to hate living in Coventry?

Inspired by the I hate living in Manchester thread, I lived in London for many years but moved back here as I had been made redundant and my dad had severe dementia and was going blind so I moved back home to look after him. He's now in a home because after 2 years, I couldn't cope with it any more. So I'm now living in a city I really do not enjoy being in. I find many people to be both narrow minded and overtly racist, there's virtually nothing going on artistically or culturally, the bars and restaurants are shit and its just dull dull dull. I feel like I'm just biding my time waiting to die here.

I miss London so much but I could never afford to live there now as its got so ridiculously expensive. I used to go back a lot but I've stopped as it made me feel too depressed. The job opportunities are v poor here in comparison ( used to work as a trainer for a charity ) and am struggling to find any meaningful, well paid work. Final moan, there's a real lack of decent, interesting, cultured men up here, so haven't met many guys on my wavelength. In London I dated men who were journalists, lawyers, architects, writers etc but up here most pp seem to work in the motor industry and I just have nothing in common with them!

Only good things about being here is that drinks are cheaper, air is cleaner and its an easy city to get out of!

ah - Wheatleyan and Covtilldie are the "other" old Coventrians Grin

Wheatleyan · 11/02/2017 17:56

No, no, no, NO! Good God, I am in no way and never will, would or could be an "Old Coventrian".

emwithme · 11/02/2017 17:57

As an Old Coventrian, I'd suggest that they were both Old Wheatleyans. Particularly Wheatleyan not that the name is a giveaway The houses at Henrys were Whites, Sherwyns, Hales, Hollands and Kings, now just the first four.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 11/02/2017 18:04

Ooooh!! I'm up for a meet up Grin

I love living in Coventry. Its got its bad point like any city, & im lucky that i live really close to Coundon Wedge so lovely countryside in one direction and the city centre a 10 min drive in the other.

There are lots of plans for regeneration in the pipeline - its only going to get better

don't start me on the bloody ring road though

LynetteScavo · 11/02/2017 18:05

Move to Leamington (cheaper than London, but more cultured than Coventry)

Work in London and live in Rugby?

I have never felt any love for Coventry. Because of work, DH knows it like the back of his hand, and thinks nothing of wanting to nip into the city center for no obviously good reason.

The only good thing about Coventry is Ikea, and maybe Ice skating, if that's your thing.

I'm always Shock at Coventry house prices. I mean, who actually wants to live there? Confused

HelloCanYouHearMe · 11/02/2017 18:09

Live in dRugby?! 😂😂😂😂😂😂

beela · 11/02/2017 18:11

Oh yes, "other" old Coventrians.... well I'll still wave anyway because I'm nice like that Wink

CovtilIdie · 11/02/2017 18:14

Test for the grey matter...

As I recall at Bablake the houses were Wheatley, Baileys, Fairfax and Crow.

Chuckling at the memory of fierce inter-school competition...

MaximumVolume · 11/02/2017 18:37

@bertiebotts nowhere is scary in Old Town Leam now! I live in your exclusion zone & it's much safer than the desirable area of Brum I grew up in! House prices are so high it's all doctors and architects with young kids round here now.

On the topic of the thread, I really like Cov (and I've lived in London & Edinburgh as well) there's lots on & lots nearby. My sister doesn't access so much on London because it's nearly an hour from her flat exec though she lives there (Greenwich) I could almost win a race to MYB from here!

LynetteScavo · 11/02/2017 18:39

Rugby also has 2 Aldi's.

And you can be in London in 50 mins.

I'm convinced the people who laugh at Rugby just want to keep the house prices down.

Unfortunatly it has very few shops, unless B&M bargains is your thing.

ivykaty44 · 11/02/2017 18:42

Maximum vol, I grew up in the zone ( not far from the undertakers) and it's never been scary.

LynetteScavo · 11/02/2017 18:48

The scariest think about Leam Old Town is walking under the railway bridge with the pigeons who are likely to shit on your head.

BertieBotts · 11/02/2017 21:05

No that was my zone of where is okay Grin

It probably depends what you're used to to be fair, but the tower blocks on Brunswick street were always dodgy and the park on the rec near Shrubland Street never very nice with broken glass and the play equipment often vandalised.

Actually my dad lived v near all of this too when I was younger and it never seemed scary then except for derelict factories by the canal.

Yes it's probably not as bad as a city, but still.

alpacawhacker · 11/02/2017 21:06

I'm not mentioning this because I think it's particularly a selling point, but in the interests of correctness I have to point out that Coventry actually has four Aldis. Grin

HelloCanYouHearMe · 11/02/2017 22:13

Five if you count the one being built near Toll Bar island

DevelopingDetritus · 11/02/2017 22:14

I'm always shock at Coventry house prices. I mean, who actually wants to live there? confused Well obviously loads of people Hmm

HelloCanYouHearMe · 11/02/2017 22:18

Kenilworths house prices are beyond stupid. £250k for a small mid terrace with no garden and no parking in a town with a waitrose and nothing else buy charity shops...

That budget would get you something very nice in Coventry

Teacupinastorm · 12/02/2017 10:25

@lynettescavo people who've grown up there? People who have family there and like to be near to them? People who think it isn't the dump you apparently think it is?
No it's not the best city in the uk, not even close. But some people like it. There's no need for comments like that.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 12/02/2017 10:57

I work in Coventry and live on the outskirts of Warwick...I don't particularly like Cov city centre, but I do enjoy living in the midlands. Maybe one of the other places suggested would work for you and you could still be near your dad?

I've lived in leam and Kenilworth too! Grew up in Warwick.

My friend lives on the new estate on the Sydenham by Asda - it's really lovely there!

Glastonbury · 12/02/2017 11:21

@LynetteScavo it's laughable you think Rugby is nicer than Coventry. Clearly many people do like living in Coventry and that's why so many new houses are being built and sell almost immediately.

Mamia15 · 12/02/2017 11:34

Glastonbury - there are loads of new houses being built in Rugby as well Confused

Also house prices are much lower in Coventry with an average price of £177,683 compared with £211,661 in Rugby.....

Glastonbury · 12/02/2017 11:39

@Mamia15 my comment was directed at Lynette who questioned why anyone would want to live in Coventry.

I would pick Coventry any time over Rugby.

Mamia15 · 12/02/2017 11:47

So....? Nothing wrong with me providing facts re house prices and number of houses being built then....

BertieBotts · 12/02/2017 12:34

Yes the new Sydenham estate is better. I looked at a house there a few years ago but was turned down by landlord for being on DSS - nice. House was lovely though and while looking at it we found a nice walk in the fields by a stream where we met a friendly horse.

beela · 12/02/2017 12:51

I know the stream you mean! Lovely.
