Or at least consider it. My friend was forever moaning about her MIL (hip) op being canx and saying it wasnt fair and complaining about the NHS. I know the MIL has 4 children all comfortably off - not rich by any means. It did make me think why don't you all club together and go private. If you've got the means then why not?

If she's paid into the system through NI and tax then why not?

Well the NHS could save approx. £300million per year if people just turned up for the GP appointments they'd booked. Or phoned in advance to cancel the appointments so other people could use them instead.
Then there is the £80million per year spent prescribing paracetamol - it costs the NHS over £3 to prescribe a packet of paracetamol compared to about 30p to buy it over the counter.

I do think there's merit in refusing to prescribe otc medicines for adults. And promoting generic medicine in general.
Somebody posted "those who have paid in through their working contributions get priority over those who can work, but have not paid in."
How would you even begin to police that one?
We have an NHS that has shown its success in hugely improved outcomes. We now see the result of people living longer. We've had 70 years to think about it but the slicing up of governments into short term power means it chops and changes with the policy of each ideology.
Someone on another thread suggested it should be removed from political control and I think that's the way forward. It needs long term planning and strategy. A non profit organisation.

What is it this week with weird moralistic injunctions to overpay (see student loan/SAHM thread) for things?

And also for people insisting the things they benefit from aren't part of the fabulous welfare state? (See Widowed Parents Allowance thread).

Bonkers.

Lets fucking start by making landlords who make tenants ill pay for what it costs the NHS!
