Honest opinion, am I too old for jeans with rips at the knee?

As my username suggests, I am 50. I posted a wee while ago about jeans sizings. I've just got a pair delivered from Next and they fit a treat. However, they have rips at the knees. Would I be a bit mutton dressed as lamb wearing them?

Ripped jeans sound cold. Do fluffy dice on luggage count as naff too? Grin

mambono5 · 05/02/2017 14:49

its not your age that matters, it's your size and your shape, and what you are wearing them with.

I think Felicity Kendall rocks the look, even if I would have chosen a more flattering top.

Do you like how you look in them?.

MichaelSheensNextDW · 05/02/2017 14:52

Wow @ Felicity Kendall!
In my opinion, as an old bag, I think the ripped skinnies are muttony but looser styles can work really well as Felicity shows.

ppeatfruit · 05/02/2017 14:54

They look funny 'peculiar' not ha ha. On the tube in very cold January, some of the people looked strange because they were wearing warm jackets and scarves etc. BUT they had large rips across the knees of their jeans and the flesh that was poking though was red and raw looking from the cold Shock. It was fashionable 8 years ago too wasn't it?

No it's silly but of course it's your cold kneed life. Grin

ppeatfruit · 05/02/2017 14:56

Poor Flick Kendal can't come to terms with growing old. She looks so fake.

Rachel0Greep · 05/02/2017 14:56

Slightly off topic but, I'd love if someone could tell me where I can get jeans that are not skinny! My legs and skinny jeans - that's a no Grin

OP, go for it, if you like them, I don't see why not.

ppeatfruit · 05/02/2017 14:59

IMO There is a serious side to the "I'm so rich I can look poor" look though It's a bit sick.

JaceLancs · 05/02/2017 15:00

Hate the mutton expression too
I will sometimes ask DD if she thinks something I am considering wearing looks like I'm trying too hard to recapture my youth
Not keen on ripped jeans anyway even on teenagers - I think they only suit very slender physique too

ppeatfruit · 05/02/2017 15:06

Rachel I know that M&S do a large variety of styles of jeans, the Per Una ones are quite good quality.

CancellyMcChequeface · 05/02/2017 15:08

I'm 30 and I think they look very odd on anyone. If I ripped an item of clothing and didn't want to/couldn't afford to replace it, I'd sew up the rip. Ripped jeans as a fashion seems utterly bizarre to me.

I agree that people should wear whatever they like regardless of age, but this is a trend I'm never going to understand.

Rachel0Greep · 05/02/2017 15:09

Thanks ppeatfruit, will check them out.

MiddlingMum · 05/02/2017 15:13

I think they look ghastly at any age. Unless of course you've just ripped them while doing some manual work and are on your way home to change. But just my opinion, wear them if you want Smile

Floisme · 05/02/2017 15:16

While I'm here, I also cannot stand those pre-sewn fabric badges. Choose your own and sew them on yourselves people!

dailyshite · 05/02/2017 15:52

I'm 43 and I wear them, but then I don't think your age matters in the slightest in terms of what is acceptable to wear or not wear. If you like them, wear them.

Equally if you are 18 and want to wear twinset and pearls, go for it. Nothing to do with anyone else.

dailyshite · 05/02/2017 15:57

Ppeat - I completely disagree with you. In that photo Felicity Kendall looks great, no idea how old she is (except that by a process of remembering the good life, she is probably a couple of decades older that me) but she looks completely ageless, comfortable and effortlessly good. If I looked like that I'd be chuffed.

Manijo · 05/02/2017 15:57

Not sure on this one either and know where you're coming from. Think if you keep it casual with a pair of ankle boots or flats and a plainish top you can still get away with it.

DesolateWaist · 05/02/2017 15:58

If you wore it the first time round then you are too old for it the second time round

blueskyinmarch · 05/02/2017 15:59

I am in my 50s and would never wear ripped jeans, mostly because I think my legs would get too cold! My DD (19) wears them and sometimes says her legs are cold. Just buy proper jeans ffs. Grin

Bluntness100 · 05/02/2017 16:02

Yes I think you are too old sorry. I'm 47 and I bought a pair last year , a very expensive Armani pair and They were a mistake, can't wear them out as I feel like a self conscious try hard twat in them.

My 19 year old 5foot nine size eight daughter wears them, as do all her friends and that may be what is driving me though, no one wants to be dressed like their kids.😞

DramaAlpaca · 05/02/2017 16:06

I'm in my early 50s and wouldn't buy jeans that had rips.

I don't mind wearing old pairs that have gone a bit tatty. The lived-in look kind of matches the rest of me these days Grin

But if you like them, they look good on you, make you feel confident and you think you can rock them, go for it.

Hate the 'mutton' expression though.

bertsdinner · 05/02/2017 16:09

Ive got a pair with a couple of little rips in them, I'm 48, and I think they look ok. I dont think I'd wear the very ripped/distressed ones or the ones with ripped knees though.

Floisme · 05/02/2017 16:10

Oh please. There's nothing in the shops I haven't worn the first, second or even third time around. Unless they bring back crinolines.

abigamarone · 05/02/2017 16:11

I've no time for the idea of dressing your age, but deliberately ripped jeans = naff and a little too 'try hard'. Unless they've worn out on their own. As for glittery bits and lace under the rips? Confused

KatieScarlett · 05/02/2017 16:13

I was too old for them the 1st time round. Sorry, did I say too old? I meant too cheap to buy fucked up jeans that show your blinding white goose flesh
