Hi everyone! We are moving from London to Glasgow in March I have two children (3 and 15 months) and am 6 months pregnant (HELP) LOL. we are leaning towards southside; polakshields has been recommended, but has anyone else got suggestions. I am desperate to find a nursery for my son... Pref with council funding... But I just need him in a good nursery so I would sacrifice the funding... Any advice would be amazing!!!! Please help.

Op with 3 under 3 (u madwoman! ) u r going to want to be on the ground floor/in a house with a bit of garden. 1000pcm should get u that in a nice area but it will restrict your choices a lot. Vast majority of the housing in Glasgow is flats

Cupoftchaiagain · 19/01/2017 08:20

Feel free to come back to this thread with some flats u find /areas and we'll help u decide about them!

Cupoftchaiagain · 19/01/2017 08:26

Also, the subway is not buggy friendly so disregard it when looking at transport. Trains and buses are fine. Even though your boy is young do look a bit at the catchment school (there will be 2: Catholic and non denominational) as many kids will go from their nursery straight to local school. Look for good parks nearby too!

Bwith3 · 20/01/2017 00:17

Thanks for your messages again!! Just gone through a few properties in a range of different areas when we decide a handful in particular I'll come back to u with areas again....

@Cupoftchaiagain... I'm deff a mad woman (it really hit me today), trying to get our property on rent here in London too Shock....life's an adventrue... Right?? Hmm

Eaglesham is lovely. Lived there when I was wee. Don't dismiss the southside though! And I have very fond memories of Giffnock, but only because that's where my granny lived.

Bwith3 · 20/01/2017 08:03

Ok so I've got a list of some places but I don't know if they are south, west or north...can someone just go down the list and tell me which part of glasgow all the places are located, would save me from google-ing each one Confused

Need to find location:
East Kilbride
Strathhaven
East Dunbartonshire
East Renfrewshire (bit out)- no parking best schools
Bishopsbriggs
Lenzie
Scotstoun
Eaglesham
Newton mearns
Kingspark
Victoria park
Giffnock
Newton mearns
Maryhill
Milngavie

Well actually some of them are repeats of my others lists....but no harm in double checking I guess Grin

No helpful advice re nurseries but I moved to Glasgow from London earlier in the year and it's the best decision I ever made :) I think you'll love it!

Cupoftchaiagain · 20/01/2017 09:09

East Dunbartonshire - n - also known for good schools
East Renfrewshire (bit out)- no parking best schools
Bishopsbriggs - n in east dunbartonshire
Lenzie n- in ed
Scotstoun - w
Eaglesham s

East Renfrewshire is the county where Clarkston and Giffnock are (both of which have come recommended to you). It's in the Southside and, as far as I'm aware, parking isn't a problem. That's the west End.
Not much to do at all in Lenzie. Nice area, but boring. Still, there's nearby Kirkintilloch, with its parks and sporting facilities.
Add Jordanhill to your list (West End). Would be my top choice, but v expensive.
Also, look at Stepps. You may get more bang for your buck. And it has its own train station (with parking) direct to the cc.
rule out both East Kilbride and Maryhill Wink

SusanneLinder · 20/01/2017 10:44

East kilbride..south west.
Strathaven...8 miles away from above ..no train station, you need to go to East Kilbride.
Eaglesham..4 miles in other direction from EK. This comes under East Renfrewshire as does Newton Mearns and Giffnock.
Kings Park is south Glasgow.
Bishopbriggs and Lenzie are north of the city, good train links to Glasgow.
Milngavie and Maryhill are North West of Glasgow. I'd be careful with Maryhill, some nice parts and some rough parts.
Scotstoun and Victoria Park border each other more or less...they are west of the city.

SusanneLinder · 20/01/2017 10:51

Why would you rule out East Kilbride? I moved here from Glasgow 17 years ago. Schools are great and have better results than vast majority of Glasgow schools.
I said earlier, its not architecturally pretty but its 5 mins to pretty countryside, Calderglen Park is brilliant, huge shopping centre and great sports facilities, eating places and a community feel. You can get a 4 bed detached house for almost the price you'd pay for a tenement in Glasgow.

LunaLoveg00d · 20/01/2017 10:58

Bearsden is between Mary hill and Milngavie to the north - falls into east Dunbartonshire and schools are great.

Dieu · 20/01/2017 11:11

I'd still rather be in Glasgow though Susanne! (no offence meant. My first love came from EK, so I have very fond memories of the place. Thought I was going to die of excitement first time I took the bus there!).

I know people who live in Newton Mearns OP, and love it, but it has nice and not so nice bits.

MercyMyJewels · 20/01/2017 11:34

Anyone else notice that there are no signs for Glasgow once you are in East Kilbride? There are plenty of signs for the various areas of EK but none for Glasgow. Once you are in you can't get out Grin. Plus you need to take the car to get a pint of milk.

Newton means is a bit soulless

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/01/2017 11:35

One of the advantages of living in a small city like Glasgow is that it’s already so accessible to the countryside etc. So I wouldn’t really see any advantage to living in a commuter town like East Kilbride. Giving up all the benefits of city living for few returns.

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/01/2017 11:37

And Lorraine Kelly is from East Kilbride. It's a naw from me.

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/01/2017 11:46

I don't mind certain parts of Maryhill. A friend of mine recently bought a lovely period house there and her street is very nice and normal. No pyjama wearing bams so far. And there is a lot of regeneration going on around the Speirs Wharf area, loads of money being spent turning it into a cultural quarter. So ten years from now I think it will be pretty different. Obviously that's irrelevant to the OP's search but just a different angle on the ‘Maryhill is rough’ school of thought.

SusanneLinder · 20/01/2017 11:56

Well depends where you live whether you need the car to get milk..Grin. If you live in parts of Lindsayfield or Stewartfield, then maybe. Wink
Personally I couldn't live in Glasgow now. Too busy for me. I avoid it unless I absolutely have to go. I tend to shop in Silverburn or EK.
I like it because everything is on my doorstep and it was great for the DC's growing up. Swimming and Ice Rink ( when it reopens), 5 mins away so they didn't really need to go to Glasgow so allowed to do stuff younger.
Each to their own though. I know lots of people hate the place because of the roundabouts. However there arent so many traffic queues as roundabouts generally keep the traffic moving.
And yes, you can get out of EK...you just need to know how to. We like it here, we want you to stay...Grin

SusanneLinder · 20/01/2017 12:03

Mitzy We apologise for Lorraine, several times over.
But we did have Kate Dickie ( from GOT)
Alex Ferguson and Miss Hoolie..Wink, if that's any better?
And George Orwell wrote part of 1984 from Hairmyres Hospital, cos we have kultcher and everyfink...Grin

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/01/2017 12:15

Kate Dickie is a mighty fine actress so that does go some way towards alleviating the Lorraine shame. Not all of it you understand, because well, it’s Lorraine Kelly!

user1484565872 · 20/01/2017 12:16

Dont

MercyMyJewels · 20/01/2017 12:24

Roddy Frame too Susanne and he's a God.

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/01/2017 12:36

For a moment I had a thought that Teenage Fanclub were from EK too. But I see they're from Bellshill. Along with the BMX Bandits and the Soupdragons.

But don't move to Bellshill OP.

blackpoolassy · 20/01/2017 12:45

Wow never knew those bands were Glaswegians!
