In fairness he was standing and playing this afternoon (at night he is in a grobag and we are soft so he doesn't go in there til he's already asleep Blush )

I was hoping he'd be at least 2 before he went into a bed. He's only just started sleeping through in the last couple of months and now we're going to be up every 5 minutes when he climbs out and walks into us aren't we??

I wasn't ready for this. Collective wisdom massively appreciated please!

When we took the sides of DD's cot I put cushions on the floor because I was so worried.

She never tried to climb out, so I think she was around 2.5Blush by the time I took the sides off.

Maybe that's why she never gets out of bed. It's conditioned into her that she can't.

We ended up buying a single soon after as it was too narrow and toddler beds were the same width, just longer.

Put a stair gate on his room door and take the side off the cot. The second a child can climb out is the time to change to a bed even if it means putting the mattresses on the floor.

My god 2 before in a bed. My 2were both in beds before they were 1, my dd a full size single. She slept much better and hasn't fallen out. Use guard rails ifworried.

abbsisspartacus · 22/01/2017 19:50

Don't bother with guard rails just use a pool noodle under the sheet goes from to bottom of the bed and works really well

SparklyLeprechaun · 22/01/2017 19:52

We put ours in toddler beds at around 14 months. We started off with an extra duvet by the side of the bed just in case, but it was never needed.

My Dd was moved to a toddler bed at 2.5 as Ds needed her cot Grin

I was worried it would be hard work but it wasn't. She transitioned over really nicely.

She picked out the duvet she wanted and we had a lovely cuddle and a kiss.

It did help she couldn't open the bedroom door too. Though she can now and still doesn't get up

She occasionally falls out but as it's a toddler bed it's not a huge drop and she gets back into bed and goes back to sleep

I think Ds is going to be harder which I'm dreading. I will put a stair gate in his door when he finally moves over because he's a monkey with the door handles too

We have twist door knobs not push down levers.

I would move him and leave the sleep pod.

We changed the cot into a bed for our eldest just after he was one and discovered he could climb and throw himself out head first. We put a stair gate on his door to prevent escape (also we didn't have them on the stairs for various other reasons so the one on the bedroom prevented free access to stairs at night). We never had a side bar but despite being a wriggler in the cot never seemed to fall out of the bed.
He still manages to do circles in his sleep & not fall out but he's 8 now.
I suspect it'll be a bit later for no.2 as he's just not as bothered at moving as his big brother & he's got a ready made slave to bring him what he wants ( has worked out pointing though)

TattiePants · 22/01/2017 19:58

When DD was 18 months she managed to climb / fall out of her cot head first whilst zipped into a grobag. Fortunately she was fine (apart from a large egg on her head!) The sides came off her cot that night.

WhirlwindHugs · 22/01/2017 20:04

2/3 of my kids had to go into beds around this age because they climbed out of cots.

It's annoying, but absolutely the safest thing and we didn't find they woke up a lot more. Getting them to sleep to start with is trickier! Staying with them until they go to sleep for a while can help reduce the chance of jumping out of bed antics!

MiniAlphaBravo · 22/01/2017 20:08

This is the age we changed dd over and she's never fallen out (fingers crossed she won't now) and sleeps better. She's in a full size bed. She doesn't really climb out either, it's happened literally a couple of times.

SaltySeaBird · 22/01/2017 20:08

DD wasn't a lot over a year old, she was quite ahead physically and could pull herself up and climb out. It seemed safer to put her in a bed, it was fine and we put a stair gate across her bedroom door to keep her in her room at night. Until she started climbing over that at 18 months old!

buckyou · 22/01/2017 20:09

First night in cot bed tonight here at 19 months.. Watch this space. When we converted ours into a bed it dropped down quite a lot from where the mattress is in the cot (on lowest setting). So it's not very high.

Catsize · 22/01/2017 20:19

DS was 10mths and DD 14mths when they went into normal single beds.

Catsize · 22/01/2017 20:20

Should add, they had bed rails for a while.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 22/01/2017 20:23

My mum changed ours once we were climbing out. In response we never changed DS until he was about three as he never climbed out and favoured lying there screaming until we went and got him up.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 22/01/2017 20:26

DS2 was just over a year old when we switched to the cotbed- because I caught him teetering on the top of the rail about to crash 3 feet to the floor. We put a thick rug on the floor next to the bed which was very low anyway. He got up 25 times the first night Grin about 6 the second night and then slept fine.

Thingiebob · 22/01/2017 20:30

Both mine were in beds at 12-14 months. I did use a stairgate on the door for one child, the other one didn't need it.

8misskitty8 · 22/01/2017 20:39

Dd2 was in a bed at 1 year old. She climbed out the cot so safer for her to be in a bed. Funny thing was, she couldn't walk , but she was a climber ! Wasn't walking until 18mths.

IWantATardis · 22/01/2017 20:56

We moved to beds as soon as DC started climbing out. It's a long way down from the top of a cot if a toddler was to fall.

We used stairgates on the bedroom door to prevent unsupervised roaming about in the middle of the night until the DC were old enough to manage opening the atairgates.

CalorieCreditEqualsCake · 22/01/2017 21:23

DS1 was 18months when he went into a bed.
Ds2 was always in our bed and we never had a cot.

I was 3 before I had a bed.

My point being, it depends on you, your child and what suits you all.

If I were you, I'd be sorting the bed out

lozzylizzy · 22/01/2017 21:44

I took the sides off when DS1 was about 10 months he couldn't walk but was an excellent climber. I heard him and caught him with one leg over the cot. It all went down hill from there and just spent the next year or two playing with toys instead of sleeping but it was better than falling over the edge of the cot rails!

toconclude · 22/01/2017 21:45

DS1 slept on a mattress on the floor (with bedding, obvs) after he climbed out of his cot (landed on his feet, clever bugger). Only graduated to a bed once DS2 was out of the cot.

Welshrainbow · 22/01/2017 21:48

My DS has to move to toddler bed at 14 months because he kept climbing out. He wouldn't take his grobag off and stand on it. He's been fine in a toddler bed but I reccomend a good guard rail. We haven't had him wandering in the middle of the night yet and he can't reach his door handles yet to get out of the room. I would make sure everything is baby proofed and tethered to the wall in there though, especially if your little one is a climber like mine!
