to think we could all do something positive - and ask UK govt to take in a lot more Syrian refugees?

I get the rage. The fear. But behind all that it is hard to somehow focus on the story of all the Syrian refugees. On the people behind the headlines.
Couldn't we channel some of this vast emotion into campaignjng to take in far more refugees from Syria. To balance the gates being shut by Trump?

I know all the arguments that "we don't have space" etc etc but it is actually quite hard to believe that is really the case when many wealthy people have second, even third, homes.....

I can't start a petition, but maybe someone could?

But just to add, when you start a petition, your address or even area isn't made public.

findmeunafraid · 31/01/2017 23:46

I expect many people can't start petitions for similar reasons /because they are in the public eye.
This was a nice thread. Started with real compassion. And yes I am hatching a plan of all the things i can do.
Think you should all hang your heads in shame .

Tippexy · 31/01/2017 23:47

How would we pay for them? How would the NHS treat them? Where would their school places come from? Their homes? We need to look to our own first. Get all of our own children out of poverty and then we can start taking in others.

BenadrylCucumberpatch · 31/01/2017 23:47

Or is it something you think everyone else should do?
Because voicing concern for a situation, wanting to find solutions for everyone to follow while you do nothing personally, is the very definition of Virtue Signalling.

Astro55 · 31/01/2017 23:47

Think you should all hang your heads in shame

Why?

What makes you think people aren't contributing?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 31/01/2017 23:47

I would hang my head in shame if I knew why...

Ever heard of compassion fatigue OP?

WorraLiberty · 31/01/2017 23:48

Gahhh! I give up.

"You sound like a lovely person OP....yadda yadda Thanks xxxxxxxx"

There. Was that what you wanted?

Good luck with whatever you're trying to achieve. I hope it goes well.

findmeunafraid · 31/01/2017 23:49

I Have made it quite plain I am doin all I can, and already do a lot. This isn't about me, it's about us as a nation. And if we are arguing we cannot take more then we will look a bit hypocritical giving trump a ticking off

OP posts:
lokisglowstickofdestiny1 · 31/01/2017 23:49

No OP I don't have anything to be ashamed about. I do take action, I volunteer for a charity - it isn't related directly to refugees but I do my bit.

findmeunafraid · 31/01/2017 23:49

Not about contributing. About turning on me.

OP posts:
phoolani · 31/01/2017 23:50

I am so glad I don't know any MNers in real life.

lokisglowstickofdestiny1 · 31/01/2017 23:52

No one has turned on you, no one could have second guessed why you couldn't start a petition. You are asking people to do something, plenty of people are doing things. Anyway I'm off to bed!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 31/01/2017 23:53

But can't you see what people are saying? You aren't in a position to do anything but you expect, for example, people with second homes to just let anyone live in them (presumably with no rent or references).

You sound like one of those people who thinks all the money in the world should be divided equally

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 31/01/2017 23:55

You don't get to tell people what to care about or that they should do something. Like pp said it is virtue signalling at its worst.

There are close on 5 million Syrian refugees of which 10,000 went to the US under Obama, and 5000 to the UK

How many would you like to take in the UK?

Approximate numbers please.

findmeunafraid · 31/01/2017 23:58

PeOpel who know nothing about me yet turn on me.

I'm actually well known I the charity field because of the huge amount of voluntary work I do, and always have done. But this thread wasn't meant be about me. It was meant to be about us, as a nation. that we can't just, as a nation, wring our hands about Trump if we aren't prepared to do things too

Really really disappointed in you lot.

Thanks dj. You get it.

OP posts:
phoolani · 31/01/2017 23:58

To ask people if they think they should care more about something is virtue signalling?
No, it isn't. If op wanted to virtue signal, she'd have said, I'm doing this, aren't I great. This is kind of the opposite of virtue signalling.

findmeunafraid · 31/01/2017 23:59

Fucks sake rose .

OP posts:
phoolani · 01/02/2017 00:00

Approximate numbers? Oh, I'd advocate at least 4 million, but then I'm part of the London liberal elite, so my vote counts for shit.

WayfaringStranger · 01/02/2017 00:00

I think you have an overly simplistic view of a very complex situation. A petition will achieve nothing. It's not just about giving second or third homes Hmm to Syrian refugees. It's not about the physical space. We need to be able to provide and fund the adequate resources; health and social care, education and employment. Sadly, we cannot support every refugee in the world.

findmeunafraid · 01/02/2017 00:01

That doesn't mean we shouldn't Support some though wandering. Your logic is flawed.

OP posts:
WayfaringStranger · 01/02/2017 00:02

We are supporting some people though. Confused

findmeunafraid · 01/02/2017 00:02

And I am suggesting we support some more Hmm

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 01/02/2017 00:03

You are the only one handwringing on this thread OP.

And 'being disappointed' is something that parents say to errant children.

Do something if you can, just don't expect everyone to care about the same issues.
