"I don't see why being a mum is so difficult. i mean, it's just another job isn't it? And you worked full-time before you had ds..."

yes, except i work day and night shifts, i never get a day off and i can't call in sick!!

ooooo that sort of comment makes me want to chew my fist off.

clothears · 25/02/2007 09:05

And this person is your friend - crumbs. Would love to live on the planet that she does! Im guessing that to date she has no children and therefore I feel cannot possibly understand just how constant it is. When you 'work' you can hand your notice in if you get fed up, or shout at your boss if they make you mad, you get lunch breaks, toilet breaks etc. When you a parent you literally done even get toilet breaks! You are not unreasonable! I would punch her too x

Winestein · 25/02/2007 09:05

All you have to do UD, is to tuck the comment away for the time that your friend has a baby. Then you can just casually say it to her

mm22bys · 25/02/2007 09:05

Is your friend by any chance childless???? Obviously clueless!

grannycrackers · 25/02/2007 09:06

let her do some babysitting for you

Glassofwine · 25/02/2007 09:06

Not unreasonable - in fact - do it

theUrbanDryad · 25/02/2007 09:09

it's a him actually - and unlikely to have kids of his own due to being gay!! i think it was just one of those throwaway comments you make where you don't think about the effect you're having on the other person!! i'm sure i've done it once or twice....

OP posts:
fruitful · 25/02/2007 09:12

Before I had kids, I used to wonder what was so difficult. I mean, babies sleep 16 hours a day, don't they . So that leaves 8, which is what you do at work anyway...

But I at least had the sense not to say this out loud to anyone!

Winestein · 25/02/2007 09:19

Oh! Definitely punch him then. One from each of us

themaskedposter · 25/02/2007 09:22

fruitful!

themaskedposter · 25/02/2007 09:23

oh and give him a from me too theUrbanDryad!!

Themis · 25/02/2007 09:36

Nothing like working 24 hours a day 7 days a week, being on call all the time, mutil tasking, being un paid, undervalued by some embers of society, dealing sick & poo , no training given , no annual staff appraisal except on Mother Day where you might get a card !

Piece of piss !!

TinyGang · 25/02/2007 09:46

I expect I used to think that way - if indeed I gave it any thought at all - before I had children.

Wrong wrong WRONG! )
But you've got to do it to know that

bumperlicious · 25/02/2007 09:58

But if you complain about being a mother (or pg in my case" you get "but it's your choice"...grrr. Remember that next time they complain about their boss/best mate/being hungover!

bran · 25/02/2007 10:15

Invite him over to look after the kids for a weekend so he can prove to you that it's not difficult. [evil emoticon]

I am actually quite tolerant of childless people who think being a mother is easy, they don't know any better. I usually point out that it's only the childless who ever say that being a parent is easy, whereas parents say it's hard work, and voice of experience is more likely to be right.

I get much more irritated by other mothers who claim that it's easy. One woman I work with brought her baby in to visit the office and said of the birth "it was a piece of piss, I don't know what everyone makes such a fuss about". I've never given birth but it still annoyed me. Since then everything has turned out to be a "piece of piss" and whenever my ds does something her dd has always done it "ages ago - it was a piece of piss" (her dd is only a month older than my ds).

edam · 25/02/2007 10:17

I'll hold him down, you punch him. Idiot.

pointydog · 25/02/2007 10:27

I never talk much about kids to people who don't have them. Too wide a gap.

TinyGang · 25/02/2007 10:30

The more she says that bran, the more convinced I'd be that it's a different story behind closed doors.

You do get people like that, they have to keep undermining the whole thing for some strange reason.

But it's daft to keep saying that because she's just giving herself further to fall on a bad day when it all goes pear shaped, and we all know how those days can hit you out of nowhere.

theUrbanDryad · 25/02/2007 17:19

actually, ds has been a little angel today, he slept through most of the night and had his afternoon nap with me on the sofa! sorry, having a squidgy mumma moment!

OP posts:
Winestein · 25/02/2007 18:45

Well, looks like your friend was right then

Elasticwoman · 26/02/2007 00:10

He only said it to annoy
Because he knows it teases.

And look, he's become the subject of a thread on MN without even having to give birth.

nappyaddict · 26/02/2007 00:11

i know people think being a mum is easy. all just sitting at home doing nothing all day. what they don't realise is your attention being needed non stop all day is quite draining. or maybe i'm just being lame ...

Tortington · 26/02/2007 00:15

i hope you said " yeah it
s a piece o' piss - you should baby sit"

Chandra · 26/02/2007 00:15

What you wrote in the OP is the most adequate answer you could give him. Sadly, nothing in the world makes you aware of what a huge and time consuming responsability children are until you have to take care of one.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 26/02/2007 00:23

STring him up by his nipples.
