WIBU to put DS in the cone of shame?

2.5 yo DS grazed his chin at nursery last week. It scabbed over as usual, but he's started peeling strips of scab and skin off, and now has a large open raw patch on his face. He did it again with a tiny scratch on his cheek, so he's got two raw oozing wounds on his face and he just won't leave them alone! We put plasters on them but he pulls them off after maybe half an hour, and he's now made the chin wound so big plasters won't cover it. They both started off as really minor grazes! Anyone got any advice, short of tying his hands behind his back? It hurts when he pulls bits off and he cries, but it doesn't make him stop!

That's a nasty wound now. We've had similar with our kid so I sympathise.

No to stingy stuff - that wound is way too big and it would be memorably awful.

If it were me I'd be getting him seen by a nurse at the gp. The nursing team are usually the wound healing experts and will have all sorts of clever tricks and healing stuff to speed things up.

Scratch sleeves sound terrific. I know it's a pain dealing with the frut

...frustrated kid, but for us when things got bad like this we had to make it the main focus and priority of our days until it got better, otherwise it got steadily worse until we hit infections and antibiotics.

Things are better now kid is older, but it's still a struggle and we still pay lots of attention t preventing things getting worse from tiny scratches, using bribery to an extent that must look ridiculous to everyone else. We know the alternative is weeks of misery for all of us though.

Good luck.

I also think scratch sleeves are the answer, otherwise he'll just carry on.
You'll find ways to distract him, and it won't be for long. When it dries up you can then treat it with the said creams.
It must be very hard for you, watching him make it worse. 🌺

Id take him to the GP. He might need s steroid cream to stop the itching of healing which will be driving him made and resulting in the picking. It does look w bit infected too so maybe antibiotics

scratch sleeves can be improvised with a pair of tights worn like a bolero uf you decide to go with that idea

Ok, we have cut his nails, applied Metanium and DH located a gauze pads attached to a bandage, so he's got the bandage tied round his head and a plaster on the other cheek. He is not impressed with the bandage but I've bribed him with Petit Filous and it's staying on so far.

DH will ring the GP in the morning unless it's massively improved overnight. I'm contemplating scratch mitts made out of tights for bedtime.

I stripped his bed and it had lots of little dried up bits of bloody skin in it!

Ah, poor little chap with the nighttime picking!

Let us know how he gets on with the new regime. Hope it heals very soon.

Metanium is working well because it means you can see what he's done to it - cover the whole red bit in yellow paste, and if he scrapes at it then you spot it! But I think making him wear the bandage yesterday seems to have made him realise a bit more that he has to leave it alone. Also got him a new Lego aeroplane (built by me Grin ) which has occupied his hands nicely, what with roaring it around the house and then appearing with broken-off bits for them to be replaced. Not sure whether nursery tomorrow will be especially impressed by the concept of putting bum cream on his face, though - they're very anal rigid about signing cream in and out, which means I'll have to go out and buy a brand new tube of Metanium for them to sign in, because they won't accept a half-used tube, and they might not want to use it for non-arses.

Hope the little one is feeling much better soon.
