To let 13 year old DS watch Game of Thrones?

kitnkaboodle · 19/01/2017 00:04

We are 4-5 years behind the rest of the world, obv .. I gave DS DVD of the first series in his Xmas stocking. It had a 15 cert on the box, which I gauge to be ok for DS. However, disks inside are variously labelled 15 and 18. From what I can tell, though, the sex scenes seem to be 1960s soft porn-y (yet quite frequent - and gratuitous!) Not sure .. I think I'm probably ok with it. He's quite chilled. Any thoughts? Any shockers to come??

No absolutely not. I know I am just adding to the list but as no one has mentioned it, and it's not one people tend to remember but for me one of the scenes that is just too much (and I say that as a big fan of GOT) is where Joffrey forces Ros to beat the other prostitute. I always have to fast forward that part.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/01/2017 01:06

Brief Not really an accurate description - plus the women kick ass.

BastardGoDarkly · 19/01/2017 01:06

Holy fucking shit no.

I've watched some hardcore stuff in my time, but GOT had me reaching for the cushion in places.

No, no and again, nope.

BriefExclamations · 19/01/2017 01:07

I claudious was released in the U.K. In 1976.

kitnkaboodle · 19/01/2017 01:15

Err .. I know ... that's when I was 13 ...

In the country I'm in it's censored before it's allowed to be broadcast - not even suitable for adults here! No way would I let my 13 year old watch it. Even the censored version.

kitnkaboodle · 19/01/2017 01:22

In my defence (apart from that copy being labelled 15) ... GoT seems so mainstream now. People reference it all the time, joke about it as if we're all familiar with it .. play the music on classic fm and publish the music for use in schools (this is an area of mine ..). Lulled me into thinking it was just A Thing that everyone was supposed to be into, therefore not porn or hardcore violence. Odd. It's gone away. Will have a talk tomorrow!

It is VVVVVVunsuitable for a 13 year old ... firstly all the nudity/general brutality/gore/horror and gratuitous sex and profanity and then, just off the top of my head there's scenes like:

SPOILERS AHEAD covering my bases

Bran being paralysed by a push out of the window because he saw twin brother and sister Cersei and Jaime fucking

The execution of Ned Stark by the coward Joffrey Baratheon (he makes Ned's daughter watch as he told her he'd pardon him, then beheads him and puts his head on a spike)

Daenerys eating a still beating horse heart to save her unborn child

Viserys getting his Golden Crown as molten gold is poured over his head killing him

The Red Wedding - the Starks are betrayed, with the pregnant king's wife, Talisa Stark, being repeatedly stabbed in the stomach

The Purple Wedding - where sadistic Joffrey Baratheon is poisoned to death

Sansa's wedding night (basically if there's a wedding it's not going to be a happy occasion) where she is raped

Anything involving Ramsay Bolton (especially if it involves Theon Greyjoy) - he sets children on fire, kills prostitutes for fun, skins Theon alive and cuts off his penis, whilst keping him as a pet ... amongst other things

Esp his death scene - where he's beaten half to death by Jon only for Sansa (who he has spent months also being tortured by Ramsay) to decre he should be thrown to his ravenous dogs to finish off

The Mountain vs the Viper (the death by head crushing like a watermelon)

Princess Shireen's sacrifice - her father allows his pre-teen daughter to be burnt at the stake as a sacrifice for good fortune in battle

Mirri Maz Duur's blood magic on Khal Drogo - she basically zombifies him using dark magic as she manipulates Daenerys

Arya Stark (aged about 15) stabbing out the eyes of Ser Meryn Trant

OldGuard · 19/01/2017 01:27

It's barely suitable for adults

GreatFuckability · 19/01/2017 01:34

She says that women get raped in it then fall in love with their rapists?? Is that correct?

I think she may be referring to the Dany/Drogo storyline, where she is effectively given to him in an arranged marriage type set up, but they do end up falling in love. I guess you could call that him raping her, yes. However, I would argue that arranged marriage is a common real life thing that happens, and it's not a bad thing for girls to be aware of, and to know that thats not how it should be. ultimately Dany becomes the Queen of many cities and a total strong badass. again, not a bad theme.
Its all about knowing your own child, guts and gore are not something that bothers my DD, she knows its not real in that sense, and so she's not affected by it. i didn't let her watch the Princess Shireen thing however.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 19/01/2017 01:35

no Virgin should ever watch game of thrones, ever.

ImYourMama · 19/01/2017 01:53

Dont shoot...

My viewing was never censored past the age of 11/12, I was allowed to watch what I liked, and anything I didn't understand I asked my parents what was going on, and a lot of open and honest discussions around sex, crime and relationships came from this. It depends on how mature your 13 year old is, as on the basis of a fantasy drama about a made up world, this is second to none. BUT, would he understand that this is made up and obviously not how you conduct 'real' relationships?
You know your son and whether he's mature enough for this. Although if he's not bothered (he's not watched it yet) I'd just remove it and wait until he asks to see it.

Trifleorbust · 19/01/2017 02:56

I wouldn't.

sashh · 19/01/2017 06:15

OK series one.

Incest, quite a graphic scene that leaves little to the imagination. It results in Bran (anout 8 yo) becoming paralised and a second attempt is made on his life.

Wolf puppy killed.

Child has a fight with another child who is a prince, child who is not prince runs away so is run down and cut to pieces by big bad man - OK you don't see the chase you just see his body being brought back.

There is a beheading in episode one.

It is revealed that the king is not the true father of 'his' children but their father is the queen's brother.

Ned Stark is beheaded in front of two of his children.

Many scenes are set in a brothel with quite a lot of nudity, not 60/70s soft porn/breasts out but they used porn actors for most of these scenes.

A 13 year old is married off to a much older man, her brother tells her that he'd let the older man's followers fuck her, and their horses if it got him what he wants. (Actress is much older and age is not given in the TV series)

A few scenes of women showing other women how to seduce a man.

A few nasty deaths, molten gold poured over a head, woman being tied to a funeral pyre and burned to death.

This really isn't appropriate for your son at all! Please rethink your decision.

MrsGB2015 · 19/01/2017 06:28

You would be irresponsible to let a 13yo watch games of throne for all the reasons outlined above. Wait a few years, I don't see what the rush is to expose your child to this.

Nataleejah · 19/01/2017 07:48

13 no. 15 yes.

coconutpie · 19/01/2017 07:59

Fuck no - are you insane? You bought GoT for a 13 year old? You really need to start acting a bit more responsibly when choosing gifts for your child. I love GoT but no way in hell is it remotely suitable for a child to watch. I can't imagine what kind of an effect that would have on a 13 year old.

MistressMerryWeather · 19/01/2017 08:13

Fuck a duck, no.

How much has he watched?

CancellyMcChequeface · 19/01/2017 08:16

I read the books at 13. I wouldn't have been comfortable watching the show at that age. I did watch all sorts of 18-rated horror movies, though. The sex scenes would have bothered me much more than the violence back then. You know your son, his maturity level and whether or not he'd find it upsetting to watch.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/01/2017 08:17

Euphemia Isn't he Grin

But then I also adore Jaime and couldn't hate him for pushing Bran Blush

I presume those who allow their underage children to watch GoT also have no issue with letting them watch porn/torture movies etc. Because the sex and violence is every bit as graphic, except you generally don't see penises.

The story is interesting and complex and fabulous but why you would expose a child to it (and I actually saw someone of 17 being described as a child on here) is baffling.

Most horror movies are only 15 rated, that should tell you all you need to know about the show.

MissVictoria · 19/01/2017 08:28

I'm 27 and i can't watch a tv show or film with a sex scene in if my dads around! :P
I remember watching Spartacus when the first series was on TV, i was an adult and it was so uncomfortable with my dad around, especially as i liked the story/plot of the series, just not all the nudity/sex!

MistressMerryWeather · 19/01/2017 08:29

Cheers Livia.

Tehehe. :o
