AIBU to wonder why frozen oven fries always end up soggy

Despite following the cooking instructions? Has anyone got any good tips to ensure crispy fries?

McCain Gorgeous Fries. Crispy!

Make sure your oven is thoroughly preheated. Don't crowd your chips on the tray because the heat won't circulate freely. Shake tray periodically through cooking time. I recommend Aunt Bessie's chips.

They need spreading out a good bit, well, the big chunky type ones. We've recently had the quick cook McCain fries, they're nice, they don't need so much spreading out.

Do them in the top of the oven, nice and hot, for a couple more minutes than suggested.

Oh I was going to suggest McCain too. Normally I'm a store brand lover. But no oven chips are nice apart from McCain.

Best chips I've cooked are tesco own home fries...really crispy ...couldn't get to tesco other day so bought iceland triple cooked chips ,even better !!! None of them ever take 20 mins though...more like 45mins ,worth it though

Yep agreed main ones. Crispy fries. But then I don't like 'fat' chips anyway.

I always find you need to cook them for a few minutes longer than the packet says. As advised pre heat oven, don't over crowd tray and give them a good shake half way through.

Cook then for at least 10 minutes longer than it says on the packet and whack the oven up to full blast for the last 5 minutes.

They don't. Make sure your oven is hot enough and your chips are straight out the freezer.

My husband, despite being a decent cook, refuses to go anywhere near them because he turns them to mush.

I can't do roast potatoes/vegetables of any sort though because I have a similar curse.

We like the M&S skinny fries - they turn out very crispy, but you do need to cook them longer than you think.

Preheat properly, spread them out and add a few minutes to the cooking time.

A chip tray with the holes in helps as opposed to a normal baking tray.

Dh drizzles a little oil on them, shakes them throughout the cooking time, and leaves them in the oven for about 40 minutes. He likes crispy chips, and I haven't got the knack.

Coking time? Don't do drugs and cook. Bad combination.

i find fries have a universal cooking time 220 in a pre heated oven 15mins turn over 15mins done if i paid attention to the instructions soggy fries .weird

Oven hotter than it says, cook for longer than it says, agree with PP who says whack oven up to max for last few minutes.

Smother with cheese to make up for the loss of fat in the oven chips and enjoy :)

It what I use as the heat circulates and crisps them up.

Easy to wash after as well.

Oven chips are gf and my coeliac son likes them but they can be a pain to cook. Off to check out your link.

not too many on the tray, rather 2 trays than one full one.
and cook them longer than as per instruction.
