to not sleep with my DH due to this smell?

I've had to leave the room at 5.30 this morning due to this smell and I'm so annoyed I don't think I'll be going back for a bit. It's coming from his nose. It isn't an obvious bodily odour smell (as in I can't describe it as fishy/ bad breath) but it is an offensive smell and very specific.

It's been happening for about 18 months now and I can't figure out why. I've googled everything possible it could be, got him nasal washes and sprays but these just help the symptoms and don't fix it. I've asked him to see his GP from the start and sometimes he says he should and other times he asks why. He can't smell it at all and has zero other symptoms so doesn't notice it. He's asked his mates and they say the can't smell it so I feel as if I'm going crazy. There is quite obviously a smell! When it's at it's worst, like this morning it stinks the whole room out. I can't be imagining it and it is not normal.

I'm just sick of it really. Why should I have to put up with the smell because he won't go to the GP. I'm just waiting for him to wake up so I can say that I won't be sleeping with him until he takes responsibility for his health Sad

Am I being over sensitive or unreasonable to refuse to put up with this any longer?

Fairylea tonsil stones can be easily treated? Please tell. Sorry off topic OP.

Mermaidinthesea · 22/01/2017 09:32

Yes I was thinking teeth and gum problems in origin.

booklooker · 22/01/2017 09:33

My DH has got no nose.

How does he smell?

Bloody awful!

Ilovetorrentialrain · 22/01/2017 09:33

OP I don't think you're unreasonable by the way - you've tried being sensitive and asking him to go to the GP.

Perhaps try one more time and make it clear how serious you are, as well as being concerned for his health. Hope all works out OK.

Bumbleclat · 22/01/2017 09:43

Ear infection?

FurryLittleTwerp · 22/01/2017 09:56

Does he snore?

Boomerwang · 22/01/2017 10:05

Hi. Every month near my period my sense of smell changes. I have no idea what it is, but I will catch a certain deathly scent coming from someone's breath. I can actually feel the strength of each breath as a battery of this smell coming up my nose, even from across the room. Interestingly, I don't get this from everybody, just one or two people. I have asked others around me if they can smell it and they just look confused and say no, even if they walk right up to the person and smell their breath.

The scent is really offensive, but hard to explain what it smells of exactly.

If you say others can't smell it, then it's possible you have what I have. Mine is clearly linked to the days before my period starts, so do you think it's possible yours could be?

I don't know what it is that I'm picking up as the two people I think of in particular didn't have diabetes, however were related to people who did.

Olympiathequeen · 22/01/2017 10:10

Tonsil stones are a vile strong smell. Google that to see if it is. DH gets it at times and it's not a smell you can describe except some type of rotting smell.

Boomerwang · 22/01/2017 10:11

I've just called up my ex to ask him to get a diabetes check off the back of this thread. He suffers terrible migraines and generally feels low and lethargic quite often. I'm probably being silly but I'm a bit worried now since I can only detect this death smell from him and another ex from long ago.

T1mum3 · 22/01/2017 10:56

Boomerwang, whilst it's a good idea for everyone to have a diabetes check, bad breath in itself isn't a reason to panic. To clarify, people with untreated diabetes can be more prone to infection (e.g. sinusitis, periodontal disease) so if the bad breath is due to that, there is a possibility that that the infection is related to an underlying condition.

Completely separately, in Type 1 Diabetes, there is a very, very specific smell for a specific (and urgent) reason. This acetone smell means going straight to A&E.

ime it smells like nail varnish remover

Fairylea · 22/01/2017 12:30

You can remove tonsil stones yourself with a cotton bud pressed against the side of the tonsil to make them pop out. Lots of videos on you tube about it. Pretty grim to watch though! When you've done it gargle with a really good antibacterial mouthwash like corsodyl regularly and make sure you brush your tongue well every time you brush your teeth. Doing these things has really helped to sort mine out.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/01/2017 13:35

Also gargling with salt water 3x a day really helps get rid of tonsil stones ime.

zapanditsgone · 22/01/2017 14:22

Thanks so much to everyone for your help and replies. The talk of diabetes gave me a bit of a fright and I showed DH and it's given him to kick up the bum to actually going to the GP!

I presume you can't get tonsil stones if you don't have tonsils? DH actually had his out 2 years ago Hmm

When this smell first came around I actually thought it was his breath and he got into a crazy tooth brushing routine, he's still pretty much the same so I don't think it's from his mouth! Stupid question but do you have to be overweight to have type 2 diabetes? DH is slim and has a well balanced diet. I did remember that a good few members of his family have diabetes but he's pretty sure they all have type 2!

zapanditsgone · 22/01/2017 14:24

I'm terrible at describing smells but if I was to try, I'd say it's quite an acidic and metallic smell Hmm I suppose that is similar to nail varnish remover!

CauliflowerSqueeze · 22/01/2017 14:32

You don't have to be overweight to have type 2 diabetes no.

FurryLittleTwerp · 22/01/2017 14:48

When he goes to the GP get him to take a urine sample with him - a quick dip could give the answer about diabetes straight away.

joystir59 · 22/01/2017 14:51

My partner sometimes has a horrid smell that emanates from her nose and comes from her sinuses. She can smell it herself though and avoids dairy for a while as this inflames her sinuses

hollinhurst84 · 22/01/2017 14:52

I was going to say tonsil stones, it's a v specific smell but you would generally smell that when you go to kiss someone too

Blossomdeary · 22/01/2017 14:53

Infected nasal polyps - see GP. My OH has this and periodically one comes out in a tissue - it is GROSS!

Ilovetorrentialrain · 22/01/2017 15:04

Fairylea thanks for the reply. It's my son who has them though so would be wary of poking. He gargles but I will let him know to brush his tongue too. He hates them. I really appreaciate the advice.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 22/01/2017 15:05

I'm glad he's going to the GP. Could it be a residual infection from the surgery as it seems to have started after he had it?

paintedfences · 22/01/2017 15:13

It could be he has an overgrowth of bad bacteria in his stomach, too. Worth checking, I think they can swab for this.

NormaSmuff · 22/01/2017 15:37

if it is like nail varnish remover then that is meant to be kidneys, is he dehydrated?
does he drink excess alcohol?

zapanditsgone · 22/01/2017 16:21

paintedfences I thought this too. Maybe it gets worse when he has sugar as the sugar inflames/ feeds the bacteria!

NormaSmuff he doesn't drink alcohol but he drinks a lot of water!

This problem used to happen really frequently (2-3 times a month) but in the last few months he started taking more vitamin c and probiotics and it really seems to have helped (could just be a coincidence). Now it only flares up once a month!
