to want to call dd2 Pearl?

DD1 is called Violet and although I'm not yet pregnant we're planning another baby. If it's a girl I'd dearly love to call her Pearl but dh disagrees. However, he likes the name Ruby, which although it is lovely, is very popular, and hypothetical dd2 wouldn't be the only one in her class. Now I think Pearl is going to be the new Ruby. I think it's a very lovely name with Victorian gothic overtones, like Violet. How can I convince him it's not the name of a stripper. And yes I know about 'pearl necklaces' but the name Lola is popular despite the tranny references in the song by the Kinks.

Looking for some back-up from like-minded people out there!

Err, I think there were too many "completelys" in that post...

PeachyClair · 22/02/2007 20:44

I like peral personally

LowFatMilkshake · 22/02/2007 20:44

I love the name Pearl - I was thinkning about it earlier today funnily enough! Although I am not having any more children (two's enough for us - we dont multi-skill very well and like the 1 parent per child ratio in our house ).

My DC2 was a boy, but if he had been a girl I was arguing for Amelia or Aggie - DH was having none of it!

Tell your DH that since you will carry it for 9 months you have final name say. But will happliy consider his opinion on all other child raising matters!

AitchTwoOh · 22/02/2007 20:47

my friend has called her wee girl pearl, it's a lovely name and really suits her. the only downside is that in scotland a lot of people pronounce it peril.

mummymagic · 22/02/2007 20:48

I like Pearl. Goes really beautifully with Violet. And Iolanthe is lovely too. Have taught loads of Ayos (and an Abiola) and didn't know it meant 'joy' - so I have learnt something today!

What about other flower names, to go with Violet?

tassis · 22/02/2007 20:50

I know a Pearl in Aberdeen who pronounces it "Peril" (with the R rolled like a true Scot). Makes me chuckle...

Go for it! It's lovely with Violet.

chocolatekimmy · 22/02/2007 21:09

You could change your nickname to

motherofpearl

if you
a, have another baby
b, its a girl
c, get your own way

It's a nice name (so long as your surname isn't harbour) and unusual which is good

williamsmummy · 25/02/2007 11:13

I prefer the name emerald.
met a little girl with the name, her parents took one look at her beautiful eyes and called her emerald.

AitchTwoOh · 25/02/2007 18:52

blimey, what if her eyes had changed colour?

sunnysideup · 25/02/2007 19:25

I think Emerald is a BEAUTIFUL name. Someone, please call your baby Emerald NOW. i can't I'm not having any more!! Em for short, Emmie.....anyone sold?

funkimummy · 25/02/2007 19:28

zippitippitoes · 25/02/2007 19:31

someoneasked about pearl not long ago it think it is like stanley coming up fast still don't like it though myself

belgo · 25/02/2007 19:32

aitch - my dd's name is the same colour as her eyes, quite by chance.

gingermonkey · 25/02/2007 20:07

I love Pearl. It was one of my choices for DS (if he had been a girl, of course!!!). Ruby is also lovely though, as is Emerald (and I like Olive and Betty and lots of names popular with old ladies!). But my fave name of all is Tabitha (and when I eventually get DD2 that's what she will be called!)

theheadgirl · 25/02/2007 20:18

Pearl is lovely and goes well with her big sister's name, Violet! That's an important consideration, you could hardly have Violet and Britney now could you?? Violet and Pearl however go beautifully together, they are edwardian palour maids

AitchTwoOh · 25/02/2007 21:33

belgo, now why on earth would you call a child Bloodshot? Tsk.

booitsme · 28/04/2017 21:08

I know someone who's daughter is called Pearl. When she first said her baby's name I thought it was odd. Now the beautiful little toddler suits it perfectly and I think it's lovely and different.

CPtart · 28/04/2017 21:24

My friend has just named her baby Pearl. I really don't like it at all.

KC225 · 28/04/2017 21:26

Love the name Pearl. Beautiful name

Mermaidinthesea123 · 28/04/2017 21:28

I love it, it's not weird and I don't know anyone else called Pearl.

HelenaWay · 28/04/2017 21:30

This thread is 10 years old!

I don't like the name Pearl.

Tastesjustlikecherrycola85 · 28/04/2017 21:31

I desperately wanted Pearl for dc2, but Dh went cold on it, luckily I didn't sulk for long as dc was a ds. It's a beautiful name, go for it!

UppityHumpty · 28/04/2017 21:32

Pearl seems to be becoming quite common in my Nigerian/East-African circles. Wouldn't really suggest it if you think Ruby's common, because it prob will be soon.

Other jewel names - Topaz, Amber, Opal, Bijou (french for jewel), Jewel, Emerald, Crystal, Beryl, Sapphire, Jade, Mica

mammmamia · 28/04/2017 21:37

Zombie thread!!
I love pearl though and I know a fabulous one in her 50s. It's gorgeous.

Giddyaunt18 · 28/04/2017 22:02

Pearl is lovely.
