AIBU to be upset over friends attitude to job news

I fear I am BU but this has thrown me a little.

A couple of days ago I got a new job at an agency for a rather competitive industry after a lengthy hard interview and vetting process. When I told my friends they were all wonderfully supportive as I have been out of work for a couple of months and really wanted this job. One of my friends (I say friend, they are more a friend of a friend whom I have clashed with a little before) asked straight away what the agency was as he wanted a job there too and started to be quite aggressive and argument when I said he was being a bit grabby as I had only just found out that afternoon I got the job. I left it at that and said I would talk him through it another time as we were on a night out and not the place for the discussion.

Next day I found he had applied and he had been offered a similar position in the same work place and then started gloating that "I wasn't as special as I thought I was" and that he "deserved this more" than me as he had wanted it for longer.

So I guess i'm asking AIBU to be a little miffed over his attitude of it all?

I'd love to to hear more about your job & your previous job, because from your few posts here you sound incredibly full of yourself & precious and I'm sure that can't be the case.

DailyFail1 · 12/01/2017 23:02

Is it Google HQ OP/Apple HQ? If so you can usually get a contracting/consultant position there in 24 hours if your application fits.

You're not selling teepee's are you?

atheistmantis · 12/01/2017 23:20

If it's a zero hours contract then maybe it's labouring work which varies according to what business the company gets, I mean a contract for a small bridge might only take a week but if it's to go over a large river it could take weeks and weeks.

FannyUmbongo · 13/01/2017 07:15

Kath that made me lol.

OP, why was your interview process long and lengthy and he walked straight in to an offer. Very odd, isn't it?

bonfireheart · 13/01/2017 13:11

You're the opposite of me OP. I work for a great organisation and if I see a relevant vacancy I will forward it to friends and family to apply.

This is some kind of talent agency isn't it? So you have signed up and will be spending your days masquerading as Princess Jasmine or handing out promotional pens at an exhibition? Your friend has a different set of skills and there is more demand for, and less candidates for, Viking No 2 or Scary Clown positions. Ergo, he has got the job with no difficulty.

To be honest, you sound very "dramatic" and you do need to consider whether you haven't irritated all your friends with the "lengthy hard interview and vetting process" when it is obviously possible to apply and be offered work through the agency in an afternoon.

HardofCleaning · 13/01/2017 13:48

I don't get why he was being grabby in asking for the agency details, since you have the job now surely you could pass on the details for him to apply too?

That said after that he was a massive douche.

KimmySchmidtsFakeXmasSmile · 13/01/2017 13:57

Well I think he was a git. Also difficult position to be in as now it would appear he is your competition in getting assignments from said employer. Which is a shame. Good luck with it. X

How the hell is the op in the wrong.

The guy sounds like a twat. congratulations on the job.

Would you be working with him?

Niskayuna · 13/01/2017 16:07

Why did you have 'a lengthy interview and vetting process' yet the very next day after you told him 'on a night out' he had also been offered work there? Within 12 hours?

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/01/2017 16:11

You both sound arseholey in this instance.
