To think Boden shouldn't use "war medals" as a fashion print?

Got their latest catalogue and was a bit shocked to see lots of prints like this one

Hideous dress - not just the print but the shape too.

mpsw · 10/01/2017 08:54

"I quite like it. Is it not the same as wearing a poppy?"

No, of course not!

The poppy campaign is both a fundraiser for the Royal British Legion and the symbol for national remebrance.

This is a clothes manufacturer with no link to either of those things using a totally different set on images on the fabric.

throwingpebbles · 10/01/2017 08:57

I don't get why people are attacking me personally. I asked a question, I don't mind what your opinion is on the clothes, and interested to hear both sides
I live in a village with a lot of military connections, and know the vets here wear their medals with great pride and there are so many stories behind them

Happy to hear people's thoughts on why the dress is fine but there is absolutely no need to attack me personally.

Seems like a case of being offended for the sake of it.

PaddingtonLoverOfMarmalade · 10/01/2017 09:01

I think it's strange.

mpsw · 10/01/2017 09:04

I can't make out the exact medals, and might not recognise them all anyhow. Some certainly look like MBE/OBE/CBE without ribbon.

Any spotters able to work it out?

Are they really all "war" medals?

OP: by 'war' medals did you mean campaign medals?

Somerville · 10/01/2017 09:04

How bizarre.
Who would actually wear that?!

I am trying to imagine my father's (retired armed forces) face if I wore that. I think he would piss himself laughing, probably, and I'd never live it down.

ComputerUserNumptyTwit · 10/01/2017 09:07

I have questionable taste, but even I think that's ugly.

Can't see anything to be offended about though.

LumelaMme · 10/01/2017 09:20

What they're not:
VC
GC
DSO
Any of the campaign stars from World War II
DFC
MM
DSC
CGC
MC
Defence Medal (World War II)
There's one that bears a passing resemblance to the South Africa medal (Boer War) but the image isn't very clear and if the ribbon lacks the green stripe, it's not that.
OBE
MBE
CBE

Their designer probably made them up, or pinched images from 'The Medals of Ruritania'. If someone can ID I'd be intrigued.

(Hideous dress.)

SemiNormal · 10/01/2017 09:20

I agree that they may not be war medals, I have zero clue about war medals though and wouldn't be able to tell a war medal from a medal of the royal antediluvian order of buffaloes!! I do think though that my initial reaction would be to think of war medals when I saw it. Not my thing but don't see it as something to get worked up about, even if it is war medals.

2014newme · 10/01/2017 09:25

Hideous dress
Op they are not actual war medals depicted
You haven't said why you think they shouldn't design a dress with a medal print? What's your objection

RubyGoat · 10/01/2017 09:31

Ugly dress. 100% plastic fabric. I don't think I'd have it for free, frankly. But different people have different taste - I bet it would look fab on someone half my age & 2 stone lighter than me. (Still plastic though)

PansyGiraffe · 10/01/2017 09:31

I can't get worked up about that dress. I can, though, get worked up about this monstrosity: www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/womens-tops-t-shirts/long-sleeved-tops/wo136-ivo/womens-ivory-multi-medal-embellished-breton

BertrandRussell · 10/01/2017 10:10

On balance, don't do things that might possibly upset people unless your intention is to upset people. There are loads of things to print on fabric that aren't medals. There are loads of toys that aren't Golliwogs. There are loads of swear words that aren't blasphemous.

LumelaMme · 10/01/2017 10:14

Jesus, Pansy, that top.
'Make a statement Breton': make a statement that if you wear this, you have no taste!

Robinkitty · 10/01/2017 10:18

I would feel like I was in fancy dress wearing that.

Somerville · 10/01/2017 10:47

YY to looking like fancy dress.

They're in the style of war medals, and on a navy (called that because of RN uniform of course) background. It definitely looks to my eye like a pastiche of the more formal dress uniform. Blues for Army, Mess for RAF and RN I'm not sure about is, it called Blues as well maybe?

MangosteenSoda · 10/01/2017 10:48

Very offensively ugly. Don't think medals in general are particularly offensive.

Maybe around 15 years ago, a clothing store (Izzue) here in Hong Kong designed an entire season's fashion and decorated their stores with a swastika theme. Not the hindu kind of swastika. I can't imagine the conversations in their marketing department.

SaucyJack · 10/01/2017 10:58

Christ Almighty. I wouldn't even wear that to take the rubbish out.

PuntCuffin · 10/01/2017 11:06

I like the style of the dress Blush, it would suit my figure.
The pattern is hideous and wrong. And I day that as someone who is ex-military. Am pretty sure all my friends who are still serving or were previously would not be impressed.

BestZebbie · 10/01/2017 11:12

The breton looks as if someone was trying to print the dress picture but their printer broke.... :-/

AlwaysNeverOnTime · 10/01/2017 11:14

It's an awful dress but I don't see the problem with the medals.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 10/01/2017 11:16

It's hideous but I really can't see why it's offensive. It's not an Iron Cross with a swastika on it.

Cakingbad · 10/01/2017 11:16

Multi medal embellished Breton? ATOG?

Mind you I thought Felicity Jones' pink bow embellished dress at the Golden Globes was beyond weird and she must have stylists. So what do I know?

throwingpebbles · 10/01/2017 11:23

Of course medals aren't offensive in themselves.

But my initial reaction to seeing the dress was to think that military /ex military might feel, like PuntCuffin :
