To ask what contraception you use??

I like the simplicity of the idea of the pill but having tries microgynon 30 have had nothing but problems with it. It made me continuously nauseous, headaches and irregular cramping.
Have previously had the implant with similar issues and the merina coil which moved and caused awful pain.
It seems I struggle with most, is there an alternative pill brand I should ask for?
Average weight, good blood pressure no family history or heart issues etc.

Condoms for a year then a planned pregnancy then condoms again for 6 months now. Thinking about going back on the pill... once we've completed our family I think I may ask dh to have a vasectomy.

Borntoflyinfirst · 31/01/2017 12:38

I currently have a copper coil. It's been in for 6 1/2 years (is a 10 year one). I've had no increase in bleeding or period pain.

Before children I was on various pills for years with no issues but after child 2 just couldn't find one that suited me - one made me sick, one bleed constantly etc etc. So non hormonal was my only choice and it's been fine for me.

QuinionsRainbow · 31/01/2017 13:54

I'm with Anothermoomin - as was DH once the job was done!

wettunwindee · 31/01/2017 14:01

Vasectomy? Really? Do you know the details?

Dh had the snip Grin

@user892 - that sounds a lot like 'pulling out'...

wettunwindee · 31/01/2017 14:03

Excuse the brain fart above!

It's been a long week...

user892 · 31/01/2017 14:06

that sounds a lot like 'pulling out'

It's not the withdrawal method. Info below. GPs and family planning centres used to teach it years ago, when they had the time / funds:-

Allthewaves · 31/01/2017 14:09

Never got on with microgynon. Was on Marvelon for years. Now have copper coil as I wanted my sex drive back, I'm way more emotional without the pill but feel more me. Heavy periods are pain, but got a cup so it's not too bad.

wettunwindee · 31/01/2017 14:09

I'll be honest user, no way I'm following the link.

Call me immature but as soon as I hear the c word (c*ix), mucus etc, my mind wanders to a safe place...

TheseAreTheGoodOldDays · 31/01/2017 14:11

@Belle89 do you have a walk-in that you could go to? My local sexual health clinic does a walk in slot a couple of times a week so you can just go and wait to be seen.
Can be a pain waiting an hour or two, but just a thought, if you don't want to wait another few weeks to come off the pill you're on now Smile

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 31/01/2017 14:11

Another copper coil lover here! I had mine put in about 3 months ago as emergency contraception Blush but I was going to get one anyway. It was mildy uncomfortable to put in but no worse than a smear test. My periods were light and short before and though they have increased in length and heaviness, they've probably only come up to "normal" level, if that makes sense? And that may well settle down after a few months anyway.

It's brilliant! I don't have to think about it and it can stay there for 10 years which might see me through to menopause.

user892 · 31/01/2017 14:12

wet Don't then, each to their own. You're the one who was choosing to comment on my informed choice Grin

OlennasWimple · 31/01/2017 14:14

DH had the snip - best thing ever!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 31/01/2017 14:15

I never got on with the pill until a gp suggested logynon. The amount of hormone in it varies through the month. It may be worth a try.

user892 · 31/01/2017 14:16

as soon as I hear the c word (c*ix), mucus etc, my mind wanders to a safe place...

But no, heaven forfend you should hear about someone choosing to educate themselves about their own fertility by being aware of their cervix and cervical secretions, and you don't pick them up on it Hmm

Why haven't you said similar to the ones who said they have coils? Can you bear the thought of a nice clean doctor or nurse inserting a coil into a cervix, better than the idea of a woman checking herself?

BigSandyBalls2015 · 31/01/2017 14:20

Haven't used any contraception for years. Did used to use the 'withdrawal' method, now I'm almost 50 we don't even bother with that. Figured it would be very very difficult to get pregnant ..... however, suddenly went from very regular periods to a 3 month gap which freaked me out, couldn't cope with a newborn and teens. Thankfully period started last week, so it's prob the start of the menopause.

StillRabbit · 31/01/2017 14:20

Condoms. Youngest DC is nearly 14 and have used condoms since then. They're not perfect but they suit us.

wettunwindee · 31/01/2017 14:24

My comment came across completely wrongly. Sorry.

Your methods don't strike me as especially scientific and no, I'm not going to read about it. There's clearly some luck involved.

cervical secretions - is there a recognised phobia for shuddering slightly at biological names when related to genitals?

I've had the coil in the past. As long as no one described to me in any detail what they were doing, I was fine. I had the implant and looked away from the Dr the entire time there was something sharp around. Sometimes it's better not to know.

As I said, I certainly didn't mean to sound like I was having a go at you. My issues are my own Smile

allfurcoatnoknickers · 31/01/2017 14:31

I had horrible problems with microgynon 30. Specifically acne and sudden, uncontrollable weight gain. I switched to Yasmin 10 years ago and haven't had any issues since.

user892 · 31/01/2017 14:35

Apology accepted wettunwindee - it seemed like you were calling my informed choices unreliable and disgusting.

It's perfectly scientific and 99% reliable if done properly. If done improperly it's only 75% effective, so it requires a great deal of commitment, record-keeping and awareness of your own body.

It's best for me - nothing is 100% effective, and you could argue that everything involves an element of 'luck'...

Male condoms are 98%, the POP is 99%. Even sterilised women have a 1 in 200 lifetime chance of pregnancy.

teaandakitkat · 31/01/2017 14:38

Depo. Having tried and not really got on with anything else.
Pill did me for years but then wanted something a bit longer lasting. Copper coil was fine but gave me really heavy periods. Only for a few days a month, and pretty predictable, but still a nuisance. Had that removed to ttc.
After baby I had a merina coil. Hate it. Irregular spotting, sometimes fairly heavy (but nothing like the copper coil), general moodiness and just not feeling like myself.
I don't mind the depo, I do think I've put on a bit of weight, but nothing I couldn't shift if I cared enough. I don't think it's affected my moods that much, not like the merina coil did for sure. I have to go to the GP nurse every three months but the last time I went she said they are considering letting long term users self administer if that's your thing? Don't know if I'd fancy that myself....

frazzled3ds · 31/01/2017 14:44

Copper coil. Years ago was on combined pill, worked a treat, then had a query over blood clotting after DS1 birth, plus family history of DVT suggested combined pill wasn't a great idea. Mini pill was next, fine to begin with but then ended up bleeding pretty much constantly. Tried Mirena, again fine to begin with but then same again, and moody to boot. Anything hormone based doesn't work for me. I do have pretty heavy periods though which is the only downside, and not everyone gets that. I do get a bit moody still, but less dramatic than when using Mirena.

TheWayYouLookTonight · 31/01/2017 14:52

Cerelle mini pill (before that Cerazette but then pharmacy couldn't get hold of Cerezette any more) - no issues with it.

Previously had nexplanon implant, - again no problems

with both the implant and mini pill I still got periods (though more like every 8 weeks), I wasn't one of the lucky ones whose periods went away!

Before those I had various combined pills, but then I started getting migraines with visual disturbances so was told I couldn't have them any more.

Sallygoroundthemoon · 31/01/2017 15:06

Does anyone use the cap? I can't take hormones and won't have a coil so it's looking a good option as condoms irritate me but doesn't seem very common these days.

Mol1628 · 31/01/2017 15:11

I have nexplanon. No complaints apart from unpredictable long periods sometimes but they only come once every few months so better than having regular painful periods every month.

kitXi · 31/01/2017 15:15

Condoms until my husband has his vasectomy.
