Insulted over a tin off beans in supermarket

Ahhh in Aldi this morning the queues half way up the isle I'm third in line and standing there minding my own business. When a lady barges past the people behind me and says " I'm just going in front off you because I have only this (points to a can of beans) " i said " no sorry you are not pushing in front off me or anyone else we all have places to be you will have to line up like everyone else" well that didn't go down too well she started shouting that she had a job to go to and if she didn't get out the shop in 3 minutes she would miss her bus blah blah blah I'm disrespectful and she thinks I need a personality transplant & liposuction!! Before I had the chance to say anything she was escorted away from the tills by the security guard and a member off staff to see what the problem was. During that time I had paid for my shopping. Was outside the store waiting for the bus and see her get into a car and drive off. I thought eh she made this big scene over a tin off beans and a late bus but yet left the store with no beans and drove off ?!! Got home told my friend and she said I was out off order for not letting her go before me! Was I in the wrong?

Ah. Yeah, people round here are rarely kind or considerate so that might explain why I've never seen it!

I'm another long-term Aldi shopper who has never before seen this "Aldi etiquette" of looking out for basket-holders to let them go in front, btw.

Well IME it's not Aldi etiquette, but something I, and obviously others, automatically do when in a queue at any supermarket till, which is glance round to see if the person behind me just has a few items when I have a lot. So, it's not so much "Aldi etiquette" as basic kindness and consideration ( and sheer bloody loveliness Wink), particularly when not in a hurry i.e. no bus to catch or appointment/work to get to trundles off to polish halo

Obviously she was unreasonable and OP WNBU.

However, she also sounds as though she probably had an unusual grasp of reality, and its a bit depressing to see that the other posts acknowledging this (?) are all gleefully shouting "nutjob!", "loon" etc. Hmm

Wait. There's etiquette? I shop in Aldi and usually only have some bread. Nobody ever lets me go first, with my four loaves. Envy

Done you for sticking to your convictions and not letting people walk all over you!

elf check out

Is this only in supermarkets that don't have marsupials staffing the tills Starlight?

I'm torn now between elf and wombat checkouts . . . Hmm

chipsanndchilli Aldi/Lidl operate differently to other 'Big 4' so self-service tills wouldn't work as the cashiers need to meet targets per hour otherwise they're penalised for their 'slowness'

Oh God this drives me mad. I once had a woman in Aldi just lean over my shoulder and stay there - breathing. Not saying a word just literally looming. Then she silently shook her basket. No way I was letting the creepy fucker in front of me after that. Like op I only had a basket full myself.

Two words: self entitlement.

No OP you weren't in the wrong, she was. If someone behind me has less items than me, then I let them go in front unless I've already started unloading my items onto the conveyor belt.

ive been both sides of this dilemma in lidl i had bought a shopping trolley full of food got to theconveyor and realised i had forgotten icing sugar for a cheesecake i was going to make, so put my huge shop through sent OH off with the food to the car went and got my icing sugar and qued up again behind two ladies with a trolley full, didnt say a word and luckily the lady spotted my lonely little box of icing sugar and let me go through, i said thank you lots it was nice of her,

on the other hand in aldi il let one lady with a couple of things go in front of me then two old dears with about twenty items thought i had let them through and just barged in and started putting thier stuff on the conveyor gave me a smile and said you didnt mind did you i gritted my teeth and said no but inside i thought cheeky mares they took advantage

I never ask to queue jump and always refuse people who ask at Aldi, they are just so fast at scanning things through no one has to wait that long.

Once I refused someone who had asked, and he had one thing in his hand. After I'd paid he was served, and it turned out he was bringing something back for a refund. The cheek. Took them ages to process it.

I mostly shop in Aldi but also Morrison's previous poster is right about it happening less in big supermarkets due to express tills and elf check out...However I do think Aldi have upped their game..When I started shopping in Aldi they didn't have baskets only trolleys which was a nightmare if I was with DS in pushchair ..It meant I could only buy what fit on hood of pushchair. They now are always opening and closing checkouts depending on queue size.. I don't know about Aldi etiquette ..I don't let rude people push in even if they have one item.

There's a place in the hottest part of hell reserved for the types who get a few items scanned and then remember something they have forgotten and keep the queue waiting while they get it. No matter how busy you are, pay for what you've got then go back and queue and pay again.

Report
MPerspective · 26/01/2017 15:13

You were not wrong.

Did she ask you politely if you could jump in front of you? No. If she did, would you have let her? Probably yes. Or maybe no - it's up to you and your right. The fact she did not recognise that shows she is selfish, spoilt and impertinent.

i shop in Aldi every week and always have quite a bit then end up at the till with someone with 2 things trying to catch my eye, normally i do let them go in front but i don't get ths in asda or sainsbury's, maybe they need to introduce self service so the people with a few things can pay there.

You should only let people in front of you in the queue if you're the only other person in the queue. What if the three people waiting behind you are equally pushed for time?

Letting someone with few things go ahead of you because you feel like it or because you want more time to unload your trolley is just what some customers do, isn't it?

Doesn't mean that everyone is expected to!

Do the staff actually call to customers with a few items to come to the front of the queue?

She sounds like a right nutjob!! As a lot of PPs have said, I would usually offer for someone who only had a couple of bits to go in front of me if I had a full shop but she shouldn't have expected it and how strange to go off on one like that....

She said she was late for the bus but drove off in a car. Bloody muppet. Good for you. You were not being unreasonable at all.
