and then dump half the shit there and say 'oh i changed my mind on these actually i only want this this and this, but not ALL THIS OTHER SHIT I HAVE'
why? why did you even put that stuff in your basket then? why didn't you put it back when you decided you didnt want it?
Today someone handed me two kitkats declaring "just one of these please!"
wtf. why didn't you just pick one up then!? it's a 3 second or so walk to the till, how did you change your mind in that time? why are you giving me the kitkat you dont want?
is it just me or is this really fucking weird?
do people just walk around shops, putting things they think they might want in their basket, wait until they get to the till and then decide if they actually want any of the things they picked up??

I think if you take something like chicken out of the chiller, then don't buy it but just dump it somewhere, it is the same as stealing it, or deliberately breaking something. The shop can't sell it. So yes it is your bad. And incredibly wasteful, especially with meat when an animal now died for nothing (I am not vegetarian).

Dumping biscuits or whatever, that isn't going to go off, fine.

Foxesarefriends · 07/02/2017 08:30

I have always wondered what goes on inside people's heads who do this. I agree about dumping chicken, what a waste.

BakeOffBiscuits · 07/02/2017 08:30

I sometimes forget to put something back and only remember when I'm unlading the trolley.

Shoot me know Hmm

The point is, noone thinks "oh I'll just put that extra kitKat in, then change my mind at the checkout, to piss someone off"

Stop taking things so personally.

Trifleorbust · 07/02/2017 08:32

TheLivingAsheth: I feel a little guilty but not like I stole the chicken. Sorry!

minipie · 07/02/2017 08:40

I'm with LivingAsheth, if I change my mind I won't always return things to their exact place but I will at least put cold stuff back in a chiller cabinet. I hate food waste especially meat.

deai · 07/02/2017 08:47

Trifle- well you may as well have just stolen the chicken then? Because it would be going in the bin now that it had been left in a basket.
Honestly i dont care when its that people cant afford it, i dont care if people OFFER to take their stuff back (i say no its fine, ill do it) its the attitude of the people who just dump a load of shit at you. With the attitude of a pp who think i should be grateful that they are keeping me busy Hmm

I agree that putting stuff back is a massive job and one that so far hasn't been mechanised. When I last worked in a supermarket all the abandoned stuff went in a trolley behind the checkouts and it was a welcome change of role, touring the shop putting them back where they belonged. It sounds as if the OPs store could do with a similar system.

I often abandon a whole basket/trolley if I get to the checkouts and there are unopened tills and massive queues. From experience I know nothing motivates shop managers to employ more staff/open more checkouts than trolleys full of lost profit.

Andrewofgg · 07/02/2017 08:48

CreamPastry You are so right. The type who remembers something half way through scanning and goes back for it while a queue waits, instead of paying for what's there and going back for the missing stuff . . . string 'em up from the overhead sign saying Cereals, and sell tickets for s good view!

gamerchick · 07/02/2017 08:50

Yeah self centred, there's a word.

Keeps you in a job always makes me laugh. That's what someone said to me when I asked their kids to give me their wrappers rather than just chuck them on the ground.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/02/2017 08:50

Sometimes I realise I've got too many things to fit in my shopping bag. I'm not paying 5p, so I'll leave what doesn't fit.

Trifleorbust · 07/02/2017 08:54

I was bad Blush

pinotnoirismyjam · 07/02/2017 09:01

I used to work in a supermarket. If I change my mind and don't want something anymore, I put it back where I got it from.

myfavouritecolourispurple · 07/02/2017 09:01

I work in a supermarket and working on the selfscan is hard enough as it is - dealing with customer issues

Humpf if the machines were better designed there would not be so many issues. For example, I put something on the scale that is too light to register so have to call someone. Guy gets very cross and says well didn't you know it was too light? er -no, I expect your self-service till dept to have worked that one out! I actually do know how to work the stupid machine but I can't help it if the things are too light to register. Fortunately a greetings card will work if you slam it down hard. A protractor won't. I noticed that a recent machine in Waitrose doesn't do it by weight, it's so much better. You can actually fill your own bag while you go. The worst thing about the self -serve machines is having to put everything on the scales and then into your bag. I prefer to bag as I go, but most self-serve tills won't let you do that unless your bag is completely empty, which isn't the case if you've got other shopping/a phone/umbrella whatever in it.

But it is very rude to leave items at the checkout. For goodness sake don't be so lazy and take it back to where you found it. It is not hard.

OwlinaTree · 07/02/2017 09:01

This seems odd. Don't you then have to go back the next day, therefore spending more than 5p on petrol/busfare?

ChocolateWombat · 07/02/2017 09:02

Well, if this is the biggest stress you experience at work, you really aren't doing too badly. Think about the pressure nurses are under or the stresses care workers in the community face to get to all of their visits.

Yes, people can be a little thoughtless...which is what you describe. Perhaps they are a bit entitled and seem to think they can do whatever they want in the shop......but essentially you are there to serve them, even when it's a bit annoying. Do you know, nth at one of the features of a store such as Waitrose is fantastic customer service......so when a customer does what you describe (and they will, frequently) the staff will smile cheerily and say 'no problem' and move on. There won't be a sense of passive aggression on their part or smiling through gritted teeth. That's because they have been really well trained to understand that their customers are paying for great service.....and if they choose to dump their unwanted items on random shelves, or at your till, then they are allowed to do so and won't be made to feel bad.

It's the same in quality clothing stores - customers a never expected to put tried on items back, or to go out and get extra sizes if they need them, nor to experience huff invests if someone wants to try on 20 items and doesn't buy any.

I can see how it is annoying when people do this, but seriously it's you who is losing out if it's making you bitter......just think about bigger things and let it wash over you. It will be better for your blood pressure!

myfavouritecolourispurple · 07/02/2017 09:03

Seriously? You think your need to save 5p is so much more important that placing an unnecessary burden on sales staff? Really, we need a law in this country that makes everyone work in a shop for at least a year - and then people like you will learn what it's like to be on the other side. People might be a bit nicer and less arrogant towards sales assistants if they have been there themselves.

gamerchick · 07/02/2017 09:05

Yeah watch your blood pressure and be thankful you're not a nurse or care worker OP Grin

7SunshineSeven7 · 07/02/2017 09:09

Well, if this is the biggest stress you experience at work, you really aren't doing too badly. Think about the pressure nurses are under or the stresses care workers in the community face to get to all of their visits.

I think the difference is that patients and people in care can't help their situation. People can help retail workers not having extra work loads by doing simple things - like putting stuff back properly and not dumping it at the till.

BilboBagg1 · 07/02/2017 09:11

Just go and put it back before you serve them Halo make them wait

LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 07/02/2017 09:11

My kids have form for putting random shit in the trolley so you would love me at the checkout "mmm who put that in?!" I would never abandon meat or anything in the bog roll isle that's just laziness.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 07/02/2017 09:11

I have never encountered this phenomenon.

Confused
DianaMemorialJam · 07/02/2017 09:12

I went to sainsbos for formula in the middle of the night and I grabbed the tin without looking, accidently picked up 'comfort' milk instead of the normal one. At the till I clicked and asked if it was ok if I changed it and the lady went and got a new one for me! Very nice lady.

I love chatting to the people on the check out, i always think they must think 'oh no not this one again!' Grin

letthirstydogslie · 07/02/2017 09:13

I hung things in the wrong place last week near the tills sorry.

I got to the till and realise I had miscalculated the cost ( I had gift vouchers) and no spare money. I was trying to put a couple of my items back without dd seeing as she would have got upset that I did not have the money to get them (dd has sn and knew I had just given her money I couldn't really afford for a trip)

letthirstydogslie · 07/02/2017 09:14

It was clothes in a clothes shop Primark rather than meat if that makes me less of a twat.
