To ask if DH's shower routine is as mad as I think?

My dh is slightly obsessive about being 'green'. We recycle, compost, walk short journeys etc.

However, his greatest obsession concerns the wasting of water. To that end, when he showers, he will turn off the water while he's lathering up. He says it saves water. I say any savings are negated by the fact the shower will have to warm up again and the boiler will have to do this twice.

WIBU to suggest this is bonkers?

We have a hot water tank. Always have so far.

Not sure if maybe it is more common to build new houses with combis.

LadyIrisBarclay · 02/02/2017 21:32

I do this as our shower cubicle is quite teeny and I like to take my time, having a good scrub and an 'up and under' without the water rinsing away my carefully produced suds.

thenightsky · 02/02/2017 23:06

I've always done the switch off to lather up thing.

DH leaves the shower running for 15 mins and buys about 5 times the shower gel I do, probably because he's trying to lather up whilst the water is running and washing it off faster than he can put it on. It really pisses me off how much water he wastes.

I got the last laugh when we went to visit Africa... I got washed and rinsed properly. He ran out of water before he'd even got half lathered (bucket shower and a 2 litre limit) Grin

thenightsky · 02/02/2017 23:07

sorry... not 2 litre... it was 10 litres I think.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 02/02/2017 23:11

He'd hate my DH who showers for 20 minutes at a time both before AND after the gym. Sends me nuts but TBF he is a smelly bugger if he doesn't shower and could never go more than about 16 hours without one before smelling like a Cornish Pasty factory. He's very pretty though so makes up for it Grin

cushioncovers · 02/02/2017 23:12

I've done the switch off and lather up when staying in my parents caravan otherwise you end up using a whole barrel of water.

BitOutOfPractice · 02/02/2017 23:16

I was hoping thinking that this one would be like the husband who insisted on being blow dried all over his body for an hour after s shower. Does anyone else remember that?

Op your dh's foibles are quite tame Grin

cushioncovers · 02/02/2017 23:28

Oh yes I remember the thread about the op's dh who dried himself with a hairdryer after his shower.

thenightsky · 02/02/2017 23:31

I too remember hairdryer man. actually I think he used 2 hairdryers at the same time and took about an hour, twice a day. Wonder if he is still at it.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 02/02/2017 23:33

I do this.

I didn't realise it was odd.
The water doesn't have to heat up all over again. It's not cold in an enclosed shower. I notice the cold if I use the shower over the bath though.

MrsAHotch · 02/02/2017 23:35

How very indulgent to have a full body blow dry. MIL's sister told me how she dries her chuff with a hair dryer after every shower. I don't know why she told me this.

FurryLittleTwerp · 02/02/2017 23:46

My DH is the opposite. He runs the shower while on the loo, then turns it off.

He runs the shower while shaving, then turns it off.

He faffs about a bit.

He runs the shower then gets in & keeps it running while he gets clean.

The "running through" is so that he can step into a warm shower.

I must admit it takes a while for the hot water to come through from the HW tank, but my routine is

Go to the loo.
Turn on shower.
Clean teeth - quick 30sec clean in the morning before breakfast
Step into hot shower.

Hmm

I do this and only shower every 2nd day unless it's particularly hot. Also don't always flush away pees. We're on a meter with a small hot water tank. Every little helps.

wideboy26 · 03/02/2017 00:05

And I hope your husband uses both sides of the loo paper. For an environmentally conscientious person it's profligate to use one side only

Treetophouses · 03/02/2017 00:09

Totally normal sustainable living. Why would you want to let heated water run into the drain whilst you shampoo/lather? It's not like there's endless energy

OverTheGardenGate · 03/02/2017 00:40

I do this and my dh does this. It's normal, especially if you are on a water meter. Get your hair and body wet, then turn the water off, then soap up, then turn the water on to rinse it off.

I always do a second shampoo application on my hair, so I do a second rinse. which might seem a bit wasteful. But I use a lot less water than I would have done if I leave the water running throughout.

Water is precious. Don't waste it. Smile

I have a friend who does this. I thought she was unique.
Apparently not.
Awaiting a post from somebody who uses a styling brush.

MrsAHotch · 03/02/2017 00:50

Overthegardengate I am intrigued now if I'm honest. Maybe just the once. No barrel brush.

stolemyusername · 03/02/2017 02:33

I do this all the time. Step into shower quickly wash hair and get wet, turn off water, condition, wash, shave and then switch the water off again to rinse off.

SingingInTheRainstorm · 03/02/2017 02:46

Each to their own but I don't like being cold, so for me I like having the warm water continuous, instead of doing the hot/cold dance.

Ericaequites · 03/02/2017 05:13

It's common if you live on a boat. I do it when the well runs low, but don't care for it.

mrbob · 03/02/2017 05:30

The amount of water saved by not showering at ALL for 2 months is the amount of water it takes to produce ONE burger of meat. If he actually cares about water saving there are better ways to do it

goldopals · 03/02/2017 05:46

I have to do that. My house has an aging septic tank that cannot handle the continuing flow of water. I have to be very careful with water in this house
