about expensive wadrobe

So we've got some lovely bedroom furniture (Bedside tables, dressing table, chest of drawers and free standing mirror) from Barker and Stonehouse which we've had about 6 years. We got it in the sale but still wasn't cheap. I love it though and will last forever as its all really sturdy. However were really lacking storage for clothes and I've seen they've got a wadrobe which would match exactly but it's £940. I know it's alot of money but it goes exactly with the rest of the furniture. What would you do? Am I being unreasonable to think this would be ideal? They do a 0% interest deal over 10 months that would be fine but husband isn't interested and just keep saying 'It's a thousand pound!'. I'm aware of that but the only other solution is to get a cheaper one that doesn't match so well for the sake of saving £500. I'm trying to think long term but agree it is a lot of money. We do have a fitted wadrobe but due to the boiler being in there it doesn't fit a lot of clothes in.

I prefer the second wardrobe. It looks a bit bigger too. I was going to say, take a look on eBay and gumtree. There is some nice stuff on there, very cheap compared to full-price or even sale-price nondescript stuff from the high street. Auctions are even better if you have transport. But I know some people find the idea of secondhand icky.

Icantstopeatinglol · 15/01/2017 15:24

Thanks, I'll check out the folding thing but to be honest that looks like how I have my shelves anyway so not sure it will make much difference. I'll take a look though Smile
Secondhand doesn't bother me as long as it's in good condition, I just don't want it to not match. I wouldn't mind if we had different types of furniture but to have everything one particular style and one different might look odd but I do like the second wardrobe so I'll wait for a photo of the inside and go from there.
Thank you everyone! Feel a bit calmer now! I just don't like being dismissed. Think my husband thinks if he ignores me I'll forget it and then he says I go in a huff when I don't get my own way but what I don't like is just being ignored. But when he wants something it's not a problem. I just want organisation! Really depresses me when the house is upside down.

I wouldn't want it. It's Composite. "Wooden fibreboard (then finished in) layers of white acrylic paint, sanded and aged by hand then varnished".

What is the second hand one made from?

Hohumming · 15/01/2017 15:29

How did you pay for your existing bedroom furniture. If you have your heart set on it, I don't think you will be happy with a substitute. I think you should save and pay for it outright though.

You said the sofa has holes? I'm taking it they are not obvious as otherwise I would prioritise a new sofa. Try decluttering and using the KM method in the meantime.

I tend to agree with your DH in principle though. I sometimes wonder when do we say 'enough'. We have such a buying culture, there is always the next thing and then the next to buy. We put so much extra pressure on ourselves. Might that additional £100 pounds a month enable you to go out for a nice meal once a month instead? Pay off an existing debt faster?

I'm just rambling and trying to change my own mindset as I'm a spender and go through periods of genuine puzzlement as to why I keep doing it.

Icantstopeatinglol · 15/01/2017 15:31

Hi Adish it doesn't say what the secondhand one is made of but does say only two years old so assume similar wood?

OP posts:
Icantstopeatinglol · 15/01/2017 15:33

The holes are fairly obvious on the settee but husband doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry to buy a new one. He's just bought a new tv for £500, though we needed that too. We need quite a few things to be honest so will look into the second one and hope it's ok!

If it's interest free and u can afford the weekly payments I don't see the problem. Wait a week or two though to be sure ur not making an impulse buy this is what I always do with more expensive items to make sure I still feel the same way about it after I've gone through that initial 'oh, I love that!' Moment. Or buy a couple of clothes rails in the meantime. Who cares anyway, I suspect no one but u and hubby go in the bedroom?

Hohumming · 15/01/2017 15:35

Ps I prefer the second wardrobe!

Icantstopeatinglol · 15/01/2017 15:36

Sorry hohumming I didn't answer your prev question! We paid for the original furniture outright.

I do the KonMari folding (hence all the drawers in my wardrobe), it works really well as everything stands up on its end rather than being stacked so you don't lose anything at the back or at the bottom of a pile, and it's very compact. The only clothes I hang are dresses, skirts and jackets. Everything else is folded, from socks up!

charlestonchaplin · 15/01/2017 15:37

Um, I didn't mean your coveted wardrobe is boring! It might have come across that way. Just that you can get a large, solid wood wardrobe for less than the cost of something not very big or sturdy at even Argos, let alone other high street or furniture suppliers.

Earlgreywithmilk · 15/01/2017 15:37

hohumming - agree with this poster too, if I really love something I'd rather save and buy it than get a substitute. I paid over £1000 for our corner sofa - there were very similar things available for less but just not quite right, that was 2 years ago and I still love it and don't regret buying it.

Celaena · 15/01/2017 15:37

the one you posted isnt wood

www.barkerandstonehouse.co.uk/specsheets/Romance.pdf

Wooden fibreboard
Finish: Layers of white acrylic paint, sanded and aged by hand then varnished

Earlgreywithmilk · 15/01/2017 15:43

I agree the wardrobe seems overpriced u could buy something very similar online for half the price. It depends how pedantic u are about everything matching. it wouldn't bother me personally but I don't really like the matchy matchy look (those matching bedroom furniture sets make me shudder a bit actually - I know that sounds snotty) I think having slightly different things that complement one another' give a more authentic look

diddl · 15/01/2017 15:44

Can't believe that for almost £1000 it isn't even wood!

MrDacresEUSubsidy · 15/01/2017 15:49

I like the B&S one but absolutely no way would I pay a grand for a composite wardrobe. Am about to do a run of two extra height double wardrobes, complete with double drawers, full and half height hanging space, sliding doors, storage trays trouser hangers etc., from IKEA for £600. I get that the style is totally different but the base materials aren't - and it's a LOT of money to pay for some additional styling and less space...

However I understand wanting to match in with your existing furniture. If the 2nd hand one works then go for that. If it doesn't and you are reasonably capable with a pot of paint then have a look round the charity shops. The BHF in particular has dedicated furniture stores - all you need to do is find the right shape of wardrobe and then colour match (B&Q can mix paint up to match). It will be a heck of a lot cheaper. Also worth looking if you are on the hunt for new sofas; I stopped buying brand new after noticing that the charity shop had loads in which were in really good condition. My 2 and 3 seaters cost £150 including delivery - so it's a great way to refresh and replace without spending £££.

Whenisright · 15/01/2017 15:51

Seriously that is ridiculous for fibreboard, as someone who's whole career is focused within this industry I can hand on heart promise you that 175 would be TOP price for that. Please don't be ripped off.

JaneAustinAllegro · 15/01/2017 15:56

I bought a similar style wardrobe from a furniture shop on eBay - it has a mirrored door so makes a small room look bigger. It was delivered and total cost was around £300 so I think your matching one is madly overpriced. Look around more and find something that matches better but which is far cheaper

Icantstopeatinglol · 15/01/2017 15:58

Thanks everyone, think you've made me see sense. I just didn't think they still did the same style and was over the moon when I saw it (not so much when I saw the price). However I didn't look too much into build of the furniture so don't feel so bothered now. I'm sure the furniture we have is solid wood though so maybe it won't go as well as I thought anyway.

Viewofhedges · 15/01/2017 15:59

second hand one definitely. you can always get handles that match the rest of your set?

Icantstopeatinglol · 15/01/2017 15:59

Thanks whenisright I'm hoping the girl comes back to me soon about the secondhand one.
You guys are the fountain of all knowledge! Thank you!

I'm always a fan of second hand/ pre loved stuff. But this place is amazing, you can probably get wardrobe and sofa for price of original wardrobe you posted about and they do do B&S stock...

Secondhand one already sold! Sad

OP posts:
Celaena · 15/01/2017 17:13

you'll find another one x

ADishBestEatenCold · 15/01/2017 17:14

"Secondhand one already sold!"

That's a shame, but keep looking and don't rush into anything. There will be more and, sooner or later, there will be something that fits beautifully at a reasonable secondhand price!
