Hi everyone! We are moving from London to Glasgow in March I have two children (3 and 15 months) and am 6 months pregnant (HELP) LOL. we are leaning towards southside; polakshields has been recommended, but has anyone else got suggestions. I am desperate to find a nursery for my son... Pref with council funding... But I just need him in a good nursery so I would sacrifice the funding... Any advice would be amazing!!!! Please help.

Stay away from Maryhill, jings it's awful. If you want to brmoutsudrbthe city Lenzie is lovely and has a gray secondary school. Giffnock and thornliebabk are both very nice. All these areas are served by trains. I have lived in south side and wouldn't rush back whereas my best friend absolutely loves it. You get more for your money outside of the city.

ephemeralfairy · 17/01/2017 23:22

We're in Mount Florida (south side) right by the station. We really like it. Ten mins to Central on the train, plenty buses from Battlefield Road and Queens Park is lovely. Lots of nice shops and cafes within walking distance in Shawlands, which also has the BEST charity shops!!
I work in East Renfrewshire, based in Giffnock but I cover Newton Mearns and Clarkston too. All are nice places. Can't advise on nurseries but East Ren seems very family-oriented.

Fluffyears · 17/01/2017 23:26

Bearsden is also very good for families

"brmoutsudrbthe"? "gray secondary school?" "thornliebabk?"

I think you need to stay aff the Buckie, fluffy. Wink

My sisters are both in East Renfrewshire (Clarkston and Giffnock). East Ren has the best state schools in Scotland; think Williamwood may be still at no.1. It is very nice, and has loads of parks and excellent links to the city centre.
My sister's eldest started p1 (first year of primary school) back in August, and my sis had to sign something to say that if they moved out of catchment, they may have to give up their place at the school. Something to consider OP, so it's best to be sure from the start.
I love the West End; beautiful parks, lots of independent wee shops and coffee shops (inc Waitrose!), the Botanic Gardens, excellent pubs etc. However it is busy and expensive, with problematic traffic and parking. And because it's all flats, you could end up with some troublesome Glasgow Uni students as neighbours. I was one!!

Fucking phone!

Wish I did have wine but a recent head injury means no alcohol :(

Hannah4banana · 17/01/2017 23:34

I recently moved to Glasgow, we looked at Southside first as I work in govan (def font move there) but fell in love with the West and picked anniesland. We are renting at the moment to try the area but will definitely buy here. I just love it, so much to do and loads of beautiful walks.
I work a lot in the south, bad areas everywhere just do your research first and you'll be fine. The weegies are a friendly sociable bunch!
Good luck with the move!

Dieu · 17/01/2017 23:34

Bearsden is miles out though. I guess it depends how close to the city centre the OP has to be.
I have heard good things about Newton Mearns as an area, but it is very mixed, with lots of new housing.

Fluffyears · 17/01/2017 23:34

Dieu is right about students, usually 6 of the squeezed into a two bedroom flat.

Hannah4banana · 17/01/2017 23:36

Round about us it's mainly houses and cottage flats and we have a driveway so you can find affordable, quieter places in the west too Grin

GiantHulkHands · 17/01/2017 23:36

Yabu to post in AIBU Smile

Another one for Southside; more for your money and vibrant family living. Good luck OP.

liz70 · 17/01/2017 23:38

"Wish I did have wine but a recent head injury means no alcohol"

Oh, nasty; hope you're feeling better soon. Flowers

We're in the NE but I doubt that's where the OP is after. Grin

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 18/01/2017 00:17

Thank you 19lottie82
I'm hardly suggesting Springburn or Milton here!
We don't know OP's budget, but I think its always worth pointing out that The West End and bloody Bearsden are not the only areas in Glasgow. Especially for people coming from London who might be used to seeing high prices and just not realise that there's cheaper stuff out there.

Fluffyears · 18/01/2017 00:19

Bearsden has two stations and a regular bus service and it's great for families. The OP should have as much information as possible. I'm not suggesting it is the only area but it's certainly a good option.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 18/01/2017 00:29

@imisschocolate - since when has kings park been a no go area? I live in the midst of the middle class haven. It's populated with head teachers, professionals etc. in beautiful sandstone houses. I highly recommend it - great primary schools too. Southside ruled!

Dieu · 18/01/2017 01:12

Absolutely, Fluffy.

Milngavie (pronounced 'Mull-guy') is also another highly desirable area OP, but again, a bit further out.

LauraPalmersBodybag · 18/01/2017 01:26

We rented in the west end for a year but bought in Southside. Personally, I prefer it - all of the NCT stuff seems to happen south and there's Merry Go Round in Strathbungo which has tons of events/classes happening there. We also found the way end waaay too studenty and expensive.

Shawlands and Newlands have some amazing houses. Strathbungo is full of great shops and cafes as well.

All private, but Pied Piper nursery on Hector road is great, as is Poppins on Queens Drive, also have some friends with children at Sinclair nursery and they're very happy with it.

We loved from London 2 years ago and I love it here.

Good luck!

Beebeeeight · 18/01/2017 01:33

I know Londoners who moved to Victoria Park and were very pleased with what they got for their money. (Jordanhill catchment)
I've also heard the nursery in the grounds of Glasgow high school is very good.

As to nurseries are you looking for a 3hr a day place or a 8-6 private day nursery?

If your 3yo turns 4 before march they will enroll in school this year to start 2018 so you need to think about catchments now.

Scottish kids almost always go to their catchment school.

Find the school then look at homes in that area.

Netherlee is very highly rated.

But there are lots of good primary schools.

raspberryblush23 · 18/01/2017 01:40

Nothing wrong with staying in Govan/Maryhill or Kings Park. I live in one of those areas, having previously stayed in more 'affluent' areas and love it- live in ex council housing and local primary is excellent. Obviously don't know your budget OP but I'd pick Shawlands or Battlefield.

raviolidreaming · 18/01/2017 07:09

since when has kings park been a no go area? This confused me too!

Ifailed · 18/01/2017 07:17

If you don't know the area, I strongly advise you rent for a while and then decide where to buy. It'll give you plenty of chances to explore all the options and make a decision that's better informed for you and your family.

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 18/01/2017 07:24

We moved into Polockshields. It is a lovely area. The tube is failry close and takes you everywhere.

But if you have an English accent, expect racist abuse. It won't always be overt, The simole way the shop assistant chats to someone with a scots accent then clams up when she hears your English accent, the constant joke(??) we all hate the English. The snide remarks about how every Englishman spends their time thinking ways to put one on poor wee scootlund. We got it all.

LunaLoveg00d · 18/01/2017 07:45

I think you have to remember that compared with London, Glasgow is tiny. We live near Bearsden which has been described as "quite far out" but a direct train from here into the city centre takes 20 or 25 minutes. That's Zone 1 by London standards practically. Plus the schools are suprerb and 25 minutes the other way and you're on the shores of Loch Lomond.

West End is nice but a more urban feel than other areas, parts of south side are OK and Giffnock/Newton Mearns has a very similar feel to Bearsden/Milngavie. OP has given no idea of what her budget is, where work is located, whether she wants to rent or buy....too many variables. If she or her DH is working in Kilmarnock or Ayr, south side a better choice. If it's a city centre job, more flexibility in location.

As for the poster who recommended Maryhill - just no. My children play "let's try to spot someone in their pyjamas" every time we drive down Maryhill Road. It's extremely rough.

LunaLoveg00d · 18/01/2017 07:53

I would also dispute that you must "expect racist abuse" with an English accent. My DH is English, we've lived here over 10 years and he's never experienced any of that. The area where we live has lots of people from all over the world, lots of English people as well as everyone else.
