to not sleep with my DH due to this smell?

I've had to leave the room at 5.30 this morning due to this smell and I'm so annoyed I don't think I'll be going back for a bit. It's coming from his nose. It isn't an obvious bodily odour smell (as in I can't describe it as fishy/ bad breath) but it is an offensive smell and very specific.

It's been happening for about 18 months now and I can't figure out why. I've googled everything possible it could be, got him nasal washes and sprays but these just help the symptoms and don't fix it. I've asked him to see his GP from the start and sometimes he says he should and other times he asks why. He can't smell it at all and has zero other symptoms so doesn't notice it. He's asked his mates and they say the can't smell it so I feel as if I'm going crazy. There is quite obviously a smell! When it's at it's worst, like this morning it stinks the whole room out. I can't be imagining it and it is not normal.

I'm just sick of it really. Why should I have to put up with the smell because he won't go to the GP. I'm just waiting for him to wake up so I can say that I won't be sleeping with him until he takes responsibility for his health Sad

Am I being over sensitive or unreasonable to refuse to put up with this any longer?

OP - when someone mentioned tonsil stones, you said he had his tonsils out two years ago ... and the smell started 18 months ago.

Tonsil stones are basically little lumps of gunk that collect in cavities in the tonsils and accumulate bacteria. They do smell grim. They're quite common in people who have a lot of scarring from previous throat infections, as the scars cause little dents and pockmarks in which food and bacteria get trapped and form the stones, which are soft, yellowish lumps.

Although your husband has had his tonsils removed, I wonder if the operation could have left a scar or pit in his throat where something similar is happening? It seems interesting that the smell started only a few months after he had his tonsils out.

My husband had this so I really feel your pain. If I got into the car after he was in it for a while it was just awful. I did a lot of research and was at the end of my tether when I realised he had been drinking a lot of protein shakes. He also drinks gaviscon by the bottle practically. It is definitely something to do with gut bacteria in my case and this was exasperated by his love of sugary jellies. I got some probiotic stuff from the health shop, he cut out the shakes (hE used to have them after work outs) and switched from gaviscon to nexium. The smell went - I couldn't believe it. It is such a hard smell to describe, it is pungent and seemed to come from his pores. He is unbelievably hygienic had a very strict dental routine and had his tonsils out as a child. Maybe a probiotic from the health shop will help (mine was one you kept in the fridge) he couldn't get the smell himself and thought I was mad - the turning point was giving one of the kids' friends a lift in the car and the child kept talking about the smell in the car.

dollydaydream114 we had a good look at the back of DH throat and there doesn't seem to be anything stuck to it. But, the smell has started to clear since this morning and DH did mention to me he constantly has this feeling he needs to clear his throat. Maybe that could be a tonsil stone ticking the back of his throat? We'll have to keep an eye on his throat from now on!! Would the smell of tonsil stones come from his mouth as well?

He has taken tons of vitamin c and probiotics so far today and I think they may have helped!

Tonsil stones do feel as though you have something small stuck in the back of your through.you can dislodge them by coughing vigorously or I use stick the same as beautician uses for waxing. You can buy them online. The smell is foul, like mothballs mixed with shit , sorry for description. I don't get them very often but as a pp said you don't have to have tonsils to get them

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 22/01/2017 21:39

Norma I weep for anyone that has that disease Sad

PinkSwimGoggles · 22/01/2017 21:44

I don't have tonsils but still have groves and sometimes (rarely) get gunk in there.

DH gets tonsil stones despite having had them out as a child. I suppose there are pits or small bits of tonsil tissue still there. It feels like an irritant on the tonsil bed sometimes although often no discomfort.

Type 2 diabetes generally speaking does not give you the acetone breath (pear drops smell) people are describing. Acidosis is usually not a feature of type 2 but only of type 1 which is usually more juvenile onset unless you have very severely high blood sugar, in which case there would be other symptoms than bad breath. If your DH had type 1 diabetes untreated he'd probably be dead by now. A quick trip to the pharmacist for a finger prick test will clarify that.

Olympiathequeen · 23/01/2017 05:59

DH also has post nasal drip for which he takes nasal sprays which have really helped, so maybe that's a possibility? He has a slightly broken nose and deviated septum which he was too much of a coward to have repairs when he was younger. idiot

justilou · 24/01/2017 07:14

Drinking lots of water is also symptomatic of diabetes.... I would be getting it checked out straight away - especially if he is overweight or has a family history.
Meanwhile - just because Mumsnet loves a good gross story.... My friend's (ex) beloved had terrible breath. He lived in a grotty student dive and all his mates started complaining about it too. Trips to the dentist didn't help, and he was eventually referred to an ENT. The ENT scoped his nose and pulled out a cockroach that must have crawled up his nose in his sleep and died in his sinus!
She said she couldn't really look at him the same again.

My DD started smelling really badly once (aged about 5). She had a sweetcorn kernel up her nostril!!!

fizzingmum · 24/01/2017 08:00

Boomerwang, I have this but have ever linked it to my cycle before. When I was pregnant my sense of smell was so heightened. But in general now I can smell 3 people that no one else can. I need to note when it is strongest and see if there is a pattern. Thanks. It's good to know I'm not imagining it!

SpudULiked · 24/01/2017 08:08

Yes, to the drinking lots of water being related to Diabetes.

But then I also think its funny how it started shortly after the tonsilsbeing removed.

Stupid question but why were they removed? Recurring infections?

zapanditsgone · 24/01/2017 13:03

SpudULiked I agree, I think there must be some connection to the tonsils! He had them removed due to them getting infected nearly once a month.

justilou that is just so grim! Imagine an insect decaying inside your nose Confused

The smell has completely disappeared now but I know it'll be back within a few weeks! He booked an appointment with the GP so I hope this can finally get to the end of it! I hope the fact that the smell has gone now won't put the GP off referring him to an ENT specialist!

Probably will! Sod's law!

Olympiathequeen · 24/01/2017 22:26

Oh and that's the thing with tonsil stones. When they dislodge then the smell goes because so do they. But they do build up again. Maybe he can do the salt water gargles and the regular mouthwash thing.

minisausage · 24/01/2017 22:39

Doesn't trying to pop the tonsil stones make u gag?

Screwinthetuna · 24/01/2017 22:45

Urgh, I've always called tonsil stones 'chunks'. The WORST is when you've been eating something like crisps and 10 mins later realise you have a bit of left over crisp in your mouth that has been stuck in your tooth so you chew it...but the texture is weird...so get it out your mouth and realise you've been chewing on a stinky chunk. Friggin gross!

minisausage · 24/01/2017 23:04

Stinky chunk lol

bimbobaggins · 27/01/2017 17:16

No mini , it doesn't make you gag.
