Imagine this has been done to death but have just seen another thread where the op is being to,d to lock her door, is this normal? In the day? I don't think I know any door lockers but maybe I should start in case of burglars, I did wonder when reading a thread this evening as DC were asleep upstairs and I don't think I would hear from sitting room if someone quietly wandered in through front door, ddog would either greet them enthusiastically or carry on snoring

Exactly Blonde. I would probably lock myself out every time I went to the bin if I had Yale locks.

The effort you save by not having to use a key to lock the door is wiped out by fiddling with latches to stop you locking yourself out, or having to get back in somehow when you do. I'm sure they're easier to break into as well.

Locked at night or when I'm out, unlocked during the day, wide open in summer to air the house properly.

We have a new door with the mortar lock thingy on it - but as an improvement on the "needs a key to open from inside or outside" it has keyhole on the outside an a turbo knob on the inside.

Perfect - you have to use a key from outside so can't accidentally lock yourself out, and you do not need a key from the inside, so cannot lock yourselves in (friend's son died when he couldn't find the front door key in a fire).

Before that I had a Yale lock, used to leave it on the latch during the day and snick it overnight.

Of course things will art depending on how and where you live. Relatives who were repeatedly burgled have multiple high security devices on their house. Friends who live behind security gates are more lax about open windows.

Completely missing the point and I know OP has said its a typo but every time I see the thread title I read it into myself in a Scottish accent.

I never do except at night. (And no, not locking a door whilst you are IN does not invalidate your insurance!)
However, it's impossible to get inside mine without noise and the way it's laid out, I'm aware even when someone is just walking into my garden.
Also, there has been only one house burglary in our village in many years. (Local farm outbuildings and people's sheds not included. There is a market for farm machinery and quads that make the farms a great target)

but it might do.....

Totally agree - so why are some posters so horrified and aghast that some of us are quite happy to sit in the house during the day with the door unlocked?

I can only conclude that its because they are thinking of their own home and opinion and can't imagine other peoples varying situations being very different from theirs.

LolDeLol · 10/02/2017 14:09

I'm not 'horrified and aghast' (hyperbole anyone?) at what other people do in their own homes. I don't care. 😱😱😱

I don't have window locks or a standard motrice or Yale key (just a key that looks like it's for a padlock!) - all declared to my insurance company - and I've had over for years. Some of you need to shop around if your insurance specifies that you need to be locked in like a prisoner! Wink

I always lock my door. It was drummed into me from childhood to be security conscious. Anyone could walk in otherwise. I've had someone force their way in once and it's terrifying. The same with leaving the car boot open while taking bags in. Just don't unless you're inviting the local ne'er do wells to have some free shopping. It's taken my rurally raised DH years to get up to speed with this one.
