To let 13 year old DS watch Game of Thrones?

We are 4-5 years behind the rest of the world, obv .. I gave DS DVD of the first series in his Xmas stocking. It had a 15 cert on the box, which I gauge to be ok for DS. However, disks inside are variously labelled 15 and 18. From what I can tell, though, the sex scenes seem to be 1960s soft porn-y (yet quite frequent - and gratuitous!) Not sure .. I think I'm probably ok with it. He's quite chilled. Any thoughts? Any shockers to come??

Here's a screenshot of something that happens. Maybe you should have researched this a bit.

NSFW, GORY, DON'T CLICK IF YOU DON'T LIKE BLOOD

The Princess Shireen episode previous posters are alluding to is about a little girl being graphically burned alive as a sacrifice to a dark God. I can't stress enough how little of this show is suitable for children.

PenguinsandPebbles · 19/01/2017 00:36

The first episode is very tame compared to the rest of the episodes, it gets darker and darker.

Really not suitable for a 13yo

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/01/2017 00:36

Dodo

Jaime/Cersei sex scenes

Robb/Talisa

Jon/Ygritte

There are a lot of very strong female characters but I can't believe the OP is comparing it to I Claudius

Here's an idea - if you want to let your child watch something that is rated for adults, how about you watch it all first to assess suitability?

WonkoTheSane42 · 19/01/2017 00:37

Is the Princess Sireen episode the one with the squished (via the eyes) head?

No, but that one's another lovely highlight.

Don't get me wrong, I love the show. It's just not for children.

Huldra · 19/01/2017 00:39

Really? You gave a 13 year old GoT dvd for Christmas, the middle of Jan has passed and you're suddenly thinking about it? He hasn't watched it yet? Or you're wondering why he hasn't? He has and is asking questions? Despite little news on Got recently you have decided to Google and gone OH NO My Poor Child?

I don't believe any of the above

Nanny0gg · 19/01/2017 00:39

I grew up in the 70s when this kind of stuff was not unknown on fairly mainstream TV. I for one was agog at 'I Claudius' at his age. That has some interesting themes ....

I wouldn't let a 13 year-old watch I Claudius either. And it wasn't considered family viewing...

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/01/2017 00:40

Oh and the liberal use of the word cunt is a bonus.

Like PPs, I love it but I would be seriously concerned about someone letting their child watch it (even as an 'educational' exercise)

Bambambini · 19/01/2017 00:43

Absolutely not! Have a 14.5 yr old son and it's just too distubing, violent and sexual. I love GOT though have an issue with their violent, sexual portrayal of women.

DodoRevival · 19/01/2017 00:43

Oh yes, Princess Sireen - the burning alive of the daughter. think I might have blocked it out

Craster's Keep is another delightful episode. If I'm recalling the name right.

Nanny0gg · 19/01/2017 00:44

i think the themes of sex and stuff are obviously there,

Murder, incest, rape, torture, gore, mutilation...

Perfectly suitable for 13 year-olds... Confused

kitnkaboodle · 19/01/2017 00:45

This is where I got the 15 cert from, for those that doubt it ..

The women are fairly strong characters though.

Yy to Crasters Keep.

Some people are either naive or stupid

DodoRevival · 19/01/2017 00:45

Anyone mentioned the torture? That's quite grim too.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/01/2017 00:46

That's not a UK classification mark

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/01/2017 00:46

Ooh and Viserys' crown...

And Jamie's hand

DodoRevival · 19/01/2017 00:48

Not sure that's any countries classification mark. Is it a pirate copy?

DeleteOrDecay · 19/01/2017 00:48

Either the DVD is a pirate copy or it's not from this country. Would it even play on a region2 DVD player?

Either way you shouldn't let your 13yo watch it. Far far to young.

kitnkaboodle · 19/01/2017 00:53

He honestly hadn't watched it yet. I broke the seal on it n watched the first episode. Totally take the point that it gets worse later. The reason I compared it to the 1960s - and I actually meant to type 1970s! - was probably because of the number of gratuitous tits-getting-out. I think that probably bothers me most - the objectification ... I'd hoped that the sex was kind of an occasional titillation, but it does seem to be the focus of every other scene ..

OP posts:
kitnkaboodle · 19/01/2017 00:54

Yes, it plays on our dvd just fine. Bloody ebay ....

OP posts:
EggnogChai · 19/01/2017 01:00

Yeah no it's not appropriate at all. There's full on sex scenes, rape scenes, torture, gruesome murder and bad language.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/01/2017 01:01

You could have researched it on the internet you know. There's all sorts of info available about it - plus even before I ever watched it I was aware of the controversy surrounding it.

How about you don't let him watch it til he is, I dunno, 18?

BriefExclamations · 19/01/2017 01:03

my 13 year old watches it with me. she's read the first couple of books and loved them, so we watch it together. i think the themes of sex and stuff are obviously there, but there are also other themes which i think are good for girls to see

I haven't watched it as one of my adult DDs has banned it from the house 😂 . She says that women get raped in it then fall in love with their rapists?? Is that correct? If, so I don't think that I want to watch it let alone let a child watch it. It sounds twisted.
I'd have less issues with normal consensual sex scenes.

iLoveCoffeeAndChocolate2017 · 19/01/2017 01:03

Not at all 😕 I'm 35 and find it a bit much!

kitnkaboodle · 19/01/2017 01:03

Ok - I'm getting the idea. Will put it on ice for a few years. Am I the only one that remembers I Claudius as being totally hardcore, tho?? Maybe not graphic, but themes of rape, incest (lots), abortion ... I used to watch it when I got home from Guides!! Defo aged 13. God knows what my parents were thinking.

EggnogChai · 19/01/2017 01:04

Tbf you should have researched it before you bought it - you would have then known it was a 18 in the U.K.
