WIBU to put DS in the cone of shame?

2.5 yo DS grazed his chin at nursery last week. It scabbed over as usual, but he's started peeling strips of scab and skin off, and now has a large open raw patch on his face. He did it again with a tiny scratch on his cheek, so he's got two raw oozing wounds on his face and he just won't leave them alone! We put plasters on them but he pulls them off after maybe half an hour, and he's now made the chin wound so big plasters won't cover it. They both started off as really minor grazes! Anyone got any advice, short of tying his hands behind his back? It hurts when he pulls bits off and he cries, but it doesn't make him stop!

i used white sticky dressings from chemist as harder to get off then plasters. i put on a little smear of metanium it night when asleep for one not near the mouth. Then just bribery to leave them alone

DorkusDelonghi · 05/02/2017 09:58

Oh fuck, I thought he was FIVE not 2.5. Please don't show him yucky pictures. Delete! My bad. Sorry!

herecomesthsun · 05/02/2017 09:59

liquid plaster didn't work for us (DS with eczema).

Why not ask gP advice, if it is not already infected, there is significant risk. And it looks difficult to dress with bandages.

Grin at Dorkus

The germolene spray stuff REALLY stings. I use it on myself sometimes as a sort of test for how brave I'm feeling but there's no way I'd put it on my very oversensitive DDs.

DorkusDelonghi · 05/02/2017 10:03

Am still in bed. Need some Brew Blush

JustCallMeKate · 05/02/2017 10:04

Liquid plaster stings like fuck when applying it. I was screaming after putting it on a cut on my elbow. I wouldn't use it on myself again never mind a child. That sore looks raw, I'd take him to a pharmacist to see if there's anything they suggest as well as cutting his nails. I hope it heals soon as that looks really sore.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 05/02/2017 10:04

I'm a nurse, don't put cream on an open wound - only if it is dry.

It might be worth getting him to see the practice nurse at your local surgery to see if there is a dressing that would cover it, would probably only need to stay on for a day or 2 to get chance to heal up properly.

Liquid plaster hurts like hell. I've tried it on much smaller eczema related wounds and immediately had to wash it off in tears. Please don't use it on your child!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 05/02/2017 10:06

I am torn on the Germolene. Stinging now v possible infection/lifelong scar! maybe I'm just mean

Where the feck has the Metanium got to?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 05/02/2017 10:08

Girlie, I've put Metanium on raw nappy rash before and it healed over. Confused Should I not do that? I thought it was designed for raw skin?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 05/02/2017 10:08

The trouble with dressings is that he'd just peel those off too.

Nasty wound :( So hard when he keeps picking scab off
I would see GP, to rule out infection, get advice re dressing and scarring
You could clean it with normal saline (salt water solution from pharmacy) to kill bacteria and then when dry, apply clear adherent dressing such as 'tegaderm' He wont be able to easily get tegaderm off

And much bribery needed with lots of little rewards for no picking, such as 'We go to your favourite playground today if no picking' 'Well done for no picking this morning, didn't we have lovely walk/play time at park, Now,We cook one of your favourite dinners tonight if you promise no picking chin this afternoon'

TwentyChews · 05/02/2017 10:11

Safety pin mittens to t-shirt/sleeves. Apply big plaster/adhesive dressingy thing (agree with PP - pharmacist may be able to suggest best one). He will be infuriated by covered hands but my friend had to do this with her DS with severe eczema.

Poor him. And poor you. Flowers

Cherrysoup · 05/02/2017 10:15

GP. Fusidic acid (doesn't sting) would dry and heal that up quick sharp. It would also stop any itching if that's why he's picking. Mittens on string under his clothes. Looks like he's really enlarged what was originally a graze.

SquinkiesRule · 05/02/2017 10:18

My friend made her own scratch sleeves for bed. She used a pair of her Dh's long socks, and nappy pinned them to her Ds's vest then put a long sleeve pajama top on him, worked a treat.

Carollocking · 05/02/2017 10:24

Never heard of scratch sleeves however I improvised very similarly with my youngest using some of her old tights arm in one then around her back arm in next and PJ over top

shinynewusername · 05/02/2017 10:27

What Cherry says. Or Naseptin if you have it in the house (often prescribed for nose bleeds) provided he is not allergic to peanuts (it contains peanut oil).

A Compeed dressing would also be good if he will keep it on. They are designed for blisters but are really comfortable and flexible so kids sometimes tolerate them better than other dressings. You can get them at any pharmacy.

MiriAmmerman · 05/02/2017 10:31

Bandage his face up very tightly (all around over the top of his head)? Taped in lots of different places, also safety pinned? Will look melodramatic but will stop him being able to get at it during the day. You could put kittens on him at night for sleep, and the cut can then have 12 hrs of air.

ovenchips · 05/02/2017 10:31

I've used both Metanium and Lansinoh on wet wounds (cracked nipples and open skin) and they worked really well. Lansinoh works on principle of moist wound healing I believe.

FWIW from your photo I'd use Metanium at night.

Don't use the germolene new skin on a raw wound. I also don't know if you can use it on the face. Open wounds need a dressing and to be able to dry. The worst thing about something like this is when it does dry it scabs into a dry scab that itches. Son scratches the itch, picks the scab and the cycle restarts. You need a cream that prevents a dry scab similar to bepanthen or viralsooth gel but apply this once it dries a little. Once it is dry, keep applying the bepanthen or viralsooth gel to stop it becoming a dry scab.

BeBesideTheSea · 05/02/2017 10:46

Miri has it - cover him with kittens then he will be too distracted to pick his face Grin

kaelea · 05/02/2017 10:47

thinking totally outside the box, what about clear nail polish on his nails, a layer of that on my nails and the ends aren't as sharp, I couldn't pick a scab, if he tries to pick it off his nails it might take his mind off his face, long as he doesn't eat it

Happy to be shot down as talking nonsense cos I don't have any other suggestion and absolutely no clue about raising 2yr olds
