Smells like off milk, it's driving me insane! Can't find it and the inlaws are coming for the day tomorrow!

Bin has been cleaned, recycling drawer, fridge, looked behind fridge, behind cooker, cleaned all cupboards, floor and surfaces scrubbed.

What is it??

I had an off milk smell in my kitchen once, I looked everywhere.
Eventually i found it was the bottom of my mug tree.
It was metal with a cork base that had a kind of fuzzy felt stuck to it which had absorbed liquids over time.

Did you clean the surfaces with a cloth that had been hanging around a bit?

If you walk out of the kitchen does the smell come with you?! Grin
Have you checked under the fridge? You'd be amazed how many dog treats seem to hide under mine (with the cat hair)...

Pull your fridge out there's a stupid little tray thing at the back that can go rancid if you don't clean it out often enough #crapoldfridge

Do you have a cat?

I once had an awful smell in my kitchen which turned out to be a dead rat that my cat had dropped into the extractor hood. It took us days to locate it, I shall never forget it.

Intrigued...was also going to insist on checking the fridge drip tray (I have experience of that, but clearly you don't have one), and checking cupboards (I also have experience of a long forgotten bag of carrots which had liquefied and smelled like vomit), but you've checked the cuoboards too.

Will be fascinated to learn what it is. We are just at the tail end of a rotting mouse under the floor in our bedroom...it's been a week but it is fading. Mouse bodies dessicate slowly and stink to high heaven - there is no smell quite like it - but it doesn't last long. We live in the country and the mice are prolific, we've had one or two over the years and always used traps rather than poison for this reason. No idea why this one chose to die under the floorboards though...maybe a protest for continually removing it's food source.

If its a floating floor, i'd be down on my hands and knees sniffing it bit by bit, just to make sure its not coming from underneath..

A baby bird once got trapped in a vent under the oven. It's on an internal wall so no idea how. Do you have vents?

The bird was ok but it took ages to find where the tweeting was coming from.

Drains! Sink trap? Overflow? My disherwasher smelled sometimes, I discovered it was gunk trapped under the door seal and the front of the door on the inside. I use a small teat brush to clean under the seal and a sponge to clean the door. I also changed to Fairy dishwasher tabs as they leave it spotless.
Extractor fan filter?

Have you painted anything in the kitchen recently? There is a paint that gives off a funny smell!

Report
dnwig · 17/01/2017 21:57

This happened to us, it was something wrong in drainage of the dishwasher.

Are there any coats or trainers hung up anywhere ?
Perhaps a mat, by the door ?

Check your vegetable rack. I had a bag of baby potatoes in a polythene bag and they'd been forgotten and went off. The stench was indescribably awful. Blush

How about the underside of your kitchen worktops?

We had this issue in the staff kitchen at work recently... Someone had spilt milk and cleaned the worktop, however milk had trickled and congealed on the underside. It stank!

Extractor fan/cooker hood needing a clean? I've read on here of someone finding maggots in theirs!

Check the fruit bowl. Pick up the fruit. I've had mouldy satsumas giving off a stench for days before I realised, because they looked fine on top but were just mouldy underneath. Although that smell was a bit like shoe polish...
