To think I'm overweight (refused access to an NHS funded diet program + pic included)

user1485442361 · 27/01/2017 17:56

I used to be a svelte size 10. Put on weight after having my Son. My main issue is my stomach. It sticks out. I think this is because I have a small waist so the fat has a smaller area to cover (if that makes sense). In the morning it can look pretty flat but by the evening after I've eaten a meal it does stick out in tight clothes.

Anyway, I don't know what I weigh. But I have always considered myself considerably overweight. At least two stone overweight. I am 5ft7 and should be no more than 11 stone and around 10stone to me a very healthy weight. I suspect I'm about 13 stone. People do often tell me I am fine the way I am but my parents tell me I need to lose two stone.

Anyway, signed up for an NHS funded diet programme. I arrive and they tell me my BMI is not high enough to qualify. You have to be at least two stone overweight. But I am sure I am I said. They didn't even weigh me and said I was too slim to join.

I've just signed up to slimming world but I'm really annoyed. I know I should be flattered but I really wanted to go on the course and do genuinely think I'm overweight by around two stone and should have been allowed participate. I have struggled to lose the baby weight but I know I have to make an effort. AIBU?

Sorry for the poor quality of pics. I'm not in my own home and took them just now. They're not designed to be in any way flattering. I want genuine opinions and I'm ready for them!

"you are not slim and toned so therefore you are not a healthy weight"

Im not toned because i have some loose skin after losing ten stone and also have lipoedema on my legs which is hereditary Doesnt mean im not healthy.

To say that someone is not healthy because they arent toned is at best , straight out of Grazia and at worst incredibly ignorant.

HelenaDove · 27/01/2017 21:23

OP i suspect that you are talking about a help group for very overweight people called More Life. You are not very overweight so dont qualify.

OverTheGardenGate · 27/01/2017 21:25

As you all say, how can I say I'm overweight without knwing my weight. Same goes for them. If they wouldn't weigh me. Surely they can't safely say I am not overweight

They've got eyes in their heads. You are not one of their typical clients.
And you'd make all the other people in the class feel more shit than they already do.

Backt0Black · 27/01/2017 21:25

FGS OP. You wanted something for free, you've been told you don't qualify.

what is with the something for nothing sense of entitlement? you know what you NEED to do if you WANT to lose weight - be it 1 stone or 100 stone. But given you haven't even weighed yourself I suggest you lack the commitment to do it.

Bluntness100 · 27/01/2017 21:25

Looks like the op backed out the thread, weighed I'd assume and fine?

HelenaDove · 27/01/2017 21:26

I did my weight loss at Slimming World btw. I didnt inquire about NHS help.

5OBalesofHay · 27/01/2017 21:31

You do know that you can diet, go to classes and the gym without anyones permission?

formerbabe · 27/01/2017 21:31

I have a couple of stone to lose. It genuinely wouldn't even occur to me to approach the NHS for help.

HelenaDove · 27/01/2017 21:39

I hadnt even heard of ML until several years ago. There was a group meeting at a local hospital when i was there for something else.

They likely didnt exist when i first started at SW back in 2002.

GabsAlot · 27/01/2017 21:55

i have to laugh

aibu to go to nhs for help

whole thread yes

op-no im not how dare u!

weight yourself op its not hard and try and do something about it like stomach exercises

can u imagine all the obese people sitting in the group and u walk in asking for help-that will make them feel great

mummysherlock · 27/01/2017 21:56

I work for a council run leisure centre. Alongside standard gym/swimming memberships there is an exercise referral scheme where people with various health issues can be referred by their GP or other healthcare professional and get subsidised membership for a year. In order to qualify for a weight loss referral, a clients BMI has to be 30 or higher, so in the obese category.
OP I imagine the NHS funded diet programme you have tried to access has similar criteria.
You say you don't know your weight or BMI and I haven't seen the photos so I can't comment on your weight status, so the first step would be to find out how much you weigh and calculate your BMI. If you have joined slimming world you will probably be weighed at your first meeting. If your BMI is between 25 and 29 this will put you in the overweight category but you would most likely be expected to loose weight without funded programmes, eg by joining slimming world as you have done and becoming more active.
Bottom line is the NHS is cash strapped and needs to prioritise those most in need

3luckystars · 28/01/2017 00:59

Nawful smell of bull around here

FeralBeryl · 28/01/2017 02:05

Yep 3lucky
What did you want OP?

I can't see your pics as they've been removed in case your mum sees them but why the hell did you say you are slouching to take the pic? That will give anyone a pot belly Hmm

Did you want us all to say, 'why yes, you're huge! That wicked NHS denying you a free slimming club'
When you can:
A) afford to join slimming world
B) cannot manage the responsibility of even weighing yourself before you decide you're overweight.
C) would be taking the place of someone who really does need that support.
D) are displaying yet another fucking entitled attitude towards the floundering NHS needing to 'fix this' when people are having cancer treatments removed, waiting lists increase, fertility treatments are difficult to access.

You are obviously computer literate, there is a lot of information for those needing to lose a stone or so out there. Leave these places for the people genuinely struggling and wanting to desperately make a change.

Littleballerina · 28/01/2017 02:47

Op, I wonder if they turned you away because they were concerned about your ideas on body image?
You seem to feel like the NHS owes you because you worked for them? I work for them too but I owe them. I have 3 gorgeous children and an nhs funded education not to mention a range of treatments if/when I need them.

DianaT1969 · 28/01/2017 04:26

You could eat a ton of food over the next few weeks to ensure you qualify for the next course they run. Problem solved. That'll show the NHS for turning you away. [Lighthearted]
Nice to have a thread which is bordering on ludicrous.

angeldelightedme · 28/01/2017 04:46

Blatant fishing for compliments!

Fallonjamie · 28/01/2017 05:54

We're losing the NHS for a number of reasons.

A contributing factor is that for years some people have had the attitude that even though they could sort something out for themselves/pay a few quid (or even pence sometimes!) for something they need or want; they won't because 'why should I? That's what the NHS is for!'.

This is a good example.

GizmoFrisby · 28/01/2017 07:01

YABU weigh yourself at boots or even at your gp practice we have weighing scales. You sound totally lazy.

Katy07 · 28/01/2017 10:51

Don't waste 50p on boots weighing scales.
Come to Edinburgh and weigh yourself in the mammal hall at the museum, it's free.
I'm currently a orang utan and DS is an emperor penguin. Whether the NHS accepts these stats as proof of fatness I can't say.

Grin Fabulous - I've just burnt a few calories laughing at this!

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 28/01/2017 11:15

I think your frame is the issue. If you are large frame (big feet, wide hips and shoulders) you'll look slim at around 10.5 or 11 stone. You'll be top range of BMI but look slim. If you're a small frame as you probably look overweight at that weight even though still I'm normal BMI. The NHS won't fund people in the normal range or slightly overweight even if higher BMI than ideal due to frame. I think Slimming world will help you as it focuses you on diet and excercise which is what you need.

Let us know what you weigh when you find out Smile

It's been like that since day one though (i.e. 1948). If anything, in recent years, many people have become resigned to the fact that they can't get things on the NHS however ill they are.

megletthesecond · 28/01/2017 11:28

What mambo and rain said. We've lost the ability to judge a slim body. And 12/14 can be slim, but not if you buy from shops with extreme vanity sizing.

OP - try pilates. Look into the diastis recti info just in case. Register and walk parkrun for a while. Try out a couple of healthier meals / winter salads then see how your body and weight feels.

GabsAlot · 28/01/2017 11:52

i actually want to be a penguin

but im sure id be a hippo

HappyFlappy · 28/01/2017 14:12

I think, too, that if OP isn't prepared to invest her own time and money in her weight loss, then she won't lose weight even if the NHS subsidised herder a year's worth of Slimming World!

What we don't pay for, we rarely value - if its costing us money then we are determined to get our money's worth. Psychologically speaking it is as simple as that a lot of the time.

If she was really determined to lose weight, she would already have begun a diet and exercise programme (not easy with a little one, I know, but possible) and would be asking advice on how to prepare nutritious low-calorie meals, nit wanting us all to agree with her so that she can go the whoever and say "There! T'internet agrees I am grossly overweight! Give me my free stuff!"

HappyFlappy · 28/01/2017 14:19

See you down at the wallow, Gabsalot. Last one into the mud is a rotten egg! Grin
