Smells like off milk, it's driving me insane! Can't find it and the inlaws are coming for the day tomorrow!

Bin has been cleaned, recycling drawer, fridge, looked behind fridge, behind cooker, cleaned all cupboards, floor and surfaces scrubbed.

What is it??

Check your chopping boards, especially plastic. I had one like this and it took me ages to find out what is was. It was in a closed drawer and I could smell it.

deeedeee · 17/01/2017 22:28

I've now checked the top of the cupboards and there's nothing there.

I literally have checked everything!

not a bag
not a mat
not in a bag
not in a bowl
not underneath
nor under the hood
this smell is bad
this smell is not good
I CANNOT FIND THE KITCHEN SMELL
I CANNOT FIND THE STENCH FROM HELL

Where do you keep potatoes?
Those bastards smell dreadful when they go bad.

deeedeee · 17/01/2017 22:37

in the fridge! ( I have a big fridge and not much space for a vegetable rack. don't judge me)

never has my kitchen been simultaneously so clean and yet so disgusting.

My father in law is going to spend the day in a state of constant fear

Is it stronger near anything in particular?

deeedeee · 17/01/2017 22:55

It's stronger next to the sink and fridge. But the kitchen isn't huge, so that's also close to everything else. It seems to come and go too. Get stronger wafts occasionally. Yesterday could smell it more by the door

Mouldy lemon? They smell really bad - check the depths of your fruit bowl!

AgedRelative · 17/01/2017 22:58

Have you had all the drawers and trays out of fridge? Milk crumbs can get in buried down the back of the door insert thingys?

PS - love the Green Eggs and Ham homage.

scottishdiem · 17/01/2017 23:01

Smell in drain outside coming up sink? Had that once. Needed to call out the water company to clear it. Alternatively milk but on the under side of the fridge (like a spillage splash upwards if you see what I mean?).

Tinkerbell7373 · 17/01/2017 23:15

We have an American fridge freezer too and I know there's a drip tray becasie we've had a problem with the pipe that goes to ours splitting and leaking. If your fridge is self defrosting - which unless it's ancient it will be - then it has a drip tray somewhere.

Iwannasnack · 17/01/2017 23:16

You don't smell it inside the fridge? Have you pulled the fridge out and checked underneath and behind?

Tinkerbell7373 · 17/01/2017 23:16

A drain smell won't really smell like off milk as OP had said she can smell, drains will most likely be fishy.

Have you checked down the sides of cooker ? Between cooker and cupboards - amazing how much gets spikes and dropped down that tiny gap !

Tinkerbell7373 · 17/01/2017 23:17

I meant to say drains will most likely be a fishy or eggy farts smell !

MotherFuckingChainsaw · 17/01/2017 23:19

That was totally worth it just for the DrSeuss tribute

We banished our odd smell by putting the nozzle attachment on the hoover and going round all the skirting boards, under cupboards and dragging all appliances out. Then mopped the lot with zooflora.

I think a mummifying vegetable had got under something because it cured it.

I know you say there's no fridge drip tray but we had this smell in a rented house. We bleached and cleaned for 4 hours until the only thing left to try was the fridge- it was a built in one. We unscrewed it from the cupboard and found the drip tray at the back. It had been there for 10 years since the house was built and the landlord had no idea so had never cleaned it, there was nothing in the manual or online about it. It was truly disgusting. I think you'll have to move your fridge out and check it properly.

NapQueen · 17/01/2017 23:28

Could it be you OP?

Or has something slipped down behind a radiator?

DirectMe · 17/01/2017 23:29

Op, this may sound obvious but have you checked your oven? I too cleaned like a whirling dervish once, but could still smell the smell. Days later, as I went to cook something in the oven, I discovered a baking tray with chicken on it. As I served dinner up, I put the leftovers in the oven so the cats wouldn't steal it while we were eating. But I forgot all about it. I now have a habit of repeatedly checking the oven even if I haven't used it.

It's stronger next to the sink and fridge.

Many years ago DM's fridge was super smelly inside. Everything was pulled out, thrown away, cleaned but it still smelled.
Eventually she moved the fridge to find that a rat had got underneath and chewed through the wiring, killing it. The rat's teeth completed the circuit for the light. Every time the fridge was opened a charge went though the rat warming it up!

haveacupoftea · 17/01/2017 23:30

Old standing water is usually the cause of bad smells you cant find...pour bleach and hot water down the sink, check for mingy old cloths, check drains outside arent blocked. When my drains were blocked they werent exactly fishy - they smelt more like a rotting corpse drenched in the devil's piss.

frauleinsallybowles · 17/01/2017 23:44

hope u find the smell op

That is priceless!!

OP have you checked the drip tray Wink

Joking aside, my fridge was the source of my mystery kitchen smell. There was a tray in the base of the fridge that has ridges in it to stack bottles, but it's removable with a flat tray underneath. When I removed it, I found it was full of sour milk that had been there for years a while.

Also, I had some nice ripe camembert that gave a nasty wiff every time I opened the fridge. Still ate it though, the wiffier the better!

GrowingAPea · 17/01/2017 23:49

Something behind/ within the radiator?

deeedeee · 18/01/2017 00:08

Pulled out the fridge
Pulled out the oven
Cleaned inside and under
No rats or chicken
Not in a bowl
Don't think it's me
Not in a cupboard
I've checked them you see!
I do not have a drip tray ma'am
The smell still lingers, tired I am
