To refuse to be ashamed of being a recovering alcoholic?

Yesterday was 2 years since I became clean and sober. I posted as much on my facebook page. I have only about 60 friends and family and pretty much all of them know there is/was an issue.

My parents knew the full extent of it and how close I came to ruining my life/ending up dead/in hospital etc.

My dad phoned me at 8am and asked I take the post down "because we've got family on there".

I am open about my struggle and have found that several people have asked me about it privately and shared their own worries about being addicted to wine especially.

AIBU to refuse to keep quiet or be ashamed?

Thanks.

Recovery is powerful and a day at a time. You have every reason to be proud.

BikeRunSki · 21/01/2017 14:54

That is an achievement to be proud of OP. Nothing to be ashamed of at all. What a shame your dad doesn't recognise this.

DM is forty years sober. I have only really understood the "one day at a time" struggle she had recently, as an adult myself. You and she are superstars.

OohhItsNotHoxton · 21/01/2017 15:17

Yes as a pp said post a photo of your medal on Facebook.
Even by starting this thread you are inspiring and supporting others BTW Smile

Vinorosso74 · 21/01/2017 15:32

Absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, quite the opposite well done you!
I think any milestone like yours should be celebrated and not swept under the carpet. I'm sure more openess around addictions would help others and to help people (like your family) understand what an achievement it is.

pointythings · 21/01/2017 15:42

I think you've achieved great things that you should absolutely be proud of. And yy to what pp have said about awareness raising too. Your dad can just get lost.

Buxtonstill · 21/01/2017 17:49

You have more bollocks than he does, in that he has more regard for others opinions than your feelings. Put it on your status and be proud.

NC1nightstand · 21/01/2017 18:45

There is already so much shame that comes hand in hand with addiction, refuse to carry any more with you! What you have achieved is monumental, truly it is! Please bask in the glow of that achievement for as long as possible. Who knows how many people read your Fb post and were either inspired to make changes themselves or keep going through a particular bad day or thought how brave and wonderful it is that you are able to be so open about such an awful thing that feeds on lies and secrecy and despair.
I am sorry that your Dad cannot be more supportive, that's his own problem, Not yours! Nothing to do with you.
You just keep on, keeping on and living your life the way you want to. You're doing amazing, The very definition of success. X

Welshmaenad · 21/01/2017 19:27

Not at all unreasonable.

You have done something amazing and may inspire someone who is secretly struggling. I salute you for being so open about overcoming your problems, there needs to be less stigma around substance misuse.

Buttwing · 21/01/2017 19:33

You should be so fucking proud of what you did/are doing. Shout it from the rooftops.
As the daughter of an alcoholic who didn't recover and drank himself to death in his forties missing out on his only child's life and meeting any of his four amazing grandchildren I say you are amazing.
I wish my dad had managed it.
