AIBU?

AIBU to think it's ok for disabled to park in P&C parking spaces

After the fun with the last post, going from experience too, I wondered how many would support the notion of the buses legislation AND a disabled person parking in a P&C space where ever, if the disabled spaces are full.

Technically we have the right too with a badge.

I've had issues before where the person with me has parked in a P&C space, without DC present, parents have got quite ratty.

Rufus I don't think you were wrong - surely if he had parked in the disabled space it would mean you could both access spaces that would make both your trips to the shop easier?

This is like prams on buses, get rid of them entirely because it's the only thing that gets through to entitled twats

Couldn't agree more

Our IKEA is separate. Disabled spaces usually all full too.

Controversially, I'm a bit mixed on this one.

Being disabled isn't a choice, having children is. Totally agree, and I'm 100% totally fine with parking at the empty end of the car park (which I frequently do to buy a bit of extra space to get children in/out and have room to do up car seats etc, I don't give a rats arse at the distance).

That said, I recently parked in a regular space and returned to find the cars on either side horrendously parked, which left me with about 3 inches on either side to fit children through. I ended up clambering through the boot since I drive an estate - great experience.

Anyway, based on the above, I'm mixed on whether a blue badge user is more or less entitled that small kids potientially being stuck in a car park...

Totally fine with being shouted down for that opinion.

Definitely not a problem, unlike the amount of people who use them without kids or blue badges just because they're precious about their cars.

Yanbu, my mum will often park in P&C if they are closer (some car parks are ridiculous) or the BB ones are full. Seems fair enough to me.

My car has a massive scratch down the side. No idea where it came from as we always use BB spaces.
People get very jealous of BBs, and I'm suspicious that this may be related...

I don't see how any rational or reasonable person would object to this.

Eh? Surely that should confirm things for you. You had to climb in through the boot. A really shitty position to be put in, but you could and did get out of it. What chance do you thing a disabled person would have if they were in that situation? Do you think someone like me, in a back brace, with a walking frame and only able to shuffle along, has the option of climbing in through the boot?

Without a blue badge space I wouldn't be able to get out or into a car. No potential about it.

Well Tara, my hyper mobility was beneficial whenIwas a dancer, and is now beneficial for my children while I'm in my wheelchair...! Your point does stand though, parking is a PITA when I take mine dancing.

Are you feeling very charitable today, Beyond? Grin I take your point about hereditary hypermobility being more likely amongst dance kids (that kind of thing on the very mild end of the scale played a part in my decision to enrol my offspring in such afterschool activities!) but I think you know how many blue badges there are on those cars.

Gits.

It's not really though is it, it's ensuring the survival of a species.

I have never, in my 20 years of driving, been in a car park where there were no BB spaces free but empty P&C spaces. Ever.

So, if a BB holder chooses to park in a P&C space when they could park in a BB space, I think that's a bit shit of them, actually. But if there are no BB spaces and a free P&C space then of course they should park in it.

not what if that p and c space is closer to the store than the blue badge space? Or has better access? Or a clearer walkway?

Good for you. I have, numerous times.

Sirzy again, never come across that. Sounds like there are some poorly designed car parks if that's ever the case.

Piglet how sad for you. Have you complained to the owners of the car park? I know our local Asda recently scrapped some of their P&C spaces to make way for more BB spaces. Also, I was merely pointing out it can't be a massively common issue, no need to get snippy Smile

I don't have a BB but have friends and family members who do. If they went out and couldn't get a BB space they would (due to the reasons they needed a badge) have to turn round and go home. The same couldn't be said of me as a parent with a child.
BB in a parent and child space. OK
Parent using a BB space with no BB. Not.

My dad had a blue badge. He was clearly entitled to it - walked with a walking frame or used a wheelchair. I took him to Asda one day and as there were no disabled bays parked in a P&Carol one. I was getting his frame out the boot when this woman marches up and starts shouting at him that it's a P&C bay not a disabled bay and 'people like him' meant people like her who were should be using it couldn't. Her children were standing looking rather embarrassed at this point. They were probably about 8 & 10 years old so really she wasn't in desperate need of a P&C bay.

My dad explained there were no disabled bays and obviously he couldn't walk any further than necessary. She interrupted him and said very rudely 'I don't care! It's a patent and child bay' My dad turned to her and said oh well in that case were fine. She - pointing at me - is my child. I'm her parent. Looks like we're safe to park here then and walked off. Her face was totally shut. Even her children found it funny.

I was so proud of my dad Grin

Again, not true. If you don't have enough space to take baby of the car seat, or baby in car seat, you have to turn round and go home too.

As I said above, no issue with disabled people using parking space they need, I just find it annoying when people pretend you don't need extra space for a baby.

Report
Wolfiefan · 20/01/2017 17:34

With a baby in the car you can park at the furthest reaches of the car park at the end of a row (or even outside of it) and walk.
My grandfather could manage a few steps before needing to rest so that wasn't an option for him.

At Morrisons in Paignton the p&c spaces are closer so I use them.
Otherwise if the BB bays are full (often with non badge holders) then yes I use p&c
