To think parking on these double yellows is inconsiderate despite blue badge?

There is a long road between 2 schools which is used by parents to park on for school run and means traffic coming in either direction has to give way as only one car width can pass parked cars. This road is also on a double decker bus route and is absolute chaos at pick up/drop off. Recently double yellow lines have been added in the middle to allow a passing place and traffic wardens often patrol to prevent people parking on these and school markings. However, there are 3 blue badge holders who park on these lines every day so it is chaos again and often gridlocked. I vaguely know these people through school and in each case it's the driver entitled to the badge but they always have a passenger who actually gets out to pick child up. All the passengers stand by the cars chatting before pick up and I heard them laughing about how they make DP bring them up the school every day as if they brought their own car they'd have to walk further. One of the others then laughed and said it's great they've got their own parking space and they don't have to leave home early to get a close spot! I am fully aware of why blue badge holders are able to park in areas restricted for others but AiIBU to think this isnt on? Finally seemed to be a solution to the chaos and now it's terrible again!

The irony about children's safety on the trip to school, is that the parents who drive their children to school endanger the other children who walk.

I still find it unbelievable that there are 3 parents who have all actively said out loud that they bring their partners just for the space. Hmm

Believe me or don't believe me. I know what I heard.

I'm with you candycoatedwaterdrops just doesn't sound in the least bit likely, maybe there are people parking inconsiderately but I think this story is exaggerated.

I'm really not into making stuff up. Too much effort. But if that's what you think then fair enough. This thread would be pointless if there weren't three - the gap would still just about be big enough and I needn't have written it. I've had the answers I need now thank you and will speak to the people suggested by the helpful posters and hopefully the double yellows will be able to do their job again.

But if you complain surely it will just mean that the person with the disability will leave the car to collect the child (if that's not happening already). The cars will still be there!

catsarenice · 25/01/2017 18:46

I was thinking of the suggestion of red lines/lines on kerb - no one would be able to park there then (apart from when the traffic wardens aren't there sadly).

And thank you for your comments bum I do like a bit of online debate Smile

What would be better is for the school to be pro active here.

Do they have a car park? Can they make arrangements for parents with a disability to collect their child/ten without compromising safety and causing increases traffic by using the double yellow lines?

There are lots of rules around where and when you can park. And I'm sure there are disabled people who abuse the system just as able bodied people who park like dicks.

But I think here they need to look at what would improve the situation for everyone and safety of pupils.

Glad to be of service Grin

You obviously think that this is a problem - but the qualified professional road safety experts who decide what lines and signs go where clearly disagree.

They could have put red lines, they could have put up a restriction sign - they didn't, based on professional knowledge of road safety and the law. They clearly don't consider disabled parking at that spot to be the major obstruction that unqualified you do.

catsarenice · 25/01/2017 19:34

I wonder if they even considered it would happen eh cool? One of the schools opens their car park for disabled users at the end of the day but the car park in the other school isn't very user friendly - steps etc and have to walk a long way round to to school pick up point. There is a massive piece of waste ground which would be perfect but despite many attempts (according to school) the owner is unwilling to sell.

Report them. And make sure the traffic wardens are aware when they come round. My DM had the same issue with someone who was parking outside her house on double yellows on a school run lane. She took a photo and emailed the council. Traffic warden came and booked the woman, who has not parked there since. A lot of councils are clamping down on blue badge abuse.
