Partner thinks I should get a taxi to this interview. AIBU to ignore him

have a job interview a 50 minute drive away. I get really nervous for job interviews so usually just take the easy option and just get a taxi instead of messing around with walking and trains or if my partner can take me he does. Normally he asks to take time off as we have very little money with us both being students.

I recently got a job interview for a social worker job and it will be £70 in a taxi! Partner can't take me and I can't drive. The other option is to walk a 10 minute walk to my local train station. And take two 30 minute trains and then from the last train station it's a 5 minute walk to the building my interview is at.

Normally I get a taxi but seeing as there's not much walking involved I thought I could go by train.

My problem is when I walk and I'm nervous I sweat. Even just a little walking increases my body temperature. But I will have a 1 hour train journey to cool down with and it's absolutely freezing at the moment.

I was thinking of straightening and tying my hair back and then putting my make up on on the train. And brushing my hair just before getting to the venue. I have fine straight hair. If I get fully ready before I leave my make up might melt a little.

I have beautiful black heels for the interview but would wear foldable dolly shoes and just pop them on before getting to the venue. There's a bus stop next to it.

Does this seem too much hard work?

Our combined income is £13,000 a year for all bills. We also have a toddler. It just seems such a waste paying so much when I can go by train.

I'm also not quite as nervous for this job interview. It's with one manager and a service user so seems less daunting

I was just going to post to get a taxi there and train back but I see you've already made your decision.
Good luck with the interview.

Best of luck. Remember to Breathe!

Good luck with the interview, OP! I'm sure it will all be fine.

The thing that's been in my mind all the way through reading this is that I can't imagine many men go through this sort of angst in the run up to an interview. How many employers would actively mark a female interviewee down for turning up not wearing makeup or for wearing flat shoes? Very few, I hope, but I sometimes get the impression from MN that some women feel those (like me and my daughter) who never wear high heels or makeup are somehow unprofessional. There is no equivalent expectation for men.

And returning to the OP, she is a qualified social worker. How can it be relevant to her job that she should be wearing high heels and perfect makeup?

Your plans sound sensible to me.

Good luck op Flowers

I don't really see how a ten minute walk in the middle of winter will cause her to be drenched in sweat.

She said she sweats when she's nervous - if that's the case then the temperature or walking speed doesn't make any difference. I would break out in a sweat in sub-zero temperatures while standing still if I was really nervous. It's very annoying, but that's just how it is.

However, I wouldn't consider getting a taxi if it was going to cost £70.

How about taking earlier trains than you need, and then you'll have more time at the other end of the journey to compose yourself a bit? Take it nice and slow and maybe even sit and have a cuppa somewhere if you're super-early and go over any notes you've brought with you.

Most interviewers will fully understand if you look a little 'glowing' when you arrive for an interview. I interview people for jobs now and again and provided someone was dressed appropriately and neatly and looked clean and tidy, I wouldn't care in the slightest if they looked a little hot and bothered through nerves, or a brisk walk, or because it's a blustery day or something.

Best of luck!

BravoPanda · 12/01/2017 16:36

How in god's name is a taxi £70 when it's within the same city?!

Doublegloucester · 12/01/2017 16:47

Tripledry deo spray is on offer at Boots. Works wonders for me OP... Honestly, it makes all the difference when in a stressful situation.

user1484223149 · 12/01/2017 16:51

I'm taking on all the advice. I find if I tie my hair up I sweat a lot less.

For me I mainly sweat once I've been walking in a cold environment and then walk into a hot building. Because walking warms you up.

I seem to swear from the face and head so as my hair is extremely thin it makes it look wet and it dries looking greasy. I put it in a loose bun for interviews so hopefully it states looking nice

A bit of dry shampoo when styling helps prevent it going greasy looking too.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 12/01/2017 16:55

Best not to start swearing profusely as soon as you get in the building. Grin

ShastaBeast · 12/01/2017 17:14

I get the sweating thing, nothing to do with my weight and definitely worse in winter with wrapping up and going into heated buildings etc. Using Mitchum and Triple Dry has helped a lot, I barely have to worry now and have no idea why I stuck with useless Sure deodorant for so long.

Is there a cafe or toilet in the station? Don't let nerves get you too much, interviewers expect you to be nervous. I admitted I found the interview stressful and did ask for a question to be repeated as I lost track - I got the job. Preparing my answers helped and I even read my notes to one question.

Marmalade85 · 12/01/2017 17:45

Get the train and get there early and pop into a coffee shop to make yourself presentable. Bring some dry shampoo with you to freshen your hair.

user1484223149 · 13/01/2017 11:48

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've arrived at my destination looking calm and presentable. No worries about sweating. I used the deodorant that was suggested.

Only downside is I had to take my older looking big bag to fit my spare shoes in. I've draped my coat over the bag to hide it.

I'm just at the nearest train station waiting to walk up now. I'm too early to go in yet. It's cold so keeping me cool.

ao glad I didn't take a taxi

Congratulations on your interview and well done for getting there in good time. I'm sure you look smart and you'll be great! Best of luck!

Purplebluebird · 13/01/2017 11:58

I go by train for these things, even if it's a faff!

drivingmisspotty · 13/01/2017 12:00

Oh you are there now? Good luck! And try not to worry about being nervous. I do quite a bit of interviewing and i always root for the candidates and am forgiving of any nerves. We've all been there! Just concentrate on letting them know how you meet the person spec and I am sure they will be pleased to be able to put lots of ticks on your form.

Good luck!

I absolutely nailed it. The interviewers spent 40 minutes telling me what I would be doing and why the company is a good place to work.

The room was really cold which kept me looking nice and the interviewers were male which helped! Lol.

They're interviewing another person after me so I suppose they could be better than me so
You never know but I can be happy with my performance and I was much more confident than normal as the interviewers were so nice.
