Maybe I am, but one bucket?

Let me say I usually do the cleaning of floors. We have a moderate sized 3 bed semi which has ceramic tiled floors throughout the downstairs and two dogs!

I Hoover and sweep the floors every day and will spot clean. Or use a floor wipe where the dc have split a drink etc. Then 3/4 times a week I will mop as well.

I use one bucket of water with cleaner for the hallway and lounge, another for the dining room and study and another for the kitchen and utility.

Dh has the day off today and so while I took the dc to school he made a start on the floors. I came home and he was just finishing the dining room and about to start the kitchen. He didn't change the water. I asked as casually as I could when he changed the water and he said he didn't need to one bucket was enough for the downstairs and he'd change it to do the bathroom and loos upstairs

I'm now at work thinking I need to do the floors again when I get in as kitchen at the very least won't be very clean. It's been wet and muddy here so the water won't have been very clean for the kitchen floor.

You need a robot Hoover... And the mopping version!

Maybe I am, but one bucket?
LakieLady · 08/02/2017 20:52

I feel ashamed now. I only clean the kitchen floor when my shoes start sticking to it or when something has been spilled. Last time I got the mop out, it was covered in cobwebs.

I really wish I gave a fuck about housework,

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 09/02/2017 08:23

Ooh Chish now your talking a mopping robot!!! I really need to get out more

A mopping robot???!!! I wants!!!

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 09/02/2017 08:54

i really wanted a Roomba...two dogs, two cats...dust bunnies EVERYWHERE, it seems ideal!

BUT then I read the tale on here of the lady who came home and discovered her poor dog had pooped in the house and the Roomba had evenly distributed it all over the ground floor of the house.

It put me off a bit.

LaChatte · 09/02/2017 09:46

You need a Vileda 1-2 Spray mop.

shovetheholly · 09/02/2017 14:58

Seriously, I have a Neato Botvac connect and it saves me SO much time - I am evangelical about it. I have clay soil and an extremely messy cat who has the ability to distribute mud from his paws all over the house with gay abandon. It is every bit as labour-saving as my dishwasher and my washing machine.

I was an early adopter of robot hoovers (because I hate vacuuming) and this is the 3rd one I've had and definitely the best. It sends me texts on my phone if it needs help and to tell me when it's started and finished cleaning. I can also look at a map of the rooms so I can see if it missed a bit.

There is always that poo problem, but that's only really an issue if you schedule cleans and can't have a quick visual check of the floor beforehand. If you do it when you're home, you can have a quick check around before starting.

ChuffMuffin · 09/02/2017 15:24

Unicorn you are not alone! I have a large, long haired double coated dog who seems to be actively trying to go bald on a daily basis, despite regular grooming with a Furminator. I don't understand how she can shed so much hair and not be bald. She defies science. And if she goes out for a wee and comes back in at this time of year, my floor looks like Dont's picture! I have laminate in my lounge and vinyl in my kitchen. I sweep with a rubber broom from JML (BEST THING EVER), then hoover, then use one of those spray mops with the washable pads or a floor wipe for any mud spots.

Werkzallhourz · 09/02/2017 16:27

We have a cat who has a cat flap and goes in and out nearly every hour. He trails mud and dirt through the house.

I use two buckets for downstairs: one with bleach for the stone floor in the kitchen and utility, and one with vinegar for the tiles in the hallway and dining room. Upstairs I use wooden floor cleaner, so that is another bucket.

I do the kitchen, utility and hallway once a week (with a spot clean every few days) and everything else once a fortnight.

I am quite nervous, however, about what the cat may bring in on his paws. We are semi-rural so there's a lot of animal faeces and dead animals around.

Ethylred · 09/02/2017 17:18

Hoovering will be my special subject on Mastermind and this is very nearly a hoovering thread so I'm taking over now.

Hoover the fucking dog.

mygorgeousmilo · 09/02/2017 18:02

Stop wearing shoes in the house if people are traipsing mud everywhere to that degree

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 09/02/2017 22:05

We don't wear shoes in the house. If we could get the dogs to wear shoes we would might save some cleaning then!

I am quite slovenly when it comes to things like putting clothes away ignoring the pile next to my bed now and hoovering upstairs it's just the floors downstairs.
In many ways glad it's all tiles as at least we don't need to worry about losing deposits for manky carpets etc.

I just showered the Labrador after a particularly muddy walk and river swim and it's taken me ages to get all the hair out of the shower. How does a dog lose so much hair and still have such a thick glossy coat? Although then I moan that the westie hair cut costs more than mine. Blush

It is moments like that I am grateful yet again that ddog refuses to go out when it is too wet or too cold, and doesn't do muddy or puddles or well water tbh... very thin coats so doesn't moult much either!!!

PidgeyfinderGeneral · 09/02/2017 22:17

Fucking hell. I can't remember the last time I cleaned our floors. DH does it if he thinks it's really embarrassing (I don't care) or it gets done by the cleaner every other week. However, I mitigate this by stating we don't have kids or pets so it's hardly every truly disgusting.

CloneClubSestra · 10/02/2017 05:38

Uh oh... Moved into this house 7 years ago. Have a dog, and lots of people over frequently... I have never mopped the floors. Yes I clean up spills. My mother visited and mopped them once, and I paid my DD to mop it a couple of months ago. The patterned tiles don't show the dirt but the white ones look a little grey Grin Blush

Chasingsquirrels · 10/02/2017 09:15

I am just loving the thought of a robot vacuum that sends a text if it needs help.

I've got my 10 & 14 ds's doing most of the vacuuming now - they each do their own room then one does lounge & playroom and the other does stairs, landing (v small) & bathroom plus ds1 will do the spare room irregularly.
Which leaves hard floors in hall, downstairs loo, dining room (which is rarely used and almost never mopped) and kitchen/conservatory/utility room. I sweep through most days but mop very infrequently. I used to have a cleaner who did it weekly.

I might investigate the robots further.

Jojobythesea · 10/02/2017 09:26

Agree with PovertyJetset. Superb. Sweep and then steam. Easy.

Chinnygirl · 10/02/2017 09:27

We also have a steam mop and the house has never been cleaner. I highly recommend it.

taptonaria27 · 10/02/2017 09:32

I don't clean anywhere near as much as you but when I do mop I change the water for each room. So one bucket for the hall, one for dining room, one for playroom and usually two to do kitchen.
I loathe dirty mop water. However, we have lived here 10 years and my DH has never mopped so mane you should cut him some slack!

n0ne · 10/02/2017 13:30

We don't own a mop

gets coat

BastardGoDarkly · 10/02/2017 15:41

Shock what do you do then n0ne?!

voldemortsnose · 10/02/2017 22:58

OP, I get this. You have dogs and white floors. My floors will be clean whilst the rest of the house looks like a shit heap. I wouldn't want the disgusting stuff dogs get on their feet being transferred from one room to another either via the bucket. It bewilders me that when my DH has done the kitchen floor it only takes him 10 minutes of mopping, no sweeping or hoovering first. I am guilty of asking seemingly innocent questions like 'you managed to do it all in ten minutes?' (I know I need to stop that). However, I hope you were able to get on with your day.
