To not allow DS to drink tea and coffee age 12

user1474221222 · 09/01/2017 16:02

DS started secondary school in September and recently asked if he could have a cup of coffee as a drink when arriving home.

I've said no but as a child of the 1970's I had my first cup of coffee age 4 after been taught how to make one for my parents Grin

So am I just being unreasonable ?

I've been wanting to write he's 12 , not 5 for a long time through this thread, and then along comes Rogue to completely infantilise a 17 yr old. I mean, seriously ? at 17 ???

nong45 · 10/01/2017 19:31

My DS has been drinking tea since he was a toddler! It's good for you, antioxidants and all that. My kids don't like coffee though, they drink hot chocolate which is full of sugar so I actually think that's worse. I remember it was Mellow Birds that got me into coffee as a teenager! Can you even still buy that!?

Harree · 10/01/2017 22:14

I drink decaf tea all day long. If I have a coffee, that'd be decaf too. I can't tell the difference apart from being able to sleep better at night... I wouldn't be bothered if my children were happy to drink decaf.

HardcoreLadyType · 10/01/2017 22:22

OP?

RoseGoldHippie · 10/01/2017 22:24

If he is drinking coke etc I don't see the issue. Caffeine in most soft drinks tbh.

Been a coffee drunk since 2001 and still happily enjoying my addiction Grin

Aeroflotgirl · 10/01/2017 22:26

rogue your creating what Mumsnetters call a man child, and your ds future partner will not thank you for it! Leave yiur poor ds to make his own drinks, and stop making his 'special tea', he's nearly adult😂😂😂😭

squoosh · 10/01/2017 22:37

I'm tickled by rogue making her almost adult son a mug of weak tea if he's already had a whole mug of coffee that day! 😂

I wonder what would happen if he said 'step aside mother dear, I'm going to make myself a double espresso'.

Aeroflotgirl · 10/01/2017 22:39

squoose rogue might have an attack of the vapours😂😂😂😂

NotSoEagerBeaver · 10/01/2017 22:46

I used to give my boys milky tea in their bottles from about 18mths with a biscuit!

squoosh · 10/01/2017 22:50

I'm surprised you didn't go the whole hog and hand them a crack pipe while you were at it Beaver

😉

Blu · 10/01/2017 22:51

I think tea and coffee is a good drink for a 12 year old when they come in from school in the winter

Much better than the almost fetishised sugary hot chocolate. (Women get spa days, kids get hit chocolate ...).

I think it is good to allow them to enjoy a range of drinks that are neither sugary nor alcoholic.

And let him develop a taste for decent coffee. De-caff is foul.

NotSoEagerBeaver · 10/01/2017 23:02

I know right squoosh , but I think foisting that rank decaf stuff on them worse ;)

HaloOnFire · 10/01/2017 23:13

Ds used to have a sippy cup of tea with his toast when he was about one. He loved it. He's 23 now and I rarely see him drink tea or coffee, thinking about it dd is the same and she would have tea from being a toddler. Both prefer water, juice or a bit chocolate.

mrschiefy · 10/01/2017 23:30

I wouldn't go with Decaf ... loads of chemicals in it to get the caffeine out ... just go with weak real coffee or milky coffee

EstelleRoberts · 10/01/2017 23:43

The post about policing a 17 year old's caffeine intake is a wind-up, right?

On another note, tea is full of fluoride, so good for your teeth.

38cody · 11/01/2017 01:06

yes yabu

PickledCauliflower · 11/01/2017 01:13

I started drinking coffee around ten years old and loved it. I only have around one a day, so never been a mad coffee fiend. My grown up kids all hate coffee - they were all tea drinkers though from around 8 or 9 years old.
I think hot drinks containing caffeine are fine in moderation. I wouldn't letting kids have any in the evening though - as you can imagine the consequences at bed time.

PickledCauliflower · 11/01/2017 01:14

I used to have cold milky tea in a bottle as a toddler :)
It may be a northern delight..

PickledCauliflower · 11/01/2017 01:17

Decaffinated coffee is horrible - it should be banned as it's a crime to the tastebuds.

EstelleRoberts · 11/01/2017 01:45

Pickled I had tea in my sippy cup from toddlerhood onwards. I think it was started by my grandmother, who was born within the sound of Bow Bells, so not just a northern thing. Possibly a generational thing? I know my mum was pissed off about it, though that was because of the two sugars(!) in it, rather than the caffeine.

Gosh, some people on here would have a coronary over that, wouldn't they?!

smurfit · 11/01/2017 03:18

I would think the caffeine and time of day would be a bigger problem than the drink itself but it depends on your current habits.

Personally, if I have black tea or coffee after about 2pm I struggle to sleep properly. I have the same issues if I have a glass or 2 of coke in the evening so mostly, I avoid all of these except in the morning or with lunch.

Some people can drink coffee as a nightcap. I am envious of this because I love the stuff!! Growing up we only had milo as a hot drink. I remember trying tea but not liking it. I didn't start coffee till I was about 20 and picked up drinking tea a few years after.

maplepixie · 11/01/2017 08:32

People don't half worry these days. Personally don't see the worry in 1 weak milky coffee after school!

FurryLittleTwerp · 11/01/2017 08:43

barley cup and dandelion coffee are nice

sorry Rogue but Barley Cup has to be one of the most disgusting things I've ever drunk - a vegetarian hippyish friend at university drank gallons of it - bleeurgh!

She also ate Carob bars which I found to be somewhere between awful & weird.

I can't comment on Dandelion Coffee but expect I'd hate it

Grin
HairsprayBabe · 11/01/2017 09:01

Furry I have to agree with that, barley cup tastes like it came out of the compost heap.
