Name changed but frequent poster.

Aibu to think that only pastoral team at school need to know personal details about a child going through tough times and class teachers should only be told that the student is going through a difficult time and XYZ might make them emotional.

I have two experiences with this.

Once I burst in to tears in english, I told that teacher what was wrong and she took me to pastoral care. A note (probably just saying I was having a hard time) was put in my record on the register system but I didn't know, so I was surprised when one of my other teachers held me back to ask if I was ok.

One of the big sisters (not school age) of a girl, in my form, died. She was off school for a while, just before she returned our form tutor told us what had happened and to be careful what we said and be kind to her. (I can't remember how the rest of the school found out, word of mouth possibly). Our RE teacher was not aware and later in the year when the death lesson in RE came around... it wasn't good. She should have had warning, that lesson was upsetting on the whole class but I don't think she did the rest of her lessons that day. The RE teacher apologised to her later, I believe.

Sorry for your loss reds

From everyone else's experience I now think it should best the teachers do know. How much they know depends on the situation.
