at all. Children will continue to be abused regardless. But i suppose thats fine because at least the 'kill them' brigade will have got to express their anger about it and know that that particular paedo is now dead.

YouHadMeAtCake · 10/02/2017 01:32

hmm
There are children in the outer hebridies too!

and more so a risk as no one bothers with supervision there. Just let them off into the moors to enjoy life Grin

Ahhh, great memories.

Garden you're finding humour in the Moors murders?

AlmostAJillSandwich · 10/02/2017 01:36

I appreciate that people don't have control over who they find sexually attractive, and in some cases, people are attracted to children. It surely has to be something "wrong" with their brain, they can't just choose not to feel how they do.
I have genuine sympathy for the ones who are horrified by their feelings and never act upon them, and try to find help. They must spend every day of their lives terrified of someone finding out, which isn't going to make seeking help easy.
I lose all sympathy the second they view a single image of a child being abused. It is absolutely a choice that they have control over and choose to make. Once they cross the line of actively being a part of the abuse, they deserve everything they get. I don't believe rapists, sex offenders or pedophiles can be "rehabilitated". Once they've offended, they are a danger for life. They aren't crimes that happen by accident, and they fuel further abuse by viewing these images and videos and proving there's a sick "market" and profit to be made in it. Even if they view only one image, they've played a part in that childs abuse, abuse that the poor child will almost certainly never recover from and suffer for life. If they view 10 images, thats 10 lives they've helped ruin. Some of these offenders have viewed thousands of images or more, even if they never molest or rape a child themselves they absolutely deserve locking up for life from their very first offense, same as rapists. If the victim has to suffer for life, so should the offenders.

SharkBrilliant · 10/02/2017 01:40

YouHadMeAtCake - Garden you're finding humour in the Moors murders?

You do realise that there are moors all over the UK, don't you? Saddleworth isn't the only one.

Implying that someone finds the Moors murders funny because of a harmless comment really isn't fair. Grow up will you.

YouHadMeAtCake · 10/02/2017 01:47

Shark dfod it's pretty fucking obvious . Grow up? Really. Lame. Like your posts. Don't bother adressing me further, I have no desire tomconverse with you.

SharkBrilliant · 10/02/2017 02:09

YouHadMeAtCake I'm glad to say that for anyone who can read properly, it's not pretty fucking obvious that Garden found humour in the Moors murders. Trying to make out that someone finds child killing funny is very unfair and deliberately taking the comment out of context.

If you thought my posts were lame and have no desire to converse with me, then why post a comment directly to me? (with the caveat of "don't bother addressing me" so that you can get the last word in Hmm)

Wipe the foam off your mouth dear, it's not a good look.
