To think I'm overweight (refused access to an NHS funded diet program + pic included)

I used to be a svelte size 10. Put on weight after having my Son. My main issue is my stomach. It sticks out. I think this is because I have a small waist so the fat has a smaller area to cover (if that makes sense). In the morning it can look pretty flat but by the evening after I've eaten a meal it does stick out in tight clothes.

Anyway, I don't know what I weigh. But I have always considered myself considerably overweight. At least two stone overweight. I am 5ft7 and should be no more than 11 stone and around 10stone to me a very healthy weight. I suspect I'm about 13 stone. People do often tell me I am fine the way I am but my parents tell me I need to lose two stone.

Anyway, signed up for an NHS funded diet programme. I arrive and they tell me my BMI is not high enough to qualify. You have to be at least two stone overweight. But I am sure I am I said. They didn't even weigh me and said I was too slim to join.

I've just signed up to slimming world but I'm really annoyed. I know I should be flattered but I really wanted to go on the course and do genuinely think I'm overweight by around two stone and should have been allowed participate. I have struggled to lose the baby weight but I know I have to make an effort. AIBU?

Sorry for the poor quality of pics. I'm not in my own home and took them just now. They're not designed to be in any way flattering. I want genuine opinions and I'm ready for them!

And THIS is why the NHS is on its arse...

MorrisZapp · 27/01/2017 19:08

Don't waste 50p on boots weighing scales.

Come to Edinburgh and weigh yourself in the mammal hall at the museum, it's free.

I'm currently a orang utan and DS is an emperor penguin. Whether the NHS accepts these stats as proof of fatness I can't say.

wibblywobblywoo · 27/01/2017 19:09

What a strange post.... Slimming World is great and it will give you the group support you say want. And they'll weigh you. So, not really any sort of problem, issue, drama..... just go to SW and lose the weight you want to lose. End of.

And to anyone else who wants to lose weight and has considered SW go for it. I have done it and it is not only a really good way to lose weight it also gives you a way of looking at food and your diet in general for ever so that you can keep the weight off once you've lost it which IMO is one of the hardest things to achieve.

Morris that made me Grin

The criteria may state that BMI only needs to be over 25, but that would probably only apply in extreme circumstance e.g. if being overweight is already causing other health problems. Considering how many people in the UK are now overweight or obese, it should be obvious that the NHS can't possibly afford to fund weight loss programs for them all, without seriously compromising the treatment of people who are actually sick and injured.

I am so going there!

Mrsglitterfairy · 27/01/2017 19:13

Oh Jesus, get over yourself. This is why the NHS is on its arse..
as you say It's only a group similar to slimming world. just join slimming world, pay your fiver a week and do it that way.

Klaphat · 27/01/2017 19:13

Yes you are overweight. Ignoring the belly, you have excess fat on your arms. That isn't to say you would qualify for NHS interventions though. There is a lot you can do. From skimming the thread, it sounds like a bit more exercise and some serious portion control would be the way to go. And maybe some efforts to get absorbed in something that isn't boredom snacking.

Quartz2208 · 27/01/2017 19:15

Why just not join slimming world or weight watchers and maybe an exercise class or two like most people do.

Why on earth would you feel that you are a candidate for the NHS rather than Self funding

Your posture is awful, you're slouched and sticking your stomach out to make it look bigger

Do you actually know how much 2 stones in weight is? It's loads! Don't be so bloody daft!

WankersHacksandThieves · 27/01/2017 19:17

FFS there are people being denied hip and knee replacements due to lack of cash and you want to take resources when you could either pay for it yourself or just eat less and move more.

Turbinaria · 27/01/2017 19:17

This is what you can do for yourself:

  1. keep a very honest food diary for a week and see where the food problem areas are
  2. Wear a pedometer and see how often you achieve 10000 steps daily
  3. download My FitnessPal and see what your daily calorie is HTH
Zanymummy · 27/01/2017 19:18

Hubby uses the scales at boots they are good it gives you weight, body fat percentage and BMI. use it once a week in conjunction with healthy eating to monitor where you are going weight wise.

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 27/01/2017 19:18

Can we arrange a mumsnet trip to MorrisZapps museum?
I'm desperate to know my animal weight

TheRippedOutPage · 27/01/2017 19:18

Sorry but all these people saying the NHS places should be kept for people that need it - why can't obese people eat less and move more?? Nobody should get NHS funded treatment to lose weight. It's a joke.

Strongmummy · 27/01/2017 19:19

Go to boots, weigh yourself on their special machine which gives you weight, bmi, fat %, look at the results. Then adjust your diet and exercise accordingly to get within the desired range. You look slightly overweight and a bit out of shape, but why on earth would you expect the overstretched NHS to take you on when they have more serious cases. YABU, selfish and bloody lazy!!!

WankersHacksandThieves · 27/01/2017 19:20

I sometimes think that people believe that the government/nhs have some money tree that they use rather than a finite budget based on tax income from people who work.

Next thing will be people wanting a district nurse to come round and wipe their arse for them just like mummy used to do... Hmm

Kirriemuir · 27/01/2017 19:20

Fuck sake. Some people have a weird idea. Who posted about her needing to lose 3 stone. She does not. I think she has a blinkered image of what she does look like bit telling someone to lose 3 stone when she is around 11-11.5 is beyond stupid.

Emmageddon · 27/01/2017 19:21

Tidy your bedroom, that'll use some calories up.

My thoughts exactly, on studying the photos of the 'overweight' OP Grin

Always check the background of photos before uploading.

But back on topic, you're not fat, and if you're less than 7lbs over your ideal weight, Slimming World won't take you on, either. You just need to improve your posture and do some toning exercises. Two stone overweight my arse.

actually my arse probably is two stone overweight all by itself

Treeroot · 27/01/2017 19:22

Have you checked your stomach to see if you have diastasis recti (separated stomach muscles)? That could be the reason why your stomach is sticking out. Google it, there's lots of information out there on how to test yourself for it and exercises and adjustments you can do to close it.

picklemepopcorn · 27/01/2017 19:24

If your tummy is flat in the morning and sticking out more as the day goes on, you may want to think about food intolerances. Try eating less wheat (pasta and bread).

TrippyMcTrapFace · 27/01/2017 19:24

I'd like to see a link to this NHS funded diet programme that doesn't require a GP to have weighed or at least checked the BMI of the patient before they can sign up for it.

ChocChocPorridge · 27/01/2017 19:30

Oh God, Morris - you should have warned us... I have a cough, and now a coughing fit at the thought of being weighed and measured as a penguin or orangutan.......

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 27/01/2017 19:32

Ok, how old are you then? And while we're at it, how old is your baby?
