Insulted over a tin off beans in supermarket

Ahhh in Aldi this morning the queues half way up the isle I'm third in line and standing there minding my own business. When a lady barges past the people behind me and says " I'm just going in front off you because I have only this (points to a can of beans) " i said " no sorry you are not pushing in front off me or anyone else we all have places to be you will have to line up like everyone else" well that didn't go down too well she started shouting that she had a job to go to and if she didn't get out the shop in 3 minutes she would miss her bus blah blah blah I'm disrespectful and she thinks I need a personality transplant & liposuction!! Before I had the chance to say anything she was escorted away from the tills by the security guard and a member off staff to see what the problem was. During that time I had paid for my shopping. Was outside the store waiting for the bus and see her get into a car and drive off. I thought eh she made this big scene over a tin off beans and a late bus but yet left the store with no beans and drove off ?!! Got home told my friend and she said I was out off order for not letting her go before me! Was I in the wrong?

She was rude, but the etiquette in Aldi is to let people with only a few items to the front of the queue. Having sad that, with the amount of shopping you had, I think that you were reasonable.

There is a lovely looking, white haired, lady in our local Lidl who always wafts around the front of the queue, with a single item in her hand. She never asks to go first but just stands there, charmingly.

The second anyone offers to let her go in front, the rest of her shopping, hitherto hidden in the handbag on her arm, is slammed down on the belt. She even cackles a bit.

She's fantastic to watch.

Sounds like she REALLY needed to eat those beans and let some farts out as the crap was really rising within her and coming out her mouth! Grin

I'd have taken the tin out of her hand and smacked across the beak with it...... Well, I wouldn't. I'd have daydreamed about doing it, though.

I am in awe of people like you OP - standing up for what is right and calling out rudeness. I am a weed. I would like to be you in my next life.

Who goes in for a can of beans at the risk of being late for work anyhow?

Yes, I was thinking this too. What an absolute loon. I refuse to believe that one moment in her day when she was late for her bus was the only opportunity she will have to buy a single tin of beans.

Why pick someone up on a simple grammatical error? Oh, you're a proofreader, glad you got that one in. Pleased to see you're qualified to be mean!

YANBU. As a rule I invite anyone who has one or two items to go ahead of me. Im afraid I've done that even if there were other people in the queue behind them. It wouldn't have crossed my mind that person would object as they'd have been in front of them anyway. I have on one occasion asked to go ahead of someone. I needed some glacé cherries for ds2 cookery class the next morning and I was cutting it fine to get to the bus station to collect dc. It was pissing down and they'd have been standing in the rain. Lady in front said ok and I was very grateful.
If someone had presumed then I'd have made them wait.

I believe the word is 'entitled' ahem.
People who push in have a special place reserved in Hell.
Disclaimer- I would let anyone in front of me if they said they were ill, couldn't queue for a physical reason etc. The key part is 'asking' not demanding.

I think she needs to check on the meaning of the word "disrespectful".

I often let folks though in front of me if they have a couple of things and I have a trolley load,....more often than not it gives me time to finish unloading and to shake out the bags

Mind you if someone come bustling up to the till clutching their goods, craning their neck, making pointed "I am in SUUUUCHHH a hurry" gestures, hopping about and huffing, juggling their items in the hope you will let them go ahead, and all whilst not even having the manners to make eye contact then they can gtf!

AND I WILL engage the checkout assistant in conversation and take my time to pack and pay!

That's right, eurochick, at Waitrose, the woman would be pushing in with a packet of Nocellara & Leccino olives, not a scummy tin of beans. Grin

And, no, I didn't make that up: www.waitrose.com/shop/DisplayProductFlyout?productId=347870

Ahhh, in Waitrose this morning and the queue's half way up the aisle. I'm third in line and standing there minding my own business, a lady politely approaches me and says "Terribly sorry my dear, but would you mind awfully if I nip in front of you? I have only this" (points to a tub of organic hummus), I said, "why of course, please, go ahead". She quickly paid, thanked me graciously, and we all went on with our days.

dollydaydream114 "I refuse to believe that one moment in her day when she was late for her bus was the only opportunity she will have to buy a single tin of beans."

She lied about the bus, because the OP saw her drive away. The OP, however, did have a bus to catch.

I dislike people who think they have some sort of divine right to push in front of others. I offer sometimes if someone only has a few items, and others have done the same with me but assuming isn't on.

She was out of order on every level.

She was out of order.

And probably if she had been polite ("Excuse me, would you mind . . .") you would have let her go in front of you.

She deserved to be escorted off thepremises and locked up for the rest of her misbegotten life

Reminds me of a story about my mum who is 85 and a bit unsteady on her feet.
Just before Christmas we were in Home Bargains (or something similar) there was a massive queue which I joined at the back.

She pottered off looking at things on the shelves, picking things up and putting them down until she got to the front. She shouted me at the back to pay! I was horrified and shouted back that she had pushed in..... She said that she hadnt - everyone was laughing

I'm impressed (or not) that you have Security in your Aldi store.

DH witnessed a woman being incredibly rude to the cashier in our local Lidl a week ago for no reason at all. Firstly, she was holding up the queue by asking stupid questions and challenging every answer she was given in a confrontational manner, but the cashier remained polite at all times. She had plonked her basket complete with contents on the conveyor belt instead of emptying it out. When she got to the till the cashier politely asked her if she would mind putting the basket on the pile by the packing table, to which she replied "No, that's what you're paid for". DH stood there open mouthed in disbelief that anyone could be that rude.
