To think 1 minute isn't late?

DS1 starts school at 8.50, we got there at 8.51 and were told we had to sign in at the office. AIBU to think that we weren't actually late?

Just make sure you aim to arrive 5 min earlier.

RedAndYellowStripe · 07/02/2017 13:18

There has to be a cut off point.
Their cut off point is 8.50.
You know that and know that you should plan to arrive at 8.48 to have a bit of leeway. Because anything after 8.50 will result in a close door.

No way that teachers can wait for one or two minutes more for children parents who are late. When will they stop? If they see someone arriving running, should they wait too? Or just wait for another few minutes just in case?

gandalf456 · 07/02/2017 13:20

Technically late but v petty to make you sign in. Ours don't do that til 9

NotCitrus · 07/02/2017 13:22

The register will record them as late-before-register-closed, as opposed to late for the session, so it won't affect their attendance record. Still annoying for the child having to catch up on changing or sorting themselves out.

Rainydayspending · 07/02/2017 13:23

It's not only a minute, is it? Registration/ the school start is at 8.50. Much like work, that's the get on with it time. That means being at school, coat off, bag and lunch box away and sat at desk ready. Children especially need a bit longer than adults to get into the ready to work mode.

Trifleorbust · 07/02/2017 13:23

gandalf456: But they do at 9.01? The principle is exactly the same.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/02/2017 13:24

Well if signing in.is such a pain get their earlier. Problem solved.

echt · 07/02/2017 13:24

How can you be "technically" late? You either are or you aren't.

Your children's school just has another deadline, which you apparently find OK, but undoubtedly would be not OK for those "technically " late at at 9.01.

Verbena37 · 07/02/2017 13:25

They have to have a cut off but unless a case of them locking the gate etc, then you'd have thought running in at 8:51 would be in by the skin of your teeth okay.

However, say if your watch and the school clock were in sync yesterday afternoon at pick up, then the school clock lost time over night, you would in theory not actually be late....and the one minute difference would seem ridiculous. But school won't see it like that.

I'm an early bird so would always rather get there half an hour early and sit and wait if it meant I didn't turn up late.
If you can get your child there for one minute late, then you can get them there for one minute early....unless of course there is a traffic hold up, little falls over etc.
It's swings and roundabouts......I bet the kids never come out bang on 3:30.

lalaloopyhead · 07/02/2017 13:25

Yep, late is late I am afraid - there has to be a starting point and that for you is 8.50 and 1 second.

At our school doors open at 8.35, teachers come out, kids line up, kids go in and doors close at 8.45 (I think) so normally we are there before 8.35 and I consider us to be running late if we are not. If I turned up at 8.46 then yes I would definitely consider us late and go through the front door, where I would presumably apologise, sign the book and think nothing more of it.

echt · 07/02/2017 13:27

.I bet the kids never come out bang on 3:30.

Not the same thing. It's about safeguarding.

Are all the parents there "bang" at 3.30.? Thought not.

IntoTheDeep · 07/02/2017 13:27

Our school has the system of opening doors 15 mins before the official school start time. The idea is that the children are all settled into the classrooms and ready to start immediately at the official start time. So we've got 15 mins of leeway before we're late, doors are locked, and we have to sign late books.

Although I do have one friend who regularly turns up at the time the doors are due to shut. Her child is frequently late. She said to me that it's too difficult to park if she gets there for when the doors open, it's much easier parking as the doors are about to close, and she doesn't think anyone minds if her DC are a few minutes late Hmm
I think she's probably wrong about that, given how often I see her heading in a few minutes late.

DustyBustle · 07/02/2017 13:29

You were indeed late, 8.50 is the school start time not the rock up time.

Do they not have a gates open allowed on premises at xx.xx time? I would aim to get there then if so.

BlackeyedSusan · 07/02/2017 13:29

late does not become late until the register is closed at 9:05. between 8:55 and 9:05 you are technically late but not registered late.

Verbena37 · 07/02/2017 13:31

echt safeguarding how?
As long as the teacher has them all lined up behind her/him, and doesn't let them go without a parent, then yes, in theory, they could come out bang on 3:30.

ArcheryAnnie · 07/02/2017 13:31

SockQueen I salute those students. How did the lecturer take it?

Verbena37 · 07/02/2017 13:32

And I was about to say the same as blackeyedsusan....that they aren't actually late until the register has been closed.

gandalf456 · 07/02/2017 13:32

Well sorry I think it's crazy - and no I'm rarely late before anyone starts with 'you think it's ok'. I have 2 children.and been doing school runs since 2008 and have never heard of this

chipsandpeas · 07/02/2017 13:33

Late is late If I log in at work at 9.01 I'm late no leeway

gandalf456 · 07/02/2017 13:33

Bet they don't notice when you arrive at 8.59 though

WidowTwonky · 07/02/2017 13:34

Gandalf you've never heard of having to go to school office if you're late?? Well that's probably because you've never been late. Good for you

gandalf456 · 07/02/2017 13:35

Yes good for me. Yes, as I said, veteran school runner. I know it all

gandalf456 · 07/02/2017 13:36

Our gates shut at 9. Leaves time for stragglers. Otherwise it makes it a pain for the office staff

Trifleorbust · 07/02/2017 13:38

gandalf456: What do you want, a medal for being on time? Well done. If you're not on time, though, chat are you? All together now...
